Robin Williams, 63, was found dead at his home in Tiburon, California yesterday. Although the coroner and his rep speculated that suicide was the cause, it wasn’t until earlier today, after the autopsy, that the true cause of death was revealed.

According to Lt. Keith Boyd of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, Williams’ death was cause by suicide due to asphyxia. Robin had hung himself with a belt, causing him to suffocate to death. There were also cuts on his wrist and a pocketknife was found near him.

The last time Williams was seen alive was around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday night. His wife, Susan Schneider, went to sleep at approximately 10:30 p.m., however Robin never retreated to bed with her. The next morning, Susan got ready for work and left the house thinking that Robin was still asleep.

After Williams failed to answer the door, his personal assistant became concerned and entered the home. That is when he found Robin in a “slightly superseded in a seated position.” At 11:55 a.m., an emergency call was made, and authorities arrived at the scene and pronounced Robin dead.

Robin’s death has seemed so sudden to all those who knew him, and admired him. However, no one was more shocked than his wife and daughter. “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken,” said Schneider, William’s third wife. “As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

Robin’s daughter, Zelda Williams, took to Twitter to mourn her father. “You — you alone will have the stars as no one else has them … In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night … You — only you — will have stars that can laugh,” Zelda quoted from a passage from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. She then added, “I love you. I miss you. I’ll try to keep looking up. Z.”
