Waitress Returns $1,000 To Wrong Person

Samantha Knight, a waitress at Laishley Crab House in Punta Gorda, Florida, was working her regular shift when she noticed something unusual in one of the chairs, at a nearby table. As she approached the chair, she realized that there was a wad of money sitting there unattended. “I just saw a wad of hundreds. I didn’t count it cause I was in a rush to go catch the guy at the front,” said Knight. She immediately grabbed the money, and ran from the store in hopes of catching the man who had dropped it. She was able to catch up to the man, however the person she thought was the owner of the money actually was not.

Knight later found out that she had given the money to the wrong man. Due to him having a large sum of money on him at the time, he just assumed that the money had fallen out of his pocket. Luckily, the man saw the story on the news and went back to the restaurant several days later to return the money to the rightful owner. “He said, ‘I’m so sorry. It was a misunderstanding.’ He said, ‘I’m from Delaware. The money was in my wallet underneath other stuff. I’m in town buying stuff, so I had that much money,’” Knight said.

The actual owner, of the money, was a resident of Chicago, and had already left to go back home. When he was told that his money had been found, he told Knight that she could keep it as a Christmas gift. When asked about her reaction to the generous gift, Knight replied: “Overwhelmed. I was crying earlier. I called my mom and was like I can’t believe it. I called the guy and I was like are you sure?” Knight is currently pregnant, and says that the money will be a huge help.

  • Pope Francis: Capitalism Is “A New Tyranny”

Pope Francis: Capitalism Is “A New Tyranny”

Pope Francis carefully chose this moment to capitalize on his internet popularity with an even more radical statement: that uninhibited capitalism represents “a new tyranny,” and that global leaders are not doing enough to battle the growing income disparity.

Pope Francis’ Twitter account, @pontifex, is the most talked-about thing on the internet, and Francis remains unafraid to discuss controversial issues in the spotlight. Reuters reports that Pope Francis’ latest apostolic exhortation, an 84-page document, directly attacks “the idolatry of money” and importunes the leaders of the world to make “dignified work, education, and healthcare” available to all citizens.

His Twitter quote and reactions were popular, if not downright viral:

“Just as the commandment ‘Thou shalt not kill’ sets a clear limit in order to safeguard the value of human life, today we also have to say ‘thou shalt not’ to an economy of exclusion and inequality. Such an economy kills,” Francis said in the document.

Francis did not stop there. “How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points?” He questioned. “I prefer a church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.”

Continuing, Francis wrote that “As long as the problems of the poor are not radically resolved by rejecting the absolute autonomy of markets and financial speculation and by attacking the structural causes of inequality, no solution will be found for the world’s problems or, for that matter, to any problems.”

These comments are a radical step forward from the Pope’s previous remarks; he had said in September that “Where there is no work, there is no dignity,” adding that the root of the problem is “an economic system which has at its centre an idol called money.”

  • Social Adoption Report: Facebook “Like” Still King, Google “+1” On The Rise

According to new research, adoption of social plugins by top websites is up all around, but the Google +1 button is seeing the fastest growth.

BrightEdge, an “enterprise SEO platform,” has analyzed month-over-month adoption trends of popular social plugins across the top 10,000 websites in the world.

And according to their data, Facebook it still the king of the plugins. In the top 10,000 sites, 10.8% have adopted the Facebook “Like” button. A much smaller 6.1% have installed the Facebook “Like” box.

But that 6.1% dwarfs the meager 2.1% that have adopted the Twitter Share button and the 1.3% that have adopted the Twitter Instant Follow plugin.

As of July, 4.5% of the top websites have gotten the Google +1 button. Although that pales in comparison to the 10.8% that have the “Like” button, it is the one with the most increased adoption in the last month. +1 adoption has risen 1%, way more than Facebook’s “like” button, which has only increased 0.3%. The Twitter Share button has only increased 0.1%.

It’s possible that the Google +1 button saw more integration due to the buzz surrounding the launch of the Google+ social network. Don’t get the two confused – they are separate entities. It’s also important to note that no specific plugin that was part of BrightEdge’s analysis fell in adoption in the last month.

The study also looked at the adoption of social links, i.e. on-site links to the site’s page on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. They found that out of the top global properties, 51% had no link to their Facebook or Twitter page.

These people are missing a big opportunity, says BrightEdge –

This is clearly a missed opportunity for the brands that own web properties that are not “social aware”. They are missing out on a massive audience engagement driver as the major social networks have garnered quite a following with Facebook alone boasting a mind boggling 700million active users spending over 750 billion minutes per month on the site.

For the top 10,000 sites, the majority who have adopted social links have linked to Facebook and Twitter. These links are up from last month. The only social media outlet to lose website linkages was YouTube.

Has your site adopted the Google +1 button? Are you seeing interaction with it? Let us know in the comments.

  • Adobe Contest Looking For #1 Photoshop Fan

Adobe Contest Looking For #1 Photoshop Fan

#1 Photoshop Fan from Adobe Next Photoshop Evangelist on Vimeo.

Adobe is running an interesting contest right now. They are inviting people to upload a two minute length tutorial video to Vimeo sharing why they think that they should be the next Photoshop evangelist.

From Adobe: “submit a two-minute Photoshop video tutorial demonstrating why you should be the Next Photoshop Evangelist. Your video must use Photoshop CS5, a new Photoshop CS5 feature, and, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Photoshop, incorporate the concept of “20″ somewhere in the final image. Have fun!”

Once you make your video you submit it to their Vimeo group here.

Adobe will then select up to 12 finalists where the general membership of their Facebook Photoshop Community will vote on which finalist video is the best for the Grand Prize.

The Grand Prize winner will receive a copy of Creative Suite 5 Design Standard, a trip to Photoshop World (Spring 2011), the chance to demo their tutorial at the conference, roundtrip coach airfare, lodging and meals. All Finalists will also be showcased on the Photoshop YouTube channel.

So Adobe’s incorporating Vimeo in this one. YouTube. And even Facebook. A nice contest that touches on a lot of the social web.

Personally I think someone could do something pretty creative with the new painting features using the mixer brush that’s new in CS5. By the way, here is my own review on the new CS5 from a few months back.

Submissions must be in by August 24th.

    Good luck!
