    5G Deploying Faster Than 4G

While it may seem 5G is taking a long time to roll out, new data shows deployment is moving along much faster than its predecessors.

According to 5G Americas, citing research by Omdia, 5G adoption has actually far outpaced previous generations of wireless technology. For example, “it took roughly 10 quarters, or until Q1 2012, for 4G LTE to reach 17.9 million connections – roughly where 5G is today. 3G did not reach that mark until December 2010, after 11 Quarters and 2G reached it in December 1995, after 14 quarters.”

As a result, the 17.7 million 5G connections globally in Q4 2019 represent a 329% growth rate over the previous quarter. Even more impressive, that number is five million subscribers ahead of projections.

“We truly had a great year in 2019, as 5G adoption has surpassed most forecasts,” said Chris Pearson, President, 5G Americas. “With the first year of 5G completed, 2020 is shaping up to be focused on the growth of new 5G devices, increasing coverage, increasing network densification, and probably the first 5G Stand Alone deployments.”

The research is good news for the 5G industry and customers alike, especially given the revolutionary speeds the technology promises.

Facebook Slows Staff’s Internet So They Know What 2G Browsing Feels Like

Many of Facebook’s more than 1.5 billion users aren’t browsing Facebook with the same lightning fast (heh) speed as you are. In many countries, like India for example, Facebook users must suffer through 2G speeds.

With that in mind, Facebook is instituting something called “2G Tuesdays”. Many on Facebook’s engineering team visit places in India and Africa to see how Facebook is used in emerging markets. But not everyone can up and go to India. So they improvise.

    From Business Insider:

But because not all employees get to go on international trips, Facebook is instituting “2G Tuesdays.”

When a Facebook employee logs on any Tuesday morning, they’ll see a prompt at the top of their News Feed asking whether they want to try out the slower connection for an hour.

“For that next hour, their experience on Facebook will be very much like the experience that millions of people around the world have on Facebook on a 2G connection,” Engineering director Tom Alison says. “They’re going to see the places that we need to improve our product, but they’re also going to see the places where we have made a lot of progress.”

Speaking of India, Mark Zuckerberg is there now. He recently visited the Taj Mahal and said “it’s incredible what love can motivate us to build.
