‘Now You See Me’ Would Be A Lot Better With Gob Bluth And Some Hot Cops

YouTuber James Harrop has given us the gift of “Gob Bluth Stars In Now You See Me,” inserting the famous illusionist from Arrested Development, and his “Hot Cop” friends into the trailer for the magic bank heist movie starring Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo and Jesse Eisenberg.

I’ll admit I haven’t seen the film, but I have a hard time believing it wouldn’t be better with Gob and the Hot Cops. TheEuphBeast, commenting on YouTube, seems to concur:

The movie would be a billion times better with Gob. Thank you, my good sir, for making this.

  • Microsoft Drops $700M on Des Moines Data Center

The Des Moines register has reported that Microsoft is investing nearly $700 million in a massive new data center in West Des Moines, Iowa. The Iowa Economic Development Authority Board has approved around $20 million in tax credits for the software company to locate its servers there.

Microsoft will spend $677.6 million to expand existing facilities in the Des Moines area. The company has now invested close to $1 billion in the Des Moines area. The new data center is will reportedly be used to power Microsoft’s Xbox Live and Office 365 server-side features. In particular, Microsoft is stating that the new servers will provide “cloud” services to its customers.

During Microsoft’s recent announcement of its upcoming Xbox One video game console, the company stated that it has increased the scope of its Xbox LIVE subscription service, and now has over 300,000 servers backing up its system. Microsoft is also promising “cloud computing” that video game developers can use to shore-up the Xbox One’s computing power, though many gamers are, with good reason, skeptical of such claims.

Similarly, Microsoft just recently released a version of Microsoft Office for iOS platforms such as the iPhone. The app requires a subscription to Microsoft’s Office 365 service, which the company brands as “your complet Office in the cloud.”

The Midwestern U.S., with lower utility costs and the incentive of tax breaks, is quickly becoming the place for technology companies to invest in server farms. Companies such as Facebook and Google have poured billions into states such as Iowa and Nebraska in recent years.

  • Apple Drops Some App Store Stats At WWDC

Apple Drops Some App Store Stats At WWDC

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference kicked off today, and as usual, the keynote began with a bunch of Apple stats.

Before showing a video of the company’s latest retail store opening in Berlin, CEO Tim Cook revealed that a million people went to Apple’s retail stores per day last year. They now have 47 stores around the world in 14 countries. This particular store was opened in a hundred-year-old building.

On the digital side of things, Cook announced that people have downloaded 50 billion apps from the App Store. There are currently 900,000 apps in the store, and 93% of them, he said, are downloaded every month.

There are 375,000 apps specifically for the iPad, he noted.

There are 575 million store accounts.

Cook also announced that Apple has paid developers ten billion dollars, more than all of the other platforms combined, he said. The App Store, he said, “levels the playing field” between large and small developers.

The App Store will celebrate its 5th birthday next month.

  • Alabama: Kidnapping Involves Crimson Tide Forward Devonta Pollard

Devonta Pollard, an 18-year-old sophmore forward for the University of Alabama’s basketball team, is one of seven people charged in connection with the kidnapping of a 6-year-old girl back in April. Pollard has been charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

According to a Tuscaloosa News report, the charge stems from the kidnapping of Jashayla Hopson, who was taken from her Scooba, Mississippi elementary school on April 30. The kidnappers were alleged to have been led by Pollard’s mother, Jesse Pollard. Devonta was allegedly involved in coordinating logistics and providing rides for people during the kidnapping.

A court filing states that Hopson was taken to a Laurel, Mississippi hotel room while one of the kidnappers contacted the girl’s mother to demand a $50,000 ransom. When Jessee Pollard was called in for a lie detector test the next day, the kidnapping plot was abandoned. Hopson was dropped off on a remote country road and told to run over and knock on the door of a stranger’s trailer. A rental car used in the kidnapping was then abandoned in a ditch.

The alleged motive for the kidnapping was a feud between Jesse Pollard and Hopson’s mother. The kidnapping trial is set to begin on August 6.

  • Zynga Shuts Down Draw Something Developer OMGPOP

In March of last year, Zynga made one of its most high profile acquisitions in OMGPOP. The studio was responsible for Draw Something – one of the most popular mobile games of last year. Soon after, Zynga began to fall apart with share prices sliding, a number of high profile departures and its investment in Draw Something proving to be a disaster. Now Zynga is starting to cut what it can, and OMGPOP was among the casualties.

TechCrunch reports that OMGPOP has been shut down. There has been no official statement from Zynga, but the studio and its employees have taken to Twitter to announce that the studio is no more.

The closure of OMGPOP comes right on the heels of yesterday’s announcement that Zynga would be laying off 520 of its employees. The company also shut down its New York, Dallas and LA offices.

It’s unknown if the closure of OMGPOP will affect the continued operation of Draw Something and its sequel Draw Something 2. The latter just launched on iOS in April, and an Android release was in the works. We’ve reached out to Zynga to find out if Draw Something will be affected by the closure and we’ll update if and when we hear back.

  • ‘The Sopranos’ Tops Best Written TV Show List

In arguments about the best TV shows of all time, The Sopranos will invariably come up. The show, which follows antihero Tony Soprano as he reconciles his mobster lifestyle with a family and mental health issues, became a huge hit for HBO and spawned the modern era of premium cable dramas. Now, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has officially named The Sopranos the best written TV show of all time.

The WGA has just released its list of the 101 best written TV series’ of all time. The list was created using online votes from the WGA’s members.

One other HBO show appears in the top 10, The Wire, coming in at number 9. Many of the other shows toping the list, such as All in the Family (#4) and M*A*S*H (#5), dealt with issues that were controversial in their time. Others, such as Seinfeld (#2) and The Twilight Zone (#3) placed highly on the strength of creative writing. Some fan favorites that appear in the top 20 include Mad Men (#7), The Simpsons (#11), Breaking Bad (#13), Arrested Development (#17), and Six Feet Under (#18).

“At their core, all of these wonderful series began with the words of the writers who created them and were sustained by the writers who joined their staffs or worked on individual episodes,” said WGA Presidents Chris Keyser and Michael Winship in joint a statement. “This list is not only a tribute to great TV, it is a dedication to all writers who devote their hearts and minds to advancing their craft.”

  • Netflix Unlocked This Weekend for All Xbox LIVE Users, Just in Time for Arrested Development

If you’re excited about this weekend’s big Arrested Development season 4 premiere and you want to watch it on your TV, Microsoft is giving you another option.

The Xbox Netflix app will be unlocked this weekend – meaning that those with just an Xbox LIVE Silver membership will be able to utilize the app (as long as you have a Netflix subscription). Usually, you must have an Xbox LIVE Gold subscription to access Netflix.

“If you’ve been yearning for more of the Bluth family, look no further. The new season of Arrested Development finally premieres this Sunday, May 26. And it gets even better. Starting today, Xbox Live Gold will be unlocked* for the weekend for Netflix members in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Brazil, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Chile, Colombia and Argentina. Basically, we’ve made it ridiculously really easy for you to catch up on the first three seasons of Arrested Development. If you’re not a Netflix member, fear not,” says the Xbox Wire.

The new season of Arrested Development drops (all 15 episodes) at 12:01 am PT on Sunday. Netflix offers a free 1-month trial right now, so it looks like the perfect storm for Xbox LIVE Silver members who want to watch via their Xbox. If you want to get caught up, you have until then to stream the first 3 seasons, which are all available on Netflix.

This sort of deal promotes binge watching – but be careful. According to Arrested Development’s creator, that could make it less fun. Marathonning is hard to resist, however. So, do what you want.

  • Samsung Rebrands All of its Laptops, Launches Two New Ones

Samsung Rebrands All of its Laptops, Launches Two New Ones

While the U.S. braces for the imminent launch of the Galaxy S4, Samsung has also quietly been selling its laptops. The Korean electronics manufacturer this week announced that it has rebranded its entire Windows PC lineup to fit under the ATIV brand.

The move is meant to make it easier for customers to tell Samsung‘s laptops apart, but it could ultimately end up being just as confusing. While the renaming of the ATIV Smart PC and the ATIV Smart PC Pro to the ATIV Tab 5 and the ATIV Tab 7, respectively, isn’t too much to think about, The Series 5 510 and the Series 3 370 will both now share the name ATIV Book 4. And while Samsung’s all-in-one laptops will be rebranded as ATIV One laptops, devices that weren’t previously branded Smart PC or all-in-one PC are now branded ATIV Book devices with a corresponding number.

The confusion continues ast the numbers will be shifting from previous brand names. For example, the Series 7 Chronos will now be the ATIV Book 8, the Series 3 300 will be the ATIV Book 2, and the Series 5 Chronos will – you know what? Just have a look below at the renaming chart Samsung has provided. And make sure to keep it handy in case you find yourself in the market for a Samsung laptop.

    Samsung's ATIV rebranding chart

“Samsung has been the fastest growing PC brand for the past three years, in part because of our commitment to developing solutions that meet and exceed the ever-evolving needs of our customers,” said Mike Abary, SVP of product marketing at Samsung Electronics America. “Our expanded ATIV brand and the introduction of solutions like SideSync create the necessary synergy between our mobile and PC lines to create real ease of use for consumers. These synergies enable us to maintain our momentum and continue to offer our customers innovations that enhance the way they live and work.”

  • Video Sharing Can Help Developers Build A Community

Back in March, YouTube announced that it was developing a live streaming API for game developers. The API, when integrated into games, would allow players to live stream their game straight to YouTube from game consoles. The API has already been incredibly successful in its first run on Call of Duty: Black Ops II and now more developers have come forward with success stories.

Free Range Games and Kamcord Discuss building your community with video sharing. We will demo Free Range Games’ YouTube API integration in APO Snow

  • Facebook Home Tops 500K Installs, Over 50% 1-Star Reviews

Facebook Home, Facebook’s Android homescreen takeover, has been available for just over a week. In that time, we’ve seen the app take on a barrage of negative reviews.

But people are still downloading it and trying it out. As of today, Facebook Home on Google Play has surpassed 500,000 installs.

We don’t know the exact number of installs, as Google Play only gives us an unspecific snapshot of the numbers. Right now, it says that the number of installs is somewhere between 500,000 and 1 million. The Next Web noticed that Twitter users noticed the jump from “100,000 to 500,000” to “500,000 to 1 million” some time on Sunday.

500,000 may seem like a small number of installs, considering that Facebook has over a billion monthly active users and that something like the Facebook app has between 100 million and 500 million installs. But in a week’s time, to be working its way to a million installs, is pretty good for Facebook Home considering it’s only available on a handful of Android devices.

Still, the news isn’t nearly all positive for Facebook. Facebook Home is still suffering from poor user reviews. Last week, we told you that after just 3 days on the market, Facebook Home had sunk to an average rating of 2.4 out of 5 in the Google Play Store. At that time, 47% of all reviews awarded the app 1 star.

Now, at Facebook Home surpassed 500,000 installs, the negativity is growing. The average rating has fallen to 2.2 and 1-star reviews now account for nearly 52% of all reviews.

  • Developers Can Get Their Hands On Firefox OS Dev Units Next Week

Until now, developers interested in getting their hands on actual Firefox OS hardware had to either attend a workshop or install the OS on their Sony android device. Now Geeksphone is finally ready to start shipping out Firefox OS dev units.

Engadget reports that Geeksphone will start selling the Keon and Peak Firefox OS dev units next week. The Keon will retail for €91, while the Peak will retail for €149. It seems cheap, and that’s because developers will be getting cheap phones. The hardware isn’t going to win any awards and it isn’t meant to. Firefox OS hardware is targeting developing markets, and the cheap price reflects that.

If you do want at least a little power, you’ll want to go with the Peak. It’s a mid-range smartphone with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 and a 4.3-inch display. The Keon only has a Snapdragon S1 so developers will have to get a little creative when designing apps around the lower end of the hardware spectrum.

Thankfully, Geeksphone will be selling the phones worldwide instead of just in the countries where Firefox OS will be launching. Developers in the U.S. will be able to build apps to take advantage of the increasingly lucrative smartphone market in developing countries.

If you can’t afford or don’t want one of Geeksphone’s smartphones, you can always use the Firefox OS simulator. The simulator piggybacks off of your Firefox desktop installation to emulate the Firefox OS experience on the desktop. From there, you can test and debug any HTML5 apps you may have in the works.

  • T-Mobile Drops The Contract In Favor Of A Simple Choice

It’s been hinted at for a while that T-Mobile would be moving away from the traditional two-year contract business model. Now the company has fully unveiled its new plan – dubbed Simple Choice – at its UnCarrier event.

So, what can you expect from T-Mobile’s new Simple Choice plan? It’s actually very similar to how two-year contract plans work, just minus the contract. The consumer still gets a subsidized phone while paying a monthly fee. The only difference is that the remaining cost of the phone is paid off in small payments that are added onto your monthly bill. Once the phone is paid off, the fee comes off your monthly bill.

As for the pricing, the Simple Choice plan is very reasonable. For a single line, consumers get unlimited talk/text plus 500MB of data for $50 per month. For $10 more, consumers can upgrade to 2GB a month. At $20 more, consumers get unlimited 4G. Those on the 500MB or 2GB plans won’t have to worry about overage fees, however, as T-Mobile will only drop you down to 2G speeds if you go over.

For those with families, T-Mobile’s Simple Choice plan charges $30 extra for a second line and $10 more for each extra line.

Of course, a plan is only as good as the phones being offered by the carrier. T-Mobile has that covered as the company offers very attractive prices for flagship devices like the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note 2. The carrier also plans to offer the Galaxy S 4 and the HTC One when those become available later this one.

On a final note, T-Mobile will finally offer the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 starting April 12. Apple’s latest flagship device will only be $99, plus $20 more a month for two years.

T-Mobile still has a long way to go before it can take on heavyweights like Verizon and AT&T, but this move will hopefully push the U.S.-based carriers to drop contracts in favor of more consumer friendly plans like T-Mobile’s Simple Choice.

  • Want A Firefox OS Phone? Attend One Of These Workshops

Want A Firefox OS Phone? Attend One Of These Workshops

Mozilla announced a while back that it would start selling Firefox OS Developer Preview phones sometime in February. That obviously didn’t happen, and there’s no mention of when the phones will be widely available to developers. Until then, you’re best chance to get one is at one of Mozilla’s recently announced workshops.

Mozilla announced today that it will be hosting a number of Firefox OS App Workshops starting in April. The first will take place on April 20 in Madrid, Spain; the second on May 18 in Bogotá, Colombia; and the third on June 1 in Warsaw, Poland. Mozilla says that it plans to have more workshops in more locations later on in the year.

So, what will those attending the workshops receive? Mozilla says it will be offering the usual free swag, like t-shirts, and a free meal to all attendees, but the real treat is that all those in attendance will receive a Firefox OS Developer Preview phone.

All Mozilla asks is that those wanting to attend have “solid ideas and strong Web development skills.” In other words, it’s looking for developers who have built apps using open Web development platforms like PhoneGap, Chrome, webOS, BlackBerry Webworks, etc.

Those attending can also look forward to working one-on-one Mozilla’s own Firefox OS development team to create new apps for Firefox OS or port an existing app to the HTML5-centric mobile OS.

If you wish to attend, you’ll have to apply for a spot at one of the events. Mozilla says they’ll be approving applications on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Not Many Developers Are Working On Wii U Games

The Wii U has a few obstacles it needs to overcome, but the biggest is definitely its lack of software. A recent poll of developers shows that the Wii U’s software drought may not be ending anytime soon.

A new survey out of the Game Developers Conference polled a number of developers asking which platforms they’re developing for. Surprisingly, the Wii U came in dead last with only 4.6 percent of developers saying they were working on a title for Nintendo’s console. Other consoles didn’t fare too well either as only 13.2 percent of developers are making a game for the Xbox 360, whereas 13 percent are working on the PlayStation 3.

Drops in console development leave plenty of room for PC and mobile development to pick up the slack. An astonishing 55 percent of developers said that they’re making their next game for smartphones or tablets. Another 48 percent said that their next game would be on the PC and/or Mac.

Now, before everybody starts freaking out, these numbers need a little context. For starters, GDC is no longer attended exclusively by people working at a major publisher. In fact, most of the attendees at GDC these past few years have been indie developers. The latest numbers only reinforce that fact as over 53 percent of respondents to the GDC survey identified themselves as an indie developer.

So, how does tie into the low console numbers, and high mobile numbers? It shows that indie developers are flocking to the PC and mobile markets because they’re easier and cheaper to develop for. It doesn’t hurt that PC and mobile platforms are far more open than consoles, despite Sony’s and Nintendo’s best efforts to fix that.

In short, the high number of indie developers attending GDC ensures that the numbers for indie platforms, like mobile and PC, are going to be higher. Now this doesn’t mean that Nintendo gets away without any criticism. It needs to do a better job of courting third-party developers and indies. The Wii U launched with a great selection of indie titles, and the hardware maker needs to continue that trend going into the future.

As big AAA games start to cost more and take more time to develop, the smaller indie titles will become increasingly more important to the livelihood of any platform. Sony seems to embracing the indie developer with the PS4 saying the console will support any kind of game. Nintendo is reportedly doing much the same with the Wii U. Now these hardware makers just have to prove it by securing quality indie content while supporting these developers with the help they need to realize their vision.

  • Home Depot Drops BlackBerry In Favor Of Apple’s iPhone

When it was unveiled, BlackBerry 10 was seen as the shining light for RIM BlackBerry as it heads back to the path of profitability. The platform’s fans think this is the one that will succeed, but the company still has a major problem ahead of it. It’s traditionally strong enterprise customer base is shrinking.

Tom’s Hardware reports that Home Depot is taking its employees off BlackBerry in favor of Apple’s iPhone. It’s a pretty hard hit for the company as Home Depot had 10,000 employees on the BlackBerry platform. It’s unknown if the transition to the iPhone occurred before or after the BlackBerry 10 announcement.

This isn’t the first major loss for BlackBerry as other major businesses and government agencies have been moving their employees off BlackBerry in favor of iOS or Android devices. Late last year, Yahoo kickstarted the migration away from BlackBerry when the company offered to buy every employee a smartphone, but only offered iPhones or Android devices. Soon after, government consulting firm Booz Allen and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board also moved their employees off of BlackBerry.

Despite all of this bad news, BlackBerry 10 may be doing decently well. BlackBerry announced last week that first day sales of the Z10 was the best the company had ever seen. In a statement to Tom’s Hardware, the company also said that “over 2,7000 unique businesses in North America already registered for our BlackBerry 10 Ready Program.”

In short, BlackBerry is losing business, and that’s a bad thing. To counter this, it’s Z10 handsets seem to be doing decently well, and it still has quite a few Enterprise customers. That’s a good thing. We’ll have to wait a bit longer to see if the good outweighs the bad when BlackBerry 10 launches across all major carriers in the U.S. next month.

  • NASA Develops a 3-D Imaging Radar For Oil Spills

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) researchers have developed a method of using a specialized 3-D imaging radar to “characterize” the oil in oil spills. This represents the first time it has been demonstrated that such a radar system can be used to distinguish thin films, such as oil sheen, from from thick oil emulsions.

The technique was developed in part in 2010, during the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Researchers used the JPL-developed Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperature Radar (UAVSAR) to collect radar imagery (such as that seen above) over the main slick of the BP spill on three deployments between June 2010 and July 2012. A NASA C-20A piloted aircraft was used to transport the UAVSAR, which was mounted in a pod beneath the aircraft.

“Our research demonstrates the tremendous potential of UAVSAR to automate the classification of oil in a slick and mitigate the effects of future oil spill tragedies,” said Cathleen Jones, a researcher at JPL. “Such information can help spill incidence response commanders direct cleanup operations, such as the mechanical recovery of oil, to the areas of thick oil that would have the most damaging environmental impacts.”

Current oil classification techniques rely on visual surveys from experts. Remote sensing with UAVSAR can cover larger areas and is available at night or during poor weather conditions when visual surveys are not an option.

The UAVSAR categorizes an oil slick by detecting variations in the roughness of its surface and for a thick slick it measures the changes in electrical conductivity of its surface layer. NASA states that UAVSAR “sees” oil spills at sea as a radar-dark area against the rougher ocean surface because most of the radar energy hitting a smoother surface is deflected away from the radar antenna.

In June 2010, the UAVSAR collected data over an area of more than 46,330 square miles along the Gulf Coast. The data showed researchers that, at the time, much of the main oil slick from the BP spill was made up of thick emulsions of oil and seawater.

“We knew we were going to detect the extent of the spill,” said Ben Holt, another researcher at JPL. “But we had this great new instrument, so we wanted to see how it would work in this extreme situation, and it turned out to be really unique and valuable, beyond all previous radar results for spills.”

  • Apple Develops iShiv for Rioting Foxconn Workers

As you may have heard, a large riot rocked Foxconn’s Taiyuan plant in Northern China earlier this week. According to reports, the riot involved 2,000 people and took place near the worker’s dormitories. When it was all said and done, the riot resulted in a few dozen injuries and multiple arrests.

According to social media posts, the riots began, in part, when security guards attacked a worker. This isn’t the first time that a Foxconn plant has hosted a riot, as one in Chengdu earlier this year involved a similar set of circumstances.

Of course, Foxconn is well known as the makers of Apple products, including the iPhone 5. It only makes sense that Apple would feel responsible and want to help the rioting workers who shoulder their outsourced burden.

Team Coco imagines the device Apple would make in this situation, and it’s pretty hilarious. Check out the (obviously comedic) bit below:

  • DARPA Develops Robotic Arm Controlled By Thoughts

The things that man can continually do these days never ceases to amaze me. A lot of the stuff lately seems to come from DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). They recently started a competition to have companies make more human like robots to complete challenges. Now the smarty pants’ over at DARPA have come up with something truly amazing.

They have managed to create a robotic limb that can move using only the users thoughts. Thats right, a robot controlled by your brain! They managed this feat by implanting Microelectrode arrays in the motor cortex of the brains of two tetraplegic (quadriplegic) patients. Then with little instruction the two patients were able to control the robotic arms.

Researchers working with DARPA included Brown University, Massachusetts General Hospital and the National Institutes of Health and they managed to “demonstrate direct neural control of an advanced prosthetic arm,” the agency announced.

Check out the video of the lady using the arm to drink out of a container. When you see her smile you realize that this lady just got a piece of her freedom back that we all take for granted every day of the week:

  • Sony Develops 1.5TB Stackable Optical Disks

The cloud is getting bigger and bigger every single day. But with the cloud comes the increased ability for hackers from either government or non-government entities to access vital information. That makes the need for physical data storage more paramount than ever before. Enter Sony, and their brand new physical optical mass storage solution due for release this fall. The new technology contains twelve optical discs which will be seen as one volume sized between 300GB and 1.5TB. This is about the same size as 12 full capacity blu-ray disks.

The cartridges will be released alongside compatible hardware in the form of the ODS-D55U USB 3.0 Optical Disc Archive. Sony also announced that several companies including BSkyB, CBS News, Time Warner Cable Sports, Fuji Television, and Tohokushinsha Films have all signed up already to use this new technology.

Furthermore, in addition to the production of media and drive units, Sony will collaborate with a variety of other manufacturers in related business areas such as storage media, robotics (automated media exchange systems), middleware (hierarchical storage management and control) and application software for media asset management (including media management and search) for the purpose of developing system solutions for media archive applications.

Sony lists these highlights on their product page for this device. But Strangely there is no price listing:

-Best suited for archiving any data file, long term

-Direct and quicker access than legacy linear data tape systems

-New optical disc cartridge, scalable capacity up to 1.5TB per cartridge

    -USB3.0 interface

-Robotics for ODS-D200U planned for the future

    -Available Fall 2012

  • NEC Develops Super Thin Battery For IC Cards

NEC recently announced the development of an ultra thin 0.3 mm organic radical battery (ORB) that is compatible with standard Integrated circuit (IC) cards (found on some credit cards, public transportation passes, and hotel keys).

Until now ORBs of 0.7mm thickness were standard, but this thickness is difficult to integrate into a plastic card that is only 0.76mm.

This new battery is superior in many ways and will offer new functionality that previous ORBs could not. The new ORB is more flexible, offers higher output and recharges faster. This could lead to cards that include an electronic display, antennae, or more advanced encryption technology.

The reduction in size was accomplished through new printing technologies that allow the battery to be printed directly on the card. A new polymer film of 0.05mm thickness was used, replacing the 0.2mm thickness aluminum laminate that is conventional for ORBs.

Prototypes are capable of 2,000 display screen updates, 360 consecutive flash firings and 35 location transmissions on a single charge. Furthermore, charge-discharge tests indicate that the batteries maintain 75% of their initial charge-discharge capacity after 500 cycles, equivalent to the performance of lithium-ion batteries for mobile phones.

Though the total power output is low at 3mAh capacity, the power density per volume is high at 5kW/L.

This technology could be used on IC credit cards to display the current balance directly on the card, or for security purposes to track where the card is without it physically being used. If they find a way to increase the power capacity, while maintaining the high power density per volume, the potential for this technology would be limitless.
