Earlier this year, we learned that Google was adding an unsubscribe link to the top of marketing emails. Eventually, many of us started seeing the feature in action. In fact, I’ve been seeing it for so long now, I forgot Google never actually announced it.
That’s changed now. The company announced the feature in a Google+ update today:
Email is a handy way to get updates from your favorite brands, social networks, discussion boards and more. But sometimes you end up subscribed to lists that are no longer relevant to you, and combing through an entire message looking for a way to unsubscribe is no fun.
Now when a sender includes an “Unsubscribe” link in a Promotions, Social or Forums message, Gmail will surface it to the top, right next to the sender address. If you’re interested in the message’s content, it won’t get in the way, and if not, it’ll make it easier to keep your inbox clutter-free.
Promotions, Social, and Forum would refer to the tabs from the interface Google pushed out last year. A lot of people switched to the old-style interface as soon as that launched, so you’d be forgiven for forgetting about that.
In case you’re afraid this means more unsubscribes for your email marketing messages, Google says it means people are less likely to mark you as spam, which could actually help you in the long run.
