  • 93-year-old Woman Shot: Officer Had Previous Charges

93-year-old Pearlie Golden was fatally shot Tuesday by Hearne, TX policeman, Officer Steven Stem. That investigation remains open. And complicated.

Early reports indicate that Pearlie, known by her friends and neighbors as Ms. Sully, was brandishing a gun and refused to put it down.

What she was doing with it could be anyone’s guess, but there are reports out there that a nephew had called 911 earlier in the day because he tried to take her car keys away from her after the Texas Department of Public Safety refused to renew Pearlie’s driver’s license.

Stem was responding to a 911 call about a woman with a gun when he shot and killed Pearlie Golden.

“What we believe is that she was instructed to drop the weapon, that is my understanding.” said City attorney Bryan Russ Jr.

Officer Stem is, unfortunately, not new to this kind of situation. In December 2012, Stem fatally shot Waymon Webster’s cousin, Tederalle Satchell. Stem was eventually cleared by the grand jury, but the resentment is still there.

“What are they going to do, let him go, so he can smile and hold another pistol? You know what I mean? It’s not right.” said Webster.

Andrew Washington lived nearby and was working in his backyard when he heard five shots ring through the neighborhood. “I didn’t think much of it, because I was thinking it was on the other street,” said Washington. After that he heard someone shout “Don’t shoot her no more!”

Perhaps the grand jury will look a little closer at a second case, but that doesn’t bring Ms. Sully back to life and the community is now doing its best to mourn the loss of a beloved “mother” figure. Neighbors and those who loved her are shocked at her death.

Neighbors recalled how every child was Ms. Sully’s child in her eyes. “I mean, you were away from home, but you couldn’t do no wrong,” said Philip Dixon. “Because if she saw you, she was going to tell momma on you, and you were going to get a whoopin’.”

Joyce O’Neil was a friend of Pearlie’s for over fifty years. “It’s hard. You can look in my face and see.” she said. “She’d come over and sit on the patio. We’d sit on the patio all the time. I’m going to miss her.”

As this communtiy heals from tragedy, hopefully some big questions can be answered.

  • 93-Year-Old Woman Gunned Down By Texas Police

More than 100 people are said to have attended a vigil for the 93-year-old woman that was fatally shot outside her home on Tuesday.

Though the incident is being investigated, the entire matter seemed to have stemmed from a 911 phone call about an armed woman.

When police arrived on the scene in Hearne, Texas, they found the irate Pearl Golden. Golden was allegedly angry at her nephew for taking her car keys away because she had failed a driver’s license exam.

Supposedly she had threatened him over the car keys with the weapon.

When the police arrived on the scene, Officer Steve Stem ordered Golden to put down the weapon.

According to a police report, when Golden didn’t comply, the officer shot her at least four times. An exact number has yet to be confirmed.

The elderly woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Stem has since been placed on administrative leave. Meanwhile, members of the community are heartbroken and trying to figure out just how the situation got so far out of hand.

Hearne Mayor Reuben Gomez addressed the crowd at Golden’s vigil, saying that Stem was going to be a topic of discussion during a Saturday city council meeting.

It’s expected the city council will debate what actions to take, if any, against the police officer.

As family, friends, and neighbors gathered to remember the woman that was known affectionately as “Ms. Sully”, they prayed for peace and patience with local authorities.

The investigation is ongoing and members of the Hearne Police Department, Robertson County District Attorney’s Office and Texas Rangers are working together to determine what happened and what actions to take going forward.

As the news gains national attention, many have been skeptical about the need to shoot a 93-year-old woman multiple times, even if she was armed.

  • 93-Year-Old Woman Shot By Texas Police Officer

93-year-old Pearlie Golden was shot and killed by police officer Stephen Stem outside her apartment on Tuesday evening.

The Hearne Police Department received a 911 called earlier in the day from Perlie’s nephew.

Her nephew claimed that the Texas Department of Public Safety refused to renew Pearlie’s driver’s license and when her nephew tried to take her keys, she brought out her own gun and threatened him.

When police arrived at Pearlie’s home, she was waving a gun around in her front yard. Officer Stem asked her to put down her weapon and then fired a shot that wounded the elderly woman.

Pearlie was taken to St Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan where she died from the gunshot wound. Friends, family members and neighbors of Pearlie are devastated by the incident and joined together for a candlelight vigil on Wednesday evening.

“Even if she did have a gun, she is in her 90’s,” said Lawanda Cooke, a friend of Pearlie. “They could have shot in the air to scare her. Maybe she would have dropped it. I don’t see her shooting anyone.

Officer Stem has been placed on paid administrative leave while the Texas Rangers, Hearne Police and the Robertson County District Attorney’s Office investigate the matter.

“While it is too early in the investigation to comment on any of the facts or evidence stated above, I can say that this was a very tragic occurrence,” said District Attorney Coty Siegert. “My prayers go out to the family members of Miss Golden and to the Hearne Community as a whole.”

Officer Stem did not release a statement about the incident.

Those who knew Pearlie described her as a sweet and gentle woman who would never hurt anyone.

Do you think the officer was right to shoot the elderly woman, even if she was armed?
