Sofia Coppola is apparently in talks to direct a live-action version of the 1837 Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, for Universal and Working Title, THR reported Wednesday.

The “intention is to move quickly,” sources said.

Coppola, director of Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette, would replace Joe Wright, who was initially named to helm the project. Wright instead turned his attention to Pan, the upcoming Peter Pan movie he is directing for Warner Bros.

Caroline Thompson, who wrote Edward Scissorhands and The Corpse Bride, is currently rewriting the script. Previous drafts of the script were penned by Kelly Marcel, the co-writer of Saving Mr. Banks and author of the upcoming Fifty Shades Of Grey, as well as by Shame writer Abi Morgan.

Disney produced an animated film of the story that was released in 1989.

The project is said to be kid-friendly and designed to appeal to a wide range of demographics.

The Virgin Suicides director’s work typically focuses on adult themes, and there is buzz about how she might approach a family film.

Working Title is currently in production with Everest, a drama about the climbing disaster. The project stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, and Emily Watson. The film is scheduled to release in February 2015.

Coppola last directed The Bling Ring, released in 2013.
