  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown Interactive Trailer Released

PC gamers got access to the demo for the upcoming XCOM: Enemy Unknown earlier this week through Valve’s Steam platform. Though 2K Games announced at the time that console gamers would get a demo “soon,” the game’s October 9th release date is now less than two weeks away. Though it might be a while before console gamers will get a chance to try out XCOM‘s strategic combat, 2K has today done the next best thing to releasing a console demo.

Today 2K released what it calls an interactive gameplay trailer for the next XCOM title. The trailer, seen below, walks players through an early training mission for the game. At certain points, the video gives viewers a chance to choose how the soldiers (and what types of soliders) will take on the alien threat.

The chose-your-own-gameplay-trailer style is one of the more creative trailers recently seen for a game. It accurately depicts the types of decisions players will no doubt have to make during the game, though they will be controlling the solders directly while playing.

Go ahead and try it out, the different choices lead to drastically different mission outcomes. If you’re looking to keep the soldiers alive, I’ll just offer one piece of advice: cover is your friend.

  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown Demo Out on Steam

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Demo Out on Steam

2K Games announced today that a free demo for XCOM: Enemy Unknown is now available on Steam. PC gamers can now try out the hybrid strategy/tactical game that pits players against an unknown alien threat. The demo includes two levels of the single-player tutorial campaign, covering combat controls and tactics. Players will also get a chance to see the XCOM base, where they will train soldiers and research alien technology.

Video of the demo, like that seen below, has already hit the web, so even if you aren’t a member of the “glorious PC gaming master race” you can still experience what XCOM is all about. 2K has said a demo will be available “soon” for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 gamers.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown will launch on October 9th, and those who pre-order the game will be eligible for free exclusive downloadable content, including soldier customizations and a recruit unit inspired by the original X-COM: UFO Defense.

  • Borderlands 2 Tops Mass Effect 3 Sales in UK

Borderlands 2 has beaten Mass Effect 3 and claimed the title of best-selling debut launch of 2012 for the U.K. According to Chart-track, Gearbox’s and 2k Games’ Borderlands sequel has sold over 4,000 more copies than Bioware’s and EA’s Mass Effect 3 did during its spring release.

Chart-track is a home entertainment market research company that was founded in 1996. It keeps track of music, video, and software retail sales in the UK and Ireland.

The original Borderlands only reached number 7 on the chart-track chart when it was released three years ago. However, the game’s popularity grew through word-of-mouth and some very entertaining downloadable content (DLC). According to Chart-track, Borderlands 2 has outsold the original’s launch sales by 4 times.

Another interesting statistic to come from the charts is that the Xbox 360 version of Borderlands 2 is by far the most popular version of the game. Xbox 360 copies account for 71% of the game’s sales, with the PlayStation 3 (22%) and PC (7%) lagging behind.

So, Borderlands 2 has kicked off the holiday gaming season with a bang. It’s clear from the other two games that round out this week’s top 3 on Chart-track (F1 2012 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2013) that it has been a slow summer for console gaming. With Halo 4, Assassin’s Creed III, and Dishonored on the horizon, Borderlands 2 might have a hard time keeping this honor.

  • Borderlands 2 Launch Trailer Released on the Eve of Launch

The trailers for Borderlands 2 have so far been fantastic. Specifically, the launch date announcement trailer was fun for those who enjoy dubstep, and the later “Wimoweh” trailer calmed things down for those who enjoy the classics.

Today, on the eve of the game’s launch, 2K and Gearbox released the launch trailer for Borderlands 2. While it doesn’t have the flash and creativity of the previous trailers, it does set the stage for what players can expect to find themselves up against.

It appears that the vault hunters will racing Handsome Jack to a special vault that contains an unnamed horror. A horror that could end all life on Pandora. Save the planet, yada, yada…

Anyway, while the story is sure to be a nice touch, there are “bazillions” of guns to collect, starting in less than 24 hours. Check out the last trailer before players get their hands on the title itself:

  • Borderlands 2 Live-Action TV Spot Leaked

Gearbox and 2K Games have been aggressively marketing Borderlands 2 with plenty of trailers, reveals, and even a playable 16-bit browser version of Borderlands. Now, with less than two weeks to go before the September 18 launch of Borderlands 2, the advertising has spread into the mainstream.

Aside from the 10-story ad spotted in New York, TV commercials for the game have also been filling up commercial breaks. This weekend, one of those commercials leaked onto the web, showing how Borderlands 2 might look if it were made into a TV series.

Unfortunately, the video is poor quality, as the uploader simply pointed a camera on his or her TV screen. Still, it’s fun to see a live-action version of Borderlands, even if the real actors make the entire concept (especially the oversized guns) seem rather silly.

  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown Preorders and Gameplay Walkthrough

XCOM: Enemy Unknown may not be the most highly anticipated game launch of the 2012 holiday season, but it is one of the more interesting and original titles coming this fall. The game allows players to take on the role of XCOM commander, managing resources and technology research back at base, while also directly commanding soldiers on the tactical, turn-based sci-fi battlefields.

Today, 2K Games and Firaxis Games announced that XCOM: Enemy Unknown is now available for preorder at all major gaming retailers. It is offering pre-orderers some exclusive DLC called the Elite Soldier Pack, which consists of aesthetic customizations for players’ soldiers and an X-COM: UFO Defense-inspired soldier. The game has a scheduled release date of October 9 in the U.S.

Also, as a bonus, 2K Games today released a gameplay demonstration that was shown in secret at E3 and PAX. The trailer shows off combat in the game and demonstrates some of the tactics and weapons players will be using against the unknown alien threat:

  • Spec Ops: The Line Launch Trailer Features Awkward Staring

It’s officially the summer dark period for gaming. The blockbuster spring titles have already had their launches and publishers are now hoarding their biggest titles for the holiday season later this year. However, for gamers who are done with Diablo III and sill waiting for that new Mass Effect 3 ending, there are still plenty of options – we live in a golden age of gaming where boredom should never be an issue. Gamers can always fall back on the latest multiplayer first person shooters, which always have solid communities. Or, those feeling creative can jump into something more open-ended. Summer also means Steam sales and a chance to see what’s new in the indie market. It can even be a time to get nostalgic and play some classics.

In the midst of this summer lull, though, game releases continue as mediocre versions of the titles gamers are really waiting for are rolled out. This week 2K games is releasing Spec Ops: The Line, a third-person shooter set in Dubai and featuring military combat. It looks to be a cross between Call of Duty and Gears of War, with plenty of chest-high walls. 2K announced at E3 that the title would be receiving multiplayer co-op as a free download sometime after its launch. Still, this will be the first Spec Ops game in a decade, and fans will be looking to see whether the game lives up to its predecessors on the original PlayStation.

2K today released a launch trailer for Spec Ops: The Line which features what I assume is the title character staring off into the camera while surrounded by destruction and war. It’s a concept that could have worked if the character’s face wasn’t firmly chiseled into the bottom of the uncally valley. Also, for a launch trailer to show such little gameplay is worrying, similar to a movie that doesn’t get an advance screening for critics. Take a look below and see for yourself if the beautiful skyscrapers of Dubai are enough to warrant a look at the latest Spec Ops game. Oh, and that June 29 release date at the end of the trailer is for Europe – the game lands in the U.S. on June 26.

  • Civilization V Expansion Announced

    Civilization V Expansion Announced

Civilization V was one of the best games of the year when it was released in 2010. There was some noticeable omissions, however, that kept the game from being the best it could be.

Now it’s 2012 and 2K has announced the first expansion pack for the title – “Gods and Kings.” It is currently slated for a late Spring 2012 release.

The expansion will bring the usual added tech, units, buildings, wonders and playable Civilizations. How many new things are being added? The expansion is adding 27 new units, 13 new buildings, 9 new wonders and 9 new playable civilizations. Some of those include the Netherlands, the Celts (yay!) and the Mayans.

Now onto the big changes – they are adding in religion back in a resource. Players will be able to create their own religion and grow it from simple roots to a world-controlling empire. If that doesn’t excite you, you obviously don’t play Civilization.

One thing that Civ V did mess up was its combat system. It could be easily exploited either way. They are going to fix that with an AI that places more emphasis on balanced army composition. They are also adding melee naval units which is really going to throw a lot of players off, including yours truly.

I never used diplomacy much in my Civ V games as I tend to just launch full out tactical nukes on my enemies while they’re still in the Industrial Revolution. To perhaps sway bloodthirsty Civ players like myself, they are making diplomacy far more interesting now. How are they going to do that? They’re adding back in espionage aka spies. The expansion will allow players to establish embassies in rival civilizations and spy on them to collect intelligence.

They will also be adding new city-states to complement the new religion feature. They are removing the exploit where players could just pay off city-states to be their friend. Players will now have to help out the city-states in their petty squabbles of wanting to kill each other.

Finally, they are adding three new scenarios with one of them already sounding amazing. The three new scenarios are the Fall of Rome, the medieval era and a Victorian sci-fi setting.

We have no idea how much the expansion is going to cost yet, but I’d wager it about $20 to $30 for all of the content listed above. It’s more than worth it since the improvements and additions are already making me want to get back to playing Civ V this weekend.
