  • Mobile Gambling Hit $10 Billion Last Year

As more video game publishers focus on the large smartphone and tablet install base, monetization schemes on mobile platforms has begun to evolve grow. Microtransactions are now normal for new mobile game releases, encouraging players to pay small amounts of money constantly to keep the action going.

Of course, casinos and other gambling establishments have been taking small cuts of everything for centuries now and the gambling industry is poised to make an even larger impact in the mobile space. Market research firm Juniper Research this week released a new report showing that the mobile gambling industry took in $10 million in 2013. The firm predicts that global mobile gambling revenues will hit $62 billion by the year 2018.

Though U.S. gambling bans are currently one of the only things holding the industry back from allowing almost everyone to gamble on-the-go, Juniper believes that this situation may change in the coming years. As companies in gambling states such as Nevada and New Jersey set up mobile casinos, other states will be forced to legislate mobile gambling.

Even if mobile gambling is outlawed in much of the U.S., game developers may still be able to monetize casino games through existing microtransaction schemes. Juniper points out that several classic casino games such as slots and Poker (most notably Zynga‘s poker app) are some of the highest-grossing mobile apps on iOS. These free-to-play apps could put pressure on real money gambling apps to provide higher-quality experiences than they otherwise would.

  • Newegg Debuts Amazon Prime-Style ‘Premier’ Club

Online retailer Newegg has just announced a new subscription service that offers expedited shipping, exclusive deals, and more. They’re calling it Newegg Premier and it’ll run you $49.99 a year.

You can sign up for Newegg Premier beta today, and you’ll get a 30-day trial.

With Newegg Premier, you’ll get “early bird notifications” on upcoming sales, exclusive deals, free returns, and waived restocking fees.

And of course, the big benefit is the free expedited shipping. Newegg guarantees that items will arrive in 3 days or fewer – and if you want to make sure it comes in less time than that, they offer subscribers discounts on 1 and 2-day shipping.

Newegg may not have the sheer volume of products of let’s say, an Amazon, but they offer a large variety of goods that range from electronics and computer hardware to health & beauty and sporting goods. Speaking of Amazon, this launch comes on the heels of the news that Amazon is considering raising the price on a year’s subscription to Amazon Prime – possibly by as much as $40.

Newegg was founded back in 2001 by Fred Chang. In the time since, the company has grown to be one of the largest electronics-focused online retailers around. They currently boast 18 million users and over $2.5 billion in annual sales. If you want to sign up for the new Premier service, make sure you have a credit card. Judging by their social media pages, it seems there are plenty of people that are trying to sign up with a debit card to no avail.

  • Google Announces DoubleClick Search Commerce Suite

Google just announced the DoubleClick Search Commerce Suite, which the company describes as offering “a smarter, faster, product-centric layer to search management.”

The suite gives advertisers tools for updating and creating text ads and product listing ad campaigns based on product catalog, real-time data and measurements.

“We designed the DoubleClick Search Commerce Suite with products at the core, letting you efficiently build, manage, and optimize campaigns by seamlessly integrating with your existing product investments,” Google says in a blog post. “As the only platform directly integrated with Google Merchant Center, we make your product inventory visible and accessible within DoubleClick Search — meaning there’s no need to navigate a separate interface, manage a manual upload, or wait for a separate team to deliver product feed data. Instead, anyone on your marketing team can act on live updates, as they happen.”

“For example, inventory-aware campaigns uses this live product information to automatically create and update text ads, keywords, and bids based on real-time changes to your Google Merchant Center feed — inclusive of updates to pricing, availability, product descriptions, and more — with no extra work, and at no extra cost to set up,” Google adds.

Google is also adding dynamic product listing ads creation and product listing ads optimization capabilities. More details on these here.

  • Shoplifting Cop Charged on Two Counts of Retail Theft

Shoplifting Cop Charged on Two Counts of Retail Theft

On Wednesday Jan. 8, a New Jersey cop was caught shoplifting over $200.00 worth of gun accessories at a Cabela’s sporting goods store in Pittsburgh, Penn.

According to the Associated Press, State Trooper William Carvounis, 35, was arrested after paying for a few of the items, but attempting to steal the remaining merchandise in his pockets.

A Tilden officer reported the crime after discovering that the trooper had a concealed pistol magazine and handgun grips in his possession.

According to Chief William McEllroy of Pennsylvania, at the time of questioning Carvounis implied special treatment from the police officers, which was “more or less one cop asking another cop for a break multiple times.”

Cops say that Carvounis was trying to get out of his arrest because he was afraid of losing his job.

However, Carvounis’ lawyer claims that he was not explicitly asking for a break. He has also stated that the original police report didn’t mention anything about the words exchanged between his client and the officer who filed the complaint.

“…My client made purchases that day and denies any allegation of any shoplifting,” said attorney Charles Sciarra, according to the Washington Post. “And quite frankly, we see no connection between what’s occurred in the store in Pennsylvania and his duties for the New Jersey State Police.”

As a member of Gov. Chris Christie’s security group, it’s understandable that the state trooper is afraid of losing his prestigious position. However, McEllroy has made it clear that he is forbidden to grant special treatment to fellow police officers.

Carvounis has waived his right to a preliminary hearing and remained free on bond since Monday.

The state trooper faces five years in prison on charges of a first-degree misdemeanor and a summary offense related to two counts of retail theft. He has since been suspended from work.

  • Amazon Reportedly Has Kindle Checkout System, P2P Payments Offering On The Way

Amazon Reportedly Has Kindle Checkout System, P2P Payments Offering On The Way

Late last year, Amazon acquired some technology and engineers from PoS solutions company Gopago.

This was reportedly a catalyst for what will soon become a new Kindle-based checkout system for physical retailers as well as a PayPal-like P2P payments service.

The Wall Street Journal cites multiple people briefed on the company’s plans who say Amazon will offer brick-and-mortars a Kindle tablet-based checkout system as early as this summer, and that there may be multiple plans with one including the tablets and credit card readers, and another including website development and data analysis services.

TechCrunch is reporting that Amazon also has a P2P payments solution in mind, which would enable people to pay each other without having to use banks or PayPal-like services as middlemen. The report points to an Amazon job ad for a Senior Technical Program Manager to build a P2P payment product.

Amazon has offered payments solutions in some capacity for years, but in recent months has been getting more aggressive in the space. In October, the company launched its “Login And Pay With Amazon” service to ecommerce sites.

Amazon Payments VP Tom Taylor said at the time that Amazon had over 215 million active customer accounts, so that’s a pretty substantial base for any account-connected service to start off with.

  • Pay-TV Subscriptions to Top 1 Billion This Year

Pay-TV Subscriptions to Top 1 Billion This Year

Over the past few years, as the internet’s profile has risen as a mainstream entertainment service, cable and satellite providers have seen subscription numbers dropping. At the same time, purveyors of IPTV services have been seeing an influx of subscribers.

The rise of IPTV has helped the overall pay-TV market grow throughout the past two years, with subscriptions hitting nearly 900 million near the end of 2013. Now, a new report from ABI Research shows that pay-TV subscriptions could hit over 1 billion during the coming year.

The new report estimates that pay-TV subscriptions will rise to 1.1 billion during 2014. This would bring in just over $320 billion in revenue for pay-TV providers. This represents a significant rise from the nearly $250 billion that ABI estimates pay-TV operators took in during 2013.

“Increasing FTTH (fiber to the home) subscriber base and bundled subscriber base of telcos are boosting the IPTV market,” said Jake Saunders, practice director of core forecasting at ABI. “ABI Research forecasts that the IPTV subscriber base will grow to 161 million subscribers in 2019 accounting for 15% of overall pay-TV market.”

While cable subscriptions in the U.S. and other emerging markets are declining, ABI reports that emerging markets are still seeing cable TV growth, especially in Asia and South America. Along with cable and IPTV growth overall, Africa is seeing incredible growth in the pay digital terrestrial television (DTT) market. ABI estimates that DTT subscriptions rose 45% in Africa during the previous year.

  • Streaming Video on the Rise as Premium Channels See Subscriptions Fall

Streaming Video on the Rise as Premium Channels See Subscriptions Fall

Though cable companies are still dragging their feet, it is now clear that streaming video is the future of television. Subscriptions for streaming video services such as Netflix and Hulu are rising fast and hardware manufacturers are preparing to flood consumer markets with internet-connected video devices in the coming years. The WWE, of all organizations, has just paved the way for sports organizations to take their programming directly to consumers through a streaming subscription service.

Market research firm NPD Group today released a new report showing that the percentage of U.S. internet households subscribing to premium TV channels such as HBO and Showtime declined to 32% as of August 2013, down 6% from the 38% of households that subscribed back in March 2012. At the same time streaming video subscriptions (what NPD refers to as subscription video-on-demand services) for those same households rose 4% from March 2012 to hit 27% as of last August.

According to the report, subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services made up a full 71% of all digital-video transactions during 2013. The segment is now the fastest-growing type of digital acquisition according to NPD’s numbers.

“As SVOD services have gained momentum, it’s clear that some consumers are trimming their premium-TV subscriptions,” said Russ Crupnick, SVP of industry analysis at NPD. “As SVOD increasingly strives to become a channel itself, viewers might consider it to be an adequate substitution for other premium channels, or perhaps they are switching to economize on their time and money spent.”

  • You May Soon Be Able To Buy And Sell Products Directly On Twitter

You May Soon Be Able To Buy And Sell Products Directly On Twitter

Soon, businesses may be able to sell products directly on Twitter as the company is reportedly in the final stages of making a deal with payments startup Stripe.

This according to Re/Code, citing people familiar with the deal, which is not yet complete.

Neither company is commenting, but this would be a move that we’ve seen coming from Twitter for months, if not years.

All the way back in 2011, CEO Dick Costolo spoke about commerce opportunities for Twitter. He talked about how the San Diego Chargers had used Twitter to quickly sell 1,000 tickets to a game that would have otherwise been blacked out.

“There’s a commerce opportunity there for us to take advantage of if we want,” Costolo said. “How can we remove friction from the process?”

That was over two years before Twitter went public. Now, it needs revenue streams more than ever, and it looks like they’re ready to make a move in that direction.

More recently, this past August, Twitter announced that it had hired former Ticketmaster boss Nathan Hubbard as its new Head of Commerce (Twitter really has a thing for tickets apparently). Bloomberg quoted him as saying:

“We’re going to go to people who have stuff to sell and help them use Twitter to sell it more effectively.”

“One of the hallmarks of Twitter’s entire approach has been partnering. We’re going to take the same approach with owners of physical and digital goods.”

Earlier in the year, Twitter partnered with AmEx to let cardholders use Twitter to buy things using hashtags.

  • Microsoft Envisions The Future Of Retail, Thinks Everybody Will Have Windows Devices

Microsoft Envisions The Future Of Retail, Thinks Everybody Will Have Windows Devices

What’s been the most innovative technology in retail over the past few years? If you immediately thought of Square, you win. The POS hardware/software combo has made it easier than ever for small businesses to accept and process credit card payments at any time and anywhere. Now Microsoft wants a piece of the pie.

In a new video from Microsoft, the company envisions a world where everybody – retailers and consumers – own Windows devices. In this fantasy world, retail associates can use NFC to sync a consumer’s Windows Phone with their Windows tablet to find which products they most desire. Windows devices are also seen being used as POS stands so customers can check out in more places.

While this Windows device fantasy land is obviously something Microsoft wants to happen, it’s not reality. The above video does, however, convey the very real transformation of retail thanks to technology. A number of mobile devices, ranging from Android and iOS to even Windows Phone, are transforming how retailers sell and how consumers buy.

It’s obvious that Microsoft is ahead of the curve when it comes to transforming retail, but will it really just rely on trying to sell Windows devices to do so? If anything, Microsoft should work on some software solutions for all devices to take on Square and others. For all we know, that’s probably in the works, but it certainly isn’t going to stop trying to sell Windows devices to businesses anytime soon.

  • Groupon Buys Fashion Retailer Ideeli For $43 Million

Groupon Buys Fashion Retailer Ideeli For $43 Million

Groupon announced on Monday that it has acquired fashion retailer ideeli for $43 million in cash. The purchase, Groupon says, will extend its presence in fashion and apparel.

“These types of offers have been very popular with Groupon customers, and ideeli brings a significant presence within the industry as well as great relationships with top brands,” a Groupon spokesperson tells WebProNews. “Some research estimates that the off-price fashion market is around $40 billion today, including both online and offline retailers. By adding ideeli to our family, we’re better suited to grab a bigger slice of this market as we continue to position Groupon as the place you start when you want to do or buy just about anything, anytime, anywhere.”

“Groupon’s brand, reach and vision as an ecommerce destination make it a tremendous place to continue to grow our company,” said ideeli CEO Stefan Pepe. “We look forward to bringing the great deals we offer to Groupon customers.”

Ideeli will maintain its New York headquarters, and its site will continue to operate independently of Groupon. In fact, they’re giving customers 20% off of their next purchase through Tuesday to celebrate the news.

Groupon’s getting off to a fast start with the acquisitions in 2014. Earlier this month, the company completed its previously announced acquisition of Ticket Monster from rival LivingSocial (whose CEO just announced his resignation last week).

  • 2013 Was A Huge Year For Amazon Marketplace

2013 Was A Huge Year For Amazon Marketplace

Amazon announced on Thursday that 2013 was a record-setting year for Amazon Marketplace sellers, and that it now has over 2 million of them. Throughout the year, sellers sold over a billion units worldwide, worth tens of billions of dollars, the company says.

Marketplace sellers had a particularly good holiday season with over 13 million units ordered worldwide on Cyber Monday, up 50% year over year.

If you’ll recall, Amazon gave Marketplace sellers access to high-traffic holiday deal pages, which no doubt contributed significantly to the big year.

“Amazon gave us an opportunity to offer an incredible holiday deal on Cyber Monday and we hit it out of the park,” said Eli Silver Sakkal, president of Amazing Deals Online. “We experienced an unprecedented 5,000 percent sales growth spike on an item we listed with an attractive holiday deal price. I know it sounds unbelievable, but it’s true! We sold more than $1,000,000 in product in a single day. Being a Marketplace Seller on Amazon has allowed us to benefit from the technical infrastructure they’ve built up over the years while reaching millions of loyal customers worldwide for a modest cost to us. We have enjoyed an 80 percent increase in units sold on Amazon this holiday season without having to invest a penny in our own infrastructure. Amazon by far has been our most successful sales channel this holiday selling season.”

Amazon says Marketplace sellers have continued “rapid adoption” of Fulfillment by Amazon with the number of active sellers using it growing over 65% year over year.

Peter Faricy, VP for Amazon Marketplace, said, “It has been an incredible year for Marketplace Sellers including popular brands and businesses of all sizes selling on Amazon. Our customers have told us they appreciate the hundreds of millions of products listed by Marketplace Sellers that range from all types of apparel to a vast selection of electronics items.”

“Our goal every day is to make selling on Amazon as easy as possible,” he added. “Fulfillment by Amazon is a wonderful service as it gives all Marketplace Sellers the option of warehousing their inventory in our fulfillment center network. It has been a game changer for sellers because their items become eligible for Prime benefits, which drives their sales and benefits consumers with additional Prime selection.”

Fulfillment By Amazon shipped more units in the Q4 than the total number of units combined in all of 2009 and 2010.

The number of businesses using Amazon Payments also grew by 50% year over year on Cyber Monday.

  • ‘Assassin’s Creed IV’ Retailer Exclusives Are Coming as DLC

‘Assassin’s Creed IV’ Retailer Exclusives Are Coming as DLC

Many gamers consider retailer-exclusive pre-order bonuses to be a blight on the gaming landscape. The system forces those most loyal to game franchises to pick which of several digital goodies they want or else buy three or more copies of the game to get it all.

Luckily for gamers, retailer-exclusive content has, so far, remained largely pointless for most games. Weapon and character skins are the most common forms of retailer-exclusive content, though some publishers will go so far as to offer an exclusive level or mission.

Normally retailer-exclusive content stops being exclusive with game-of-the-year or anthology editions of games, which often include every piece of content ever released for a game. Today Ubisoft announced that it is instead selling all of the retailer-exclusive content for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag as a DLC bundle.

Not three months on from the release of Black Flag, Ubisoft is selling “The Illustrious Pirates” DLC pack for $7 on PlayStation and Xbox Consoles (also on PC, starting tomorrow). Season pass holders for Black Flag will receive the content as part of that deal. The content includes all the single-player missions (Black Island, Mystery Island, and Sacrifice Island), weapons, ships, ship wheels, and multiplayer items that were spread amongst various retailers at the game’s launch.

Ubisoft’s plan to sell Black Flag‘s retailer-exclusive content to everyone isn’t unique in the gaming industry. Obviously, however, it makes the content not so retailer-exclusive after all. Though the move is certainly good for gamers who absolutely need every bit of Assassin’s Creed they can get, it does further expose retailer pre-order exclusives for the sham that they really are.

  • Amazon Sales Tax Now Reality For Over Half Of U.S. Population

Consumers in more states are about to find themselves paying sales tax when they shop online at Amazon. Online businesses in all states may one day be required to collect sales tax from everyone anyway, but Amazon currently finds itself on both sides of the “to tax or not to tax” argument as it resists tax requirements in some states while supporting legislation that would make tax collection ubiquitous throughout the nation.

Should all online businesses be required to collect sales tax from all consumers regardless of location? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Amazon is now collecting sales tax in three new states: Indiana, Nevada and Tennessee. Now it is doing so for a total of nineteen states, which according to the Wall Street Journal, account for over half of the country’s population.

Amazon has gone out of its way to avoid this in various states. A month ago, the company was denied a chance to fight New York’s requirement for Amazon to collect sales tax from purchases made in the state. The company had sought to battle this in the U.S. Supreme Court, but the court refused to hear the case, saying that the state’s efforts are constitutional.

This followed a New York law, which took effect in 2008, which meant that Amazon had to collect taxes in the state because it sold ads through a New York-based firm.

The company has also cut ties with affiliates in other states like Minnesota and Missouri to avoid collecting tax.

In 2016, Amazon is expected to begin collecting sales tax in more states like South Carolina and Florida.

But by then, the Marketplace Fairness Act may have been passed anyway, meaning that all online retailers in the U.S. would have to collect tax from everybody regardless of whether or not they have a physical presence in a state. While you may not know it from the company’s resistance to these state taxes, Amazon is one of the biggest supporters of this bill, which passed in the Senate last year.

As our own Zach Walton explained in a recent article, it’s all about priorities for Amazon. “The Marketplace Fairness Act wouldn’t affect Amazon that much as it continues to build out more fulfillment centers in more states thus giving it a physical presence in more states. If the Marketplace Fairness Act isn’t passed, the retailer obviously doesn’t want to be stuck collecting sales taxes in states that it doesn’t have a presence in. That way Amazon can then barter with those states to collect sales tax in exchange for the state helping to build more fulfillment centers.”

And those are coming rapidly. In 2013 alone, the company announced new fulfillment centers for Connecticut, Wisconsin, California, Maryland, Florida and Texas.

As Walton noted, the situation in New York didn’t exactly cater to Amazon’s “play it safe” mentality.

Meanwhile, the Marketplace Fairness Act continues to sit in limbo as we head into the new year. House speaker John Boehner expressed his resistance to the bill last year, saying it would put “a big burden on some very small businesses,” as it would require them to comply with the sales tax codes of 50 different states. This has been a common point of conflict for those opposed to the legislation. Boehner said he would “probably not” vote to pass the bill.

Either way, it looks like Amazon shoppers in more and more states will be paying sales taxes as time goes on.

The latest states to adopt the Amazon sales tax are expected to generate $50 million in new revenue. Sales tax is 7% in Indiana and Tennessee and 6.85% in Nevada.

Should Amazon and other and other online businesses be required to collect sales tax in all states? Share your thoughts in the comments.

  • Wii Fit U Heads To Retail On January 10

Wii Fit U Heads To Retail On January 10

In early November, Nintendo released Wii Fit U on the Nintendo eShop with a 30 day free trial for those who already owned a Wii balance board. To make the deal even sweeter, anybody who purchased a Wii Fit U Fit Meter for $20 would be able to upgrade the trial to the full game and keep it forever. For those who aren’t into the digital marketplace, Nintendo has a retail package coming your way soon.

Nintendo announced today that Wii Fit U will finally hit retail shelves on January 10 in two SKUs. The first will include the game, a Fit Meter and a balance board for $90. For those who already have a balance board, you’ll be able to pick up the game and a Fit Meter for $50. The one month free trial will remain available until January 31.

Wii Fit U makes fitness fun. It’s as simple as that,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Wii Fit U is a great option for busy moms and families who want to stay active in the comfort of their own homes – which is perfect during the cold winter months.”

To help promote Wii Fit U’s North American launch, Nintendo has partnered with celebrity trainer Kathy Kaehler to promote the game through what Nintendo calls the Wii Fit U Challenge. In essence, the campaign will emphasize the health benefits of Wii Fit U and encourage users to train their bodies using Wii Fit U throughout the year.

“As a mom of three kids, I know how difficult it can sometimes be to find time to go to the gym,” Kaehler said. “The exercises in Wii Fit U are designed to accommodate busy schedules and can be accomplished throughout the day. Plus, it’s a fun activity for the entire family.”

If you want to stay fit using video games and don’t have a Wii U, there is another option. Xbox Fitness is a new subscription service that hit the Xbox One in late 2013 that uses the Kinect camera and a variety of trainers to help users stay fit. There’s no comparable service yet available on the PS4, but that will likely change in the coming year.

  • Amazon Sales Tax Laws Expand to Three More States

Consumers in Indiana, Nevada and Tennessee will no longer get a free pass on sales tax when shopping on Amazon.com. Starting today, residents in those states will join the 16 other states in the country that automatically pay tax on Amazon purchases. South Carolina is not far behind, consumers in the Palmetto State, will begin paying taxes on all purchases from the monster online retailer starting in 2016.

The three new state additions are expected to generate about $50 million a year in tax dollars. Amazon tried and failed to keep sales tax laws from expanding. Their argument has always been that since they are not a “brick and mortar” retailer, but instead an online presence, consumers who shop with them should not have to pay a state sales tax. In fact, that’s always been a huge advantage for Amazon. However, the company’s competitors brought their battle to court in an effort to try and keep up with the retail juggernaut.

This past December, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Amazon’s appeal regarding a New York court ruling that required the retailer to collect sales tax in the state. That ruling will most likely serve as a precedent for future rulings. In other words, if you live in one of the 30 states where you currently are not required to pay a sales tax on Amazon.com purchases, enjoy it while you can.

Amazon’s strategy has always been about offering price-advantages for their customers. Sales tax varies from state to state, residents in Indiana and Tennessee pay a 7% sales tax. Residents in Nevada pay a 6.85% sales tax. However, do not think for a single second that Amazon is not finding new ways to differentiate its product and keep consumers coming back. Want same day delivery? How about Sunday delivery? How about delivery via drone? It’s all in the works as the retail giant keeps finding advantages in every possible nook and cranny imaginable.

  • Netflix Tests Lower-Priced, Standard-Def Subscription

    Netflix Tests Lower-Priced, Standard-Def Subscription

Netflix is everywhere. The company’s streaming video app can be found on set-top boxes, smartphones, tablets, video game consoles, smart TVs, and other devices. This ubiquity has allowed Netflix to grow beyond its DVD-by-mail roots and become the largest player in the quickly-growing video streaming market.

Along with this popularity, though, comes a problem: how to prevent subscribers from sharing streaming accounts across with others. Netflix’s millions of subscribers are a great continuing source of revenue for the company, but grabbing those few potential subscribers who share an account with a friend or family member is quickly becoming one of the only ways Netflix can expand in near-saturated markets such as the U.S.

Netflix’s solution to the problem so far has been to embrace subscriber habits to some extent, but limit the number of screens that subscribers can watch Netflix on simultaneously. The company’s basic streaming video package now allows subscribers to watch video through Netflix on two screens at once, while a higher-price family-style package allow up to four screens at once.

This week Netflix has introduced a third tier intended for those who never share their streaming account with anyone. The new tier would allow new subscribers to watch Netflix on only one screen at a time. However, the new tier does not offer any Netflix video in high definition, making it suitable only for those who still do not own an HD TV or those who don’t mind the lower-quality video. The package is priced at $6.99 – one dollar less than the standard two-screen streaming package.

According to an Adweek report, the new tier is, at this point, only a test. Netflix has stated that not every new subscriber will be offered the new package, though it could certainly roll out to more people in the future.

  • Best Treadmills Of 2013- Which Is Right For You?

Have you made losing weight and getting into shape your New Year’s resolution? One of the best ways to exercise at home is by running on a treadmill. When it comes to buying a treadmill, you have a lot of options. If you want to make sure you are getting the best machine for your money and fitness level, there are a few things you should consider.

One of the first things you should consider is the price you are willing to pay or can afford for a treadmill. If you are serious about fitness and know you will use the treadmill on a regular basis and for several years, than you may want to pay a little more for one. If you are just getting started, a cheaper model may be a better option to start out with.

Higher end treadmills such as the The Landice L7 are designed for professionals and retail for about $3,500. They have a variety of features and are well worth the price for those who are devoted to staying in shape. A cheaper model that also has great features is the the Horizon T101-04.

Another thing to consider is where you will store your treadmill when you are not using it. If you are lucky enought to have a gym or fitness area in your home or garage, you may not have to worry about this, but for most people, smaller is better.

Many treadmills fold up so they can easily be stored in closets or the corner of rooms. Others break down so they can be slid under beds for easy storage. The Weslo Cardio Stride 3.0 is a manual treadmill that folds up nicely and is also only $150.

If you are more concerned about features than price and storage, the LifeSpan TR1200-DT5 may be the right option for you. If you like to work out for long periods of time and also want to work, read or do other things while walking on your treadmill, the desk that attaches to this treadmill may be extremely beneficial to you. It costs around $2,000.

When it’s time to get in shape for the new year, take your time choosing your treadmill so you can ensure that you are getting one that you will use and love.

  • Chinese Mobile Subscriptions Continued to Rise in November

Chinese Mobile Subscriptions Continued to Rise in November

Having a sizable chunk of the world’s population, tech manufacturers and service providers rightly see China as a huge potential growth market. As smartphone and tablet technologies begins to proliferate throughout the country, more and more of China’s citizens are now becoming mobile subscribers.

According to a new DigiTimes report, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China has just unveiled its new numbers for the month of November. The ministry report shows that more than 1.2 billion Chinese citizens are now mobile subscribers. This represents a nearly 11% increase from the number of mobile subscribers seen in November 2012. It also means that China is quickly closing in on a fully saturated mobile population, with over 89% of the Chines population now mobile subscribers.

Even more exciting for manufacturers is the fact that a sizable portion of those subscribers are now accessing the internet through their devices. More than 803 million Chinese mobile subscribers have access to the internet through their devices, representing nearly two-thirds (65.7%) of all Chinese mobile subscribers. A bit less than half of those subscribers (386.8 million, or over 31% of all Chinese mobile subscribers) are able to access the internet through a 3G connection.

These numbers will no doubt continue to encourage smartphone manufacturers that have racing to introduce low-cost smartphone handsets and tablets to China and other emerging markets. Even Apple, with its iPhone 5C, is tacitly acknowledging the power of lower-cost hardware in growing markets. The obstacle now will be for name brands to compete with smaller “white-box” brands, which have found success with their super-low prices in markets where they can heavily undercut the branded competition – especially China.

  • Amazon Sold 36.8 Million Items on Cyber Monday

In less than two decades Amazon has managed not only to become the internet’s largest retailer, but also a major competitor to traditional retailers such as Walmart. The success of the website continues to grow each year, and this year’s holiday season looks to be the biggest ever for Amazon.com.

Amazon has now revealed a few choice statistics from its 2013 holiday sales. The most impressive might be that Amazon customers ordered more than 36.8 million items from the website on “Cyber Monday” (the online equivalent of Black Friday). That equates to around 426 items ordered from the site every second.

Amazon’s big Kindle Fire bet seems to be paying off as well. According to the company its Kindle Fire tablets were the most popular tablets sold on its website. IBM analytics last week found that over 19% of all online sales Christmas day came from tablets, and Amazon’s customers were even more likely to use mobile devices as more than half of their customers shopped using a mobile device this holiday season.

All of this is tied into Amazon’s subscription service, Amazon Prime. Where other tech companies have been trying to attach their hardware to recurring revenue streams, few have achieved success in the consumer market outside of video game console manufacturers. Through Prime, Amazon encourages customers to buy more with free shipping, as well as consumer more media through Amazon Instant Video and its Kindle Lending Library program.

According to Amazon, more than one million new Prime subscribers signed up during the third week of December. The company was forced to limit new Prime sign-ups at some points this holiday season to keep it running smoothly.

“Amazon Prime membership continues to grow, and we now have tens of millions of members worldwide,” said Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon. They benefit from all-you-can-eat free two-day shipping on millions of eligible items and our members have a voracious appetite.”

  • Barnes & Noble Offers $5 Credit To All New Nook Owners

Did you get a Nook for Christmas? Well, Barnes & Noble thanks you for helping to keep its beleaguered tablet business alive for another quarter. As thanks, it wants to give you a little gift before the holidays are officially over.

Barnes & Noble announced today that all new Nook device owners will get $5 credit which can be used on anything in the store, from books and movies to apps and games. To redeem your credit, you just have to activate your new Nook by setting up an account on the device.

“Nook tablets and eReaders continue to be big hits with kids and adults who want the best experience for digital content, and we are welcoming all of the new Nook owners with $5 to help get their library started,” said Jim Hilt, Vice President of eBooks at Barnes & Noble. “Barnes & Noble is also offering great post-holiday values on the leading digital content, making now the best time for customers to load their new Nook device with books, magazines, apps, movies and more.”

To help you buy something with that $5 in credit, Barnes & Noble says that the bestselling Nook titles are half off for a limited time. Some of the books included in the sale are Dan Brown’s Inerno and Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep. In addition to the book sale, Nook customers can also subscribe to two magazines for the price of one. You can find out more here.

There’s no word on when the $5 credit offer expires, but you might want to pick up a Nook sooner rather than later if you want to take advantage of this admittedly meager offer.

  • A Lot Of People Became Amazon Prime Members During The Holidays

In late November, Amazon finally allowed its customers to gift Amazon Prime subscriptions to their friends and family members. Free two-day shipping for a year is the perfect gift for the frequent Amazon shopper, but it was hard to say if this new gifting option would actually lead to more subscribers.

Oh, who am I kidding? Of course it did.

Amazon announced today that it set a new record for new Amazon Prime subscriptions in the third week of December by signing up more than 1 million new members. This new wave of Prime members also led to Amazon shipping out more packages than ever before on its peak shipping day. All of this and more led to Amazon having the best holiday shopping season on record.

“Amazon Prime membership continues to grow, and we now have tens of millions of members worldwide. They benefit from all-you-can-eat free two-day shipping on millions of eligible items and our members have a voracious appetite,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. “We are extremely grateful to our customers around the world and wish everyone the very best for the coming year.”

Speaking of Amazon Prime, here are some fun facts regarding Amazon’s holiday shipping this year:

  • Amazon shipped to 185 countries this holiday.
  • The last Prime One-Day Shipping order that was delivered in time for Christmas was placed on Dec. 23 at 10:22 p.m. PST and shipped to Carlsbad, California. The item was a Beautyrest Cotton Top Mattress Pad.
  • The last Local Express Delivery order that was delivered in time for Christmas went to Everett, Washington. It was a Plantronics Audio 655 USB Multimedia Headset in Frustration Free Packaging ordered at 12:26 p.m. PST on Christmas Eve and delivered at 3:56 p.m. PST that same day.
  • Amazon.com shipped enough items with Prime this holiday to deliver at least one gift to every household in America.
  • Prime was so popular this holiday, that Amazon limited new Prime membership signups during peak periods to ensure service to current members was not impacted by the surge in new membership.
  • In the same announcement, Amazon revealed some of its best selling items over the holidays. As you might expect, the Kindle Fire HDX family were the best selling tablets. In laptops, the Chromebook and the ASUS Transformer were the top performers. As for video games, Call of Duty: Ghosts for Xbox 360 took the top spot followed by Just Dance 2014 for Wii.
