  • Duke, Lehigh Drive Top March Madness Social Buzz

The first weekend of the 2012 NCAA tournament lived up to sports fans’ expectations. There were close games, blowouts, and everything in between. We also saw big name favorites live up to the hype and deliver commanding performances.

But of course, what does everybody want to see?

Yes, there were a few notable upsets – the two most shocking happening when a couple of #15 seeds knocked off a couple of powerhouse #2 seeds. It was the first time in history that two #15s were victorious in one tournament. And as you would expect, those two games sent social media sites like Twitter and Facebook on fire with comments – especially when Lehigh defeated the mighty Dukies.

Social TV analytics company Bluefin Labs tracked social media comments across all the games over the weekend (Thursday – Sunday). According to their research, 2.46 million comments were made, making an average of 49,000 comments per game. And the winner, the most buzzed-about game of the 48, was Lehigh and Duke:

As you can see, it wasn’t even that close. By the word cloud provided, you can kind of figure out why that game drew such a huge response: bracket busting. Plus, the game did involve Duke losing, which tends to please about 95% of the country.

The other big upset, Norfolk State topping Missouri was also popular, drawing 158,000 comments. Purdue vs. Kansas probably grabbed the #2 spot because it was just a spectacular game. The games the came in 4th and 5th according to social media buzz, UK vs. Iowa State and Creighton vs. UNC both had dominating performances from the top seeds.

I still feel bad for Duke fans, collars will be popped at half mast all weekend. 2 days ago via TweetDeck ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

  • Google Makes Their March Madness Picks*

Google Makes Their March Madness Picks*

    *Based on search volume.

In an effort to both ride the trending wave of March Madness and to promote Google+, the search engine–never forget your core, folks–has posted their March Madness picks, and as the asterisks demonstrate, their winner, as well as any bracket advancement for any team in the Dance, is based on the amount of search engine queries each team generates.

As you can probably tell from the lead image, Kentucky is Google’s “winner,” but unlike an actual basketball game, no “scores” were revealed, meaning, the amount of queries each advancing team was responsible for was not posted.

Click here to see Google’s entire bracket.

Google+ is also an incredibly-prominent feature on the College Hoops 2012 page, and each team that has a Google+ account has a G+ icon by their name. Naturally, the icon links to the respective team G+ page. Google has also included a feed of March Madness mentions on Google+, and they encouraging the use of the #GoogleHoops hashtag whenever you post about the Tournament on your G+ page.

Another Google+ promotion includes an upcoming schedule of Hangouts related to college basketball, and in a hopeful attempt to add incentive, Google has recruited ESPN analyst Doug Gottlieb to participate. Once the G+ promotion aspect of the page is through, it becomes even more useful, offering visitors a downloadable copy of Zagat’s guide to Winning Spots for College Basketball Fans. There’s also a Google Maps link of all the arenas that will be hosting the NCAA Basketball Tournament, as well as the locations of schools playing the Tournament.

Lastly, there’s a Google Earth virtual tour of the various arenas, of which, Google made a YouTube video:

  • UConn’s Roscoe Smith Doesn’t Understand Buzzer-Beaters

Once was bad enough, but twice… are you kidding me?

Connecticut sophomore, Roscoe Smith, came up witha loose ball near the end of the first half of Thursday’s NCAA tournament game against Iowa State and heaved the ball from half-court in buzzer beater fashion. Sure, this may sound like typical March Madness behavior, you know a place where buzzer-beaters are the norm… but the issue is there were 4 seconds left on the clock. Check out the video for yourself below:

If the name Roscoe Smith sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the SAME GUY who launched an 80-foot desperation shot last season during a Texas game, with 11 seconds still on the clock. Check out the shenanigans for yourself below:

Smith’s heave might have been an omen last year, as the Huskies went on to win the 2011 NCAA Tournament, but alas they wan’t have the same fate this year. The fighting Jim Calhoun’s fell to Iowa State in the first round of the tournament, becoming the first team to do so since 1996 to do so.

What do you think about Roscoe Smith and his infamous “last second” heaves? Tell us your thoughts in the comment field below.

  • Marquette/BYU: Yum Center Floor Failure?

It’s getting a little tight in Louisville, Kentucky as BYU is trying to mount a successful comeback against the Marquette Golden Eagles. While the lead is currently 12, the Cougars have already cut it to a six-point deficit once already. The question is, do they have another run in them, allowing them to close the gap completely?

While the game has been entertaining, the condition of the playing floor is getting just as much attention as the March Madness basketball. Even Verne Lundquist said something about the air time the towel guy is getting.

  • Vandy & Harvard: March Madness Battle Of The Brains

Vandy & Harvard: March Madness Battle Of The Brains

You can call this the battle of the nerds, the battle of the 4.0s (or maybe more accurately the 4.25s), or whatever – but there’s no doubt that today’s Vanderbilt / Harvard game has the chance to be a great one.

Vanderbilt is coming off their victory over top-ranked Kentucky in the SEC Championship game and riding a 10-6 conference record into the Big Dance. Harvard, who went 12-2 in conference play and 26-4 overall, won the Ivy League.

For Harvard, Junior Forward Kyle Casey leads the team in scoring with 11.2 points a game. Senior Forward Keith Wright is pulling in a team-best 8.1 boards a game, while Junior Guard Brandyn Curry is averaging 5.0 assists per game.

Vanderbilt is led by their top scorer John Jenkins, the Junior Guard who’s averaging 19.9 points a game. Their rebounding leader is Lance Goulbourne with 6.9, and their assists leader Brad Tinsley comes in with 4.2 a game.

Here are how the two teams compare (Vandy – Harvard):

    Points per game: 72.9 – 65.4

    FG Pct: 45.9% – 46.7%

    Opponent Avg. PPG: 65.0 – 54.8

    Opponent FG Pct: 41.8% – 40.6 %

    FT Pct: 69.8 – 74.6

    Rebound Margin: 1.2 – 4.5

    Average Steals Per Game: 5.9 – 6.0

Twitter is already chatting about the matchup:

  • UNC Asheville Leads Syracuse At Halftime 34-30

Can this be the day we see a No. 16 seed upset a No. 1 seed? It could be as the UNC Asheville Bulldogs are leading the Syracuse Orange 34-30. It should be noted this is only the sixth time that a No. 16 seed has been leading a No. 1 seed at the half.

At the end of the half there was a little controversy as there was a layup attempt at the end of the shot clock. We’ve included an image of it below so you can see that the ball is still in the Syracuse players hand as the shot clock hit zero.

    (image)

It’ll be interesting to see how the rest of this game plays out, no pun intended. Will UNC Asheville be able to keep their furious pace up? Will Syracuse finally wake up? It is March and anything can happen folks.

What are your thoughts on the game? Let us know in the comment section below.

Below is some Twitter reaction to the surprising halftime score:

  • Wisconsin Downs Montana At The Pit

Wisconsin lead Montana by 10 points at half, and they never looked back. At the first game at the Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico, there was no opening round upset as #4 trounced #13 by a score of 73 – 49.

Wisconsin showed why they’re going to be a tough out in the tourney – their defense. On the season, they held opponents to 52 points per game, the lowest in the country. This afternoon, Montana was only able to put up 49, and only 20 in the second half.

But defense wasn’t the only story. Wisconin shot an impressive 47.9% from the field, hitting ten 3s in the process. Ryan Evans and Jordan Taylor combined for 12 – 18 shooting for 35 points.

The Grizzlies’ season scoring leader Will Cherry couldn’t get things going, shooting a miserable 3 -14 from the floor for 9 points.

One of the major pre-game storylines for this game was Wisconsin senior guard Jordan Taylor. The undisputed team leader came into the year as a pre-season pick for All-American. Although Taylor has played well all year, his number are in fact down from a year ago. Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan addressed that before the game:

“His shooting percentage is down a little bit but not his leadership,” he said. “I think it has been tremendous because of how he has brought along the other guys. When you say something 1,000 times sometimes you hesitate to say it again, but I can’t with Jordan.”

This game showed that Taylor has come to the tournament to play, as he took over the game with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists – one of which sent him sprawling across the floor in an amazing feat of athleticism.

Wisconsin will play either Vanderbilt or Harvard in the next round, which will kick off on Saturday.

  • Syracuse vs. UNC Asheville: Early Twitter Reaction

We’re underway in Pittsburgh as Syracuse and UNC Asheville has tipped off. Early on it seems that the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville aren’t scared by the No. 1 that is beside the Syracuse name, as they’re hitting almost every shot their jacking up.

Could this be the day where we see a No. 16 FINALLY defeat a No. 1 seed? I guess we’ll see… here is some early Twitter reaction to the game though.

  • Marquette Looking Strong Against BYU

    Marquette Looking Strong Against BYU

While the first half still has some time remaining, there’s no denying how strong Marquette looks in their opening round game against the BYU Cougars. Hot shooting from behind the 3-point arc (5-9), and rebounding domination have contributed mightily to Marquette’s lead, but it should be noted, BYU showed plenty of moxie coming back against Iona, and with the 3-point shot, no lead is truly safe.

That being said, if BYU reverts to a zone like they did against Iona, Marquette could very well shoot the Cougars right out of the building.

Of course, as I’m writing this, the Cougars have decided to go an 8-2 run, cutting Marquette’s lead to 13 points. It should be noted, however, that the Golden Eagles look like the stronger team, but that in no way guarantees victory. Twitter users noticed this, too:

  • March Madness: Wisconsin Leads Montana By 10 At Half

It’s halftime at The Pit, and 4th seed Wisconsin leads 13th seed Montana by 10 points, 39 – 29. Wisconsin was in control the entire half, never relinquishing their lead.

It was been a clean half, with only 8 combined turnovers between the two teams.

Wisconsin only allows opponents 52 ppints per game, so Montana is on pace to break that – but not by much. Wisconsin’s defense was strong, and was only really cracked by Montana’s Art Steward and Derek Selvig, who combined to go 8 – 11 from the field.

As far a star watch goes, Montana guard Will Cherry, the 5th leading steals man in nation, had 3 in the first half. He was disappointing on the scoring end, however, going only 1 – 7 for 2 points. On the other side, senior leader Jordan Taylor shot 50% for 10 points and also dished out 4 assists.

Overall, Montana shot 43.3% from the field to Wisconsin’s 51.9%.

Will Montana be deep enough to make a 2nd half run? Will the mile-high altitude have an effect? It is The Pit, remember:

  • Syracuse vs. UNC Asheville: March Madness 2012 Round 2 Game

The Syracuse Orange enter the tournament as a No. 1 seed in the East Region with a record of 31-2. They’ll be taking on No. 16 seed UNC Asheville, who will try an become the first No. 16-seeded team to ever knock off a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Orange were bounced early from the Big East Tournament by Cincinnati and were force to finish watching the tournament from home. To make matters even worse, earlier this week Syracuse shared the devastating news that starting center, Fab Melo, as he was ruled ineligible. It’ll be hard for Syracuse to make up what Melo brought to the team, with his 25.4 minutes, 5.8 rebounds, 2.9 blocks, and 7.8 points per game.

  • Murray State and Colorado State Give Great Screenshots

Murray State is currently pulling away from Colorado State, establishing the game’s first double-digit lead. While the game is far from over, there have been some great screenshots already, and thanks to the capturing ability of 30FPS, they’re available to share. The lead image is of the great Bill Raftery and a play on his great “ONIONS!!!” catchphrase.

The game has yielded some more great stuff, including Donte Poole’s broken nose and Greg Anthony’s incredible shining ear:

Yahoo’s college basketball blog had an interesting write-up on Anthony’s get-up:

Anthony dressed up for the first day of NCAA tournament action in a purple shirt borrowed from The Joker, a multi-colored tie that he should have saved for St. Patrick’s Day and a neon green pocket square that Digger Phelps usually accentuates with a highlighter. The ensemble was the only thing louder than Barkley.
Between the shirt and the blinding bling in his ear, it was difficult to pay attention to what Anthony was saying, which is a shame because he’s the lone voice of college basketball reason on that panel with Sir Charles and Kenny Smith.

If a man’s diamond is keeping you from the content of what he says, then perhaps you’re too easily distracted by shiny things.

  • March Madness 2012: Kansas State Leads Southern Miss 30-27

We’ll we’re at the halfway point in Pittsburgh and the Kansas St. Wildcats lead the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. 30-27. Both teams started off pretty cold, with Southern Miss only shooting 8% for quite sometime. Kansas State is also having their own issues, as they only saw 3 bench points thus far in the game.

The top performers thus far are Neil Watson who has 10 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. Rodney McGruder is currently leading the Wildcats with 18 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal. Below are the official box scores:

  • Murray State and Colorado State Play Tight First Half

It’s a close one in the opening game of the NCAA Tournament’s first full day. Murray State and Colorado State are in close, low-scoring battle, but itt hasn’t failed to capture the attention of Twitter and 30FPS, who brought us the tournament’s first blood. As the lead image indicates, the 24-23 halftime score may not look exciting, but the fact that it’s tournament basketball makes all the difference in the world. Would Aaron Rodgers be tweeting about this match-up if it was going on in December? Doubtful.

NCAA didn’t do Murray State a favor making them any favors as a 6 seed deserved to be a 4…Colorado State is legit!(image) 17 minutes ago via HootSuite ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

  • Kansas State vs. Southern Miss: Early Twitter Reaction

It doesn’t help that Souther Miss has started the game 1-12 from the field, and at the moment they can’t buy a shot. Here is some early Twitter reaction to the game.
