  • $400M Lottery Winner Claims Prize, Remains Anonymous

The Powerball website indicates that the statistical chances of matching all six of the winning numbers is approximately 1 in 175 million. However, with a stroke of luck, one man beat those staggering odds after playing the lottery for the second time ever. The winner of the whopping $400 million Powerball jackpot stepped forward to claim the prize Monday in South Carolina. He has strategically opted to remain anonymous.

The South Carolina Educational lottery reports that the new mystery millionaire is a native of Columbia, S.C. The winner informed lottery officials that he had made the ticket purchase at the Murphy Express, off I-20 west of Columbia, in Lexington S.C. last Wednesday. He had initially stopped to gas up his vehicle, and purchase hot dog buns at his wife’s request. The store didn’t even have what he needed, but the Powerball jackpot advertisement caught his attention. He purchased $20 worth of lottery tickets instead. The South Carolina lottery also stated that he didn’t check his tickets until the Thursday following the jackpot drawing.

ABC News reports that lottery officials won’t disclose whether the winner opted to structure the $399.4 million for a 30-year payout or if he opted for the estimated $233 million direct disbursement. Murphy’s Express, the store where the winning ticket was purchased, will also get a $50,000 bonus.

The winning numbers were 7, 10, 22, 32, 35 and Powerball number, 19. This jackpot was one for the record books, calculated as the fourth largest prize in lottery history.

  • Powerball Winner Will Be Singing To a Tune Of $400 Million

Lottery ticket sales are booming as players flock to their nearest convenience store to purchase a winning ticket for tonight’s nearly half-billion dollar Powerball. The pot is currently up to $425 million ($244.7 million cash value), as no one came forward with a winning ticket to the last Powerball. The doubled ticket prices (now $2) haven’t been off-putting to the most loyal of players, nor lottery greenies, alike; with such astronomical odds, it is obvious that everyone and their brother has been out to purchase their $2 ticket for the drawing that will take place tonight at 10:59 p.m. E.T.

According to powerball.com, your chances of winning a prize over $1 million are 1 in over 175 million…go figure. Saturday night was the last drawing for the Powerball and had no winners, which is what prompted the stakes for this week’s game to be so large.

Apparently there has been a wane in even the most faithful followers’ tendency to purchase tickets every week; then, when the pot doubles (or more), they run out to get their golden ticket.

Tonight’s game may set a new ‘world record’, as reported earlier by NBC News.

  • Powerball Jackpot $400 Million For Next Drawing

There was no lucky winner on Saturday, when the Powerball numbers were announced. Therefore, the money will roll over to the next drawing, totaling $400 million.

Thanks to the quick-pick option, the most recent Powerball winner, 84-year-old Gloria C. Mackenzie of Zephyrhills, Florida, took home the $590 million jackpot in June. “While in line at Publix another lottery player was kind enough to let me go ahead of them in line to purchase the winning Quick Pick ticket,” she said in a statement at the time, according to Florida lottery officials.

The winning numbers for Saturday’s drawing were 21, 24, 36, 42 and 45; the Powerball was 15. The Powerball is played in 43 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Although the odds of matching all six numbers are 1 in 175.2 million, that doesn’t stop people from trying! A popular tactic amongst the lottery players is to simply rely on the computer-generated numbers. Almost 80 percent of all players let the computer pick their numbers. This may be a good idea because it is reported that the majority of Powerball winners have been people who relied on using the quick-pick.

The next drawing is Wednesday, August 7.
