Gwyneth Paltrow is talking “conscious uncoupling” again. The actress, who made the term famous when she announced her split from Coldplay front man Chris Martin, had no idea that when she did so she was coining a brand new–and long-lasting–phrase.

In a recent interview with Fast Company, she insists she had no idea the phrase would run the media gamut–or more importantly, stick.

“When I announced that I was separating on the website, [Goop editorial director Elise Loehnen] titled the piece “Conscious Uncoupling,” and I had no idea,” Gwyneth Paltrow explains.

Now she is an advocate for “conscious uncoupling,” and she has even touted its merits on Howard Stern’s radio show and in numerous articles.

Her divorce from Chris Martin long since final, Gwyneth Paltrow has moved on. So what does her future look like?

“My future self is always afraid when I look back,” Paltrow admits. “I had this the other day where somebody was asking me about [the movie Emma], which I did in England when I was 22. It was really my first starring role, an adaptation of Jane Austin’s Emma. And I remember at the time people saying, ‘Weren’t you intimidated to play this English heroine? You’re this American girl.’ When I think about it [now], I would be petrified.”

Gwyneth Paltrow and “conscious uncoupling” are practically synonymous these days. Sadly not everyone sees it as a positive thing, and the media has at time poked fun of the term.

That likely doesn’t bother the actress and mom of Apple and Moses. She and Chris Martin still spend time together for the sake of their children–even though he is still off and on dating Jennifer Lawrence.

Gwyneth Paltrow chose to put her children first when she divorced. Even though some mock her for it, her “conscious uncoupling” has seemingly worked.
