  • Waiting In Line 3D, The Worst Video Game Ever?

Can’t wait to get your hands on the latest videogame? Do you like shooters like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D? Why not try Waiting in Line 3D, a first-person punching game about a man waiting outside in a queue. There are no enemies in the game, but in the long wait of what’s to be anticipated, the player must stay awake by punching themselves in the face. Punch yourself too often, and you’ll die – too little, and you’ll ultimately fall asleep. The goal is to stay awake.

The game’s style is similar to that of Wolfenstein 3D, Road Rash, and other 90’s games that took heavily pixelated pictures of real world settings and overlaid them to create a virtual reality. You’ll notice that the level design looks similar to early PlayStation games.

The game is made by Rajeev Basu, an interactive artist from London, known for having humor being “a big part of” his “work.”  He’s made such pieces like a brash set of “greeting” cards that were rejected from various card publishing companies, as well as a concept album called EEP EEP EEP EP, which is composed entirely with alarms. Appropriately, Basu copyrights his game circa 1991.

Basu told Wire.co.uk that it’s an “anti-game”, which means it “deliberately undermines the very idea of what a game is meant to be”.

Basu teamed up with Alex Anderson (AKA ManCub), a musician based in Denver Colorado who incorporated his first single, “Friends Listen” in the game. Anderson’s tracks match the echoic distant sound and feel of the 90’s – a kind of new age and experimental music style that sounds like a more upbeat version of Moby’s early work combined with Jesus Jones. Basu said that he and Anderson “shared a similar kind of thinking,” adding that both of them liked “creating things that are a bit ‘off’ and messing with people.”

“The game isn’t interesting, exciting or fun.”

    “I think we succeeded.”

And yet, despite the game being so mundane, there have been “tens of thousands” of internet users playing Waiting in Line 3D with a total of 48 hours. While most players only last for a couple minutes, one player managed to stand in line for 27 minutes.

Go and give it a shot at WaitingInLine3D.com.

  • Black Hawk Down: 20 Years Since Military Disaster

The twentieth anniversary of one of the U.S. military’s greatest botched missions, “Black Hawk Down,” was yesterday. In celebration, the US government recently released the classified footage of the operation. The video above contains some of that footage, and 60 Minutes will probably air even more.

2001’s blockbuster film Black Hawk Down (dir. by Ridley Scott) famously dramatized the events of October 3-4, 1993, when a U.S. military force of combined arms flew into Mogadishu’s Bakara Market to take down militant leaders associated with tribal chief Mohamed Farrah Aidid. Aidid’s militias were hoarding hijacked food at the time and refusing to allow UN peacekeepers to render international aid.

In the battle, referred to by military historians as the Battle of Mogadishu or by Somali locals as ‘The Day of the Rangers,’ Aidid’s civilian militias shot down two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters during the initial assault, and what was meant to be a sixty minute operation became a 12 hour running gun battle throughout Mogadishu between a couple hundred Rangers and several thousand armed civilians. When the team finally managed to exfiltrate the battle zone, 18 U.S. soldiers had been killed.

The AFP reported yesterday that, in honor of the recent anniversary, president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia gave a speech commemorating the dead on both sides of the conflict, and lauding the progress of the country. “Somalis have known nothing but conflict and suffering for two decades, today we have at last emerged from the ashes of war,” he said. “As we celebrate our recovery we also mark with sadness and respect the lives lost on both sides in the madness of that conflict and we say firmly, never again.”

Since Mohamed Aidid usurped Somalia’s previous government in 1991, the UN refused to recognize Somalia as legitimately governed until the administration of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. “Many people around the world know Somalia only through the distorted lens of ‘Black Hawk Down.’ Yet, Somalia has moved on into a new chapter with a recognized government that is healing the wounds of war,” he said of his country’s efforts.

Although the book and film adaptation made little attempt to study the tribal conflict or the civilian militia who participated, indictments charging Osama bin Laden in connection to the events of the Battle of Mogadishu have surfaced. Allegedly, al-Qaeda commanders traveled to Somalia under bin Laden’s orders to train soldiers. Some of those soldiers participated in the violence of October 3-4 and potentially had a hand in its disastrous outcome. Because of allegations regarding the involvement of al-Qaeda, the battle is now being called one of the first in America’s War on Terror.

  • Order the Newly Released ‘Pinterest’ from 1992

We have been covering squirrel-monkey’s videos for a while now. I guess we just have a taste for nostalgia. Either that or we love to feel really old. Their latest video shows us what Pinterest would have looked like in the 90’s. Be thankful for what you have boys and girls.

This one is done in a little different style, featuring a video infomercial from the 90’s. The lowered voice and video judder remind us of what a video copy of the infomercial might look like if it had been replayed today after undergoing years of misuse. Like the LinkedIn video, you have to order a CD-Rom copy of Pinterest in order to view it. Certainly makes it difficult to stay current with site that sees thousands of new additions daily.

These videos are getting a lot of suggestions from the comments section of YouTube about what to do next. They have stated that they are going to continue making them, so expect to be maybe see Tumbler, Reddit, or StumbleUpon in the future. They have already gone through all the major social media networks, see them all below.

  • 90’s Nickelodeon Returning, Kenan Does a Promo

    Okay, I totally missed this.

I’m not sure what planet I was living on when Nickelodeon made the best announcement they’ve made in years back in March.

Nickelodeon plans to begin re-airing some of its classics from the 90’s starting in July on one of their channels, TeenNick. TeenNick used to be called “The N” and is aimed primarily at viewers over the age of 13. The channel airs shows like iCarly and Degrassi, meant for a slightly more mature audience. It is available through most cable providers and on DirecTV and Dish.

The old shows will air during a two hour block from midnight to 2 am entitled The 90’s Are All That (get it?).

And everyone anywhere near my age feels a tug on the nostalgia strings.

What shows will Nickelodeon be dusting off? According to RewindNick’s YouTube channel, the new block will include All That, Kenan and Kel, Clarissa Explains It All, Salute Your Shorts, Pete and Pete, Rocket Power, Rugrats, and more.

That “more” better include Legends of the Hidden Temple. Just saying.

Nickelodeon just released a promo for The 90’s Are Al That, starring none other than Kenan Thompson of All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger and now SNL fame. In the promo, Kenan is seated on the SNICK couch and is asked questions about Double Dare. Check it out –

Why did Nickelodeon decide to do this? Apparently they had just heard too much buzz out there about the old shows to ignore it any longer. And the impetus to act came from social media, according to TeenNick.

“At the time, we were completely devoted to that audience ages 9, 10, and 11,” Keith Dawkins, senior VP and general manager of TeenNick, told EW. “It was ground-breaking and for the young viewers, a powerful and pivotal time in their lives. Those kids who are now 22, 23 and 24 want to bring that back.”

It’s true that old school Nickelodeon does hold a special place in the heart of my generation. And social media users definitely keep the memory alive. A quick Twitter search for Nickelodeon will give you plenty of results like this –

Hilarious! RT @britney_haynes that bed is so odd. It reminds me of the nickelodeon show “guts”. Remember the aggro crag at the end? Crag bed 6 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone · powered by @socialditto

disney channel and nickelodeon shows suck nowadays. i miss the 90’s 🙁 RT if you agree 1 hour ago via web · powered by @socialditto

And Facebook has numerous groups demanding the return of 90’s Nickelodeon. “I WANT MY 90’S NICKELODEON BACK,” “Bring back a week of 90’s Nickelodeon,” “I love 90’s Nickelodeon” and “90’s Nickelodeon: Salute Your Shorts” are just a few of the many.

So yeah, the demand is high.

I’ll leave you with these two videos. There’s nothing like feeling a little warm and fuzzy on a Tuesday –
