  • Minecraft Creator Shows Off First Footage Of 0x10c

Markus “Notch” Persson is celebrated as the creator of Minecraft. Since last year, however, he left the Minecraft team to focus on a new game. It was envisioned as a space travel sim that used real 8-bit computers. We’ve seen a few screenshots, but we never got a look at actual gameplay until now.

Notch started up a new YouTube channel recently to drop some information on the progress he’s making with 0x10c. Those familiar with Minecraft will be instantly at home with the game’s primitive, yet charming, visual style. What it lacks in visuals, however, it makes up for in complexity. The player is on board a realistic space ship, and the game will require the player to treat it as such.

The test footage doesn’t show any of the more complex actions that Notch has mentioned, but it still looks good. The physics, in particular, are looking very nice at the moment. Unfortunately, what we see now may never come to pass. Speaking to the Penny Arcade Report, Notch said that he might start over because the game isn’t exactly fun in its current form.

Either way, I’m sure 0x10c will be brilliant. Minecraft may not be my cup of tea, but I still am constantly in awe of how groundbreaking its design was. I may end up not liking 0x10c, but that shouldn’t make it any less stellar.

  • Notch vs. Pirate Quake 3 Match Delayed

Last week I brought you the fascinating story of how the creator of Minecraft, Markus “Notch” Persson, was challenged to a bout of Quake 3 Arena by a person giving away free copies of Minecraft. The match seemed to be the perfect ending to what could have been ugly. Notch could have threatened the pirate with, or actually taken, legal action. Instead, he politely asked that the pirate stop giving away his work. The site was shut down, but the pirate, obviously a Minecraft fan, used his opportunity to converse with Notch to propose a friendly game of Quake 3.

The match was scheduled for today at 1:00 pm EDT, but has been delayed. Notch made the delay announcement on Twitter:

The quake livestream is not happening today. Other, bigger things are! And now, a bad url: http:/www.eample/com/index.html 35 minutes ago via Twitter for Android ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

The fact that Notch says the match is not happening “today” makes me think the event might still happen, and could be rescheduled. Also, what “bigger things” could be happening that would prevent a quick Quake 3 match? Only time will tell, and Notch is known for sometimes being cryptic on Twitter. Notch announced on Sunday that he would be slowing his internet interaction with fans for a while:

I will be mostly afk for a few days due to some (positive) private stuff going on! <3 Translation for 4chan: omg vacation 1 day ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Despite his joke, Notch insists he is not on vacation. The first inkling that the Quake 3 match might not happen came soon after, when a curious fan wondered how this “vacation” might impact the bout:

Hey @notch Are you still going to do the Quake match this Monday now that you’re on vacation? 16 hours ago via Twitter for Android ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

@Fyllm I don’t think I’ll be able to. (And i’m not actually on vacation) 16 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

The news is disappointing, but hopefully the match will come to fruition in the near future. In the meantime, we can feel free to speculate on what Notch’s short internet break might mean for his projects. Does it mean that the final touches are being put on a playable beta for his new science fiction game, 0x10c? Your wild theories are welcome in the comments section below.

  • Minecraft Creator “Notch” Challenged to Quake 3 by a Pirate

Independent video game developers have a reputation for responding to and being involved in the communities that love their games. Perhaps no single developer embodies this more than Markus “Notch” Persson. Notch, along with others at Swedish developer Mojang, developed the hit indie title Minecraft. As today’s saga demonstrates, when interacting with the fans of your indie game, especially one that encourages users to create much of the game themselves, things get weird.

It started when Notch was made aware of a pirate who had set up a website distributing Minecraft for free. Notch sent the pirate a message requesting that the site be taken down. The pirate not only replied, but challenged Notch to a Quake 3 Arena deathmatch.

I emailed a guy handing out minecraft for free and asked him to take down the site. He challenged me to quake 3. THIS IS HAPPENING! 8 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Only an hour later Notch reported that the pirate had already taken the site down. In this tweet, “q3dm17” refers to a Quake 3 Arena deathmatch in the multiplayer arena called dm17.

What a great guy, he already took down the site. 😀 Also, he’s suggesting q3dm17! :-O 7 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Lest anyone still believe the challenge a joke, Notch then confirmed a date and time for the deathmatch. Notch will battle the pirate on Monday, April 16th at 1:00 pm EDT.

I may have to leave the internet for a few days suddenly for private reasons.. but if I don’t, q3 is happening monday 7 PM GMT+1 (noon CST) 6 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

In a Reddit thread discussing the event, Notch was slightly more specific about the challenge, saying, “We skyped about it and decided to do the match Monday 7PM GMT+1 (which is noon CST). 3v3, either q3dm6 if we want fun, or q3dm17 if we want insane.” It was in that same thread that Notch promised to live-stream the event.

Notch is currently working on a science fiction game titled 0x10c. That game will feature a fully-programmable 16-bit computer for every spaceship in the game. The graphics will be very simplistic, similar to Minecraft.

  • Minecraft Maker Creating New Science Fiction Game

Minecraft creator Markus Persson (a.k.a. ‘Notch’) has announced sparse details on a new game he is working on with Swedish indie-game development house Mojang. Some details of the game were made available as an April fool’s joke, but it turns out the game, but not “Mars Effect” name, is real. The game, called 0x10c, will be science fiction, with spaceships, space battles, and a fully working computer system.

Writing on the game’s new website, Notch outlines the basics of how the game will be released:

The game is still extremely early in development, but like we did with Minecraft, we expect to release it early and let the players help me shape the game as it grows.

The cost of the game is still undecided, but it’s likely there will be a monthly fee for joining the Multiverse as we are going to emulate all computers and physics even when players aren’t logged in. Single player won’t have any recurring fees.

The game will be set in a parallel universe where the space race of the 20th century never ended and it became possible for people to put themselves out using a “deep sleep cell.” A computer glitch causes the sleep to last too long, and players wake up in the year 281,474,976,712,644. The alien world players will inhabit is near its end and is dominated by massive black holes.

Notch states that he wants to use “hard science fiction” for 0x10c, meaning he wants the setting to use science with a plausible theoretical baisis. In fact, he stated he wants experts to call him out and make corrections. He does concede, though, that it will probably be necessary to allow players a way to travel faster than the speed of light.

The game will feature space battles against against AI or other players, random encounters, landing on planets, “lots” of engineering, mining, trading, looting, and…duct tape. Players will be able to play on their own or connect with other players using “the multiverse.” Each ship in the game will be equipped with a generator with a fixed wattage, limiting the number of things the ship can do at once.

Following in the steps of Minecraft’s sandbox gameplay that allowed for such diverse creativity, the computer in the game is emulated, meaning users can program the 16 bit CPU any way they choose. This should make 0x10c a fantastic and eclectic creative space.

Notch also took to Twitter after his announcement, answering some questions the site left hanging:

@notch #0x10c looks awesome, super hyped for it! Question: can we trade the programs we create? How will you stop malicious viruses etc? 6 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

@douglettx yes. And I won’t stop viruses, the players will have to do that themselves. 6 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

@notch You sir, are brilliant. I never realised just how badly I wanted to program the main computer of my own starship. What’re I/O specs? 8 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

@ignifluous I haven’t gotten that far yet. Thinking memory mapped message queue, maybe. 8 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

@notch All previous joke appart, 0x10c sound kind of my dreamed nerd game <3 What do you plan for graphics ? Realistics

@Mayeu Simple graphics. Very simple. 8 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

The logo is rendered ingame by the current prototype engine, by the way. 😀 19 hours ago via web ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto
