  • New York Gun Control Laws Upheld In Court

A federal judge has upheld most of New York’s gun control laws. Judge William M. Skretny said in today’s ruling that the restrictions on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines was in line with the “state’s important interest in public safety,” hence the law is constitutional.

However, Judge Skretny struck down the part of the law that restricted the number of bullets that can be loaded in a gun to 7, terming it “an arbitrary restriction” that was not in line with the Second Amendment. The 7-bullet restriction took effect in April when Governor Andrew Cuomo passed the legislation despite complaints by gun owners that seven round magazines are not readily available for sale. Though the 7-bullet restriction was lifted, the judge determined that gun magazines must now be limited to 10 bullets — which is a standard number of bullets for a magazine to hold — not 7.

Together with lawmakers, Gov.  Cuomo passed the legislation that restricted sale of rifles in January. The legislation was passed partly in reaction to the mass shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut last December. The law is one of the most restrictive gun control laws in the United States. Today’s ruling comes in response to a suit filed by New York State Rifle and Pistol Association as well as other groups that oppose Coumo’s law.

Several gun rights groups have sharply criticized the law. Despite many recent mass shootings pro-gun advocates  still believe the law violates their constitutional rights and they have vowed to continue their opposition.

  • Dwyane Wade Has A New Baby. Gabrielle Union Is Not The Mother

Just last week Dwyane Wade announced his engagement to actress Gabrielle Union. Now this week, Wade confirms that he fathered a son with a woman other than Union. Apparently Wade sought comfort in the arms of another woman during a one-month break in his relationship to Gabrielle Union. The child is about one month old now.

When asked if he had seen his new son yet, Wade responded,”Yeah, I’ve got a chance to see him. You know me. I’m involved in my kids’ lives. When my kids were living at home with me, or wasn’t living at home with me, I tried to do everything I could to see them. Obviously I got custody of them for different reasons, but nothing changes with my life. Like I’ve said, this is something that my family knows and my now fiancée worked through when we got back together, and understood that we wanted to continue our lives together and continue supporting our family and we’re going to do that. That’s what I’ve always done.”

The Miami Heat star is also a father to two other children, Zion and Zaire, from a previous marriage with Siohvaughn Funches. Wade was awarded custody of the kids after a three-year court battle with Funches.

The NBA star is all too aware of the public scrutiny that comes with fathering a child with someone other than his soon to be wife but he says he is prepared to face it. Right now, he says he is focused on being a great father and making sure he is involved in his kids’ lives.  “I’m always going to be a father first. That doesn’t change.” said Wade

Wade published a book called A Father First in 2012 in which he talks about how his life became bigger than basketball after becoming a father.

  • Mitt Romney Ridiculed For Having Black Grandson

MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry attracted outrage on MSNBC Sunday’s airing of “What’s So Funny About 2013?”  Harris-Perry and her guests poked fun at Mitt Romney’s black grandson pictured in a Christmas photo.  The photo features Romney and his extended family which includes baby Kieran, who was adopted by Romney’s Son Ben and his wife Andelynne.

The panel of comedians and liberal pundits on the show took the opportunity to turn the photo into an uncouth political joke.

Actress Pia Glenn added, “One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isn’t the same,” in reference to baby Keiran. “And that little baby, front and center, would be the one,” Glenn said.

“It really sums up the diversity of the Republican party, the RNC. At the convention, they find the one black person,” jested comedian Dean Obeidallah.

Melissa Harris-Perry is an African-American herself and her show normally focuses on black issues. Harris-Perry added to the joke by saying that she looked forward to a wedding between North West (Kanye West’s daughter) and Kieran Romney in 2040. For many viewers the “joke” was in poor taste and not very funny. Some have even called it racist.

Sarah Palin wrote in her Facebook page that the joke was despicable because the “media hounds” were expressing a prejudice and not an opinion. “This latest attack from the Left is despicable,” she said.  She further mocked them by calling them “yellow journalists” who needs to find a conscience.

Glenn was defensive in her response to a critic but she later apologized through her Twitter account, “In a spontaneous reaction to a photo, my disdain for Mitt Romney’s political platform led me to inadvertently insult adoptive families … I can say all day what I ‘meant,’ but my intentions do not negate the very real pain I have caused. I sincerely apologize.”

Obeidallah also later apologized in a statement to CNN and Harris-Perry took to Twitter to express her regret as well.

  • Michael Schumacher: Slightly Improved But Still In Critical Condition

French doctors treating former Formula One driver Michael Schumacher have announced today that his condition has improved but remains fragile after a successful overnight operation.

While skiing with his son on Sunday, Schumacher fell and hit his head against a large rock. The accident happened in the French Alps and has since left him fighting for his life.

Michael Schumacher is a 44-year-old retired German race car driver and a 7-time Formula One champion. Many regard him as one of the greatest Formula One racers of all time due to his numerous race victories. Schumacher retired in 2006 but made a comeback in 2010 before retiring again in 2012.

Doctors said there was internal bleeding within Schumacher’s skull but his condition had stabilized by Monday evening after an operation was carried out at Grenoble University Hospital in France.

“The situation is more under control than yesterday but we cannot say he is out of danger,” doctors told reporters in a news conference.  The doctors further said that it is improper to engage in premature speculation since Schumacher is still in a critical condition. He is under an artificially induced coma.

According to the doctors, Schumacher’s helmet saved his life. Had he not been wearing his helmet at the time he may have died on impact. At around 10pm, doctors were able to remove a large blood clot in the brain during the emergency operation. The operation was intended to take pressure off his brain.

“We can’t say that he is out of danger. The surgery bought us more time. The situation can improve as well as worsen,” said Dr. Jean-Francois Payen, head of the hospital’s anesthesia department. He also added that Schumacher still cannot be transferred to another hospital at the moment due to the fragile nature of his condition.

Schumacher’s family, friends and fans are hopeful that the racing legend will pull through.

  • Shin-Soo Choo To Sign $130 Million Deal With Texas Rangers

Shin-Soo Choo has agreed to a seven-year deal worth $130 million to sign with the Texas Rangers, sources told ESPN.

The sources have confirmed that the deal doesn’t include an opt-out clause. However, the deal includes a performance package and a limited no-trade provision.

Choo was the last top free agent hitter left on the market after Jacoby Ellsbury signed with the New York Yankees and Robinson Cano went to Seattle. At this point the deal is all but finalized, Choo must still pass a medical exam before he becomes a Rangers player. Choo had earlier turned down a seven-year deal worth about $140 million offered by New York Yankees. The Yankees later signed Ellsbury.  It is said Choo’s deal may have more value to him since Texas doesn’t have state income tax.

This move will certainly reinforce the Rangers offense where Choo will team up with Prince Fielder, who was acquired from Detroit earlier last month, and baseman Adrian Beltre. Choo scored 107 runs last season with the Cincinnati Reds but his prime strength is his ability to get to the base. He boasts a .389 on-base percentage over 9 seasons. As a matter of fact, he was the Reds’ second leading player in on-base percentage, behind Joey Votto.

Choo does, however, have a problem with left-handed pitchers. He has a .243 career batting average and a .680 0n-base percentage against left-handed pitching compared to a .309 and .932 against righties. Last season, he batted .215 against lefties and .317 vs. righties.

Analysts say that the Rangers were the most logical fit for Choo. His presence on the Rangers team will give a big boost to their offence. Choo’s agreement with the Rangers also means that outfield Nelson Cruz will likely get dropped from the team for next season.

  • John Hinckley: Attempted Reagan Assassin Gets More Time With Momma

John Hinckley Jr. is the man who attempted to assassinate former US President Ronald Reagan. The would-be assassin was found not guilty in court by reason of insanity. Today, Hinckley spends his time at St.Elizabeth Psychiatric Hospital in Washington.

The now 58-year-old Hinckley, attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981 in an effort to impress a teen actress.  Apart from seriously wounding Reagan, White House press secretary James Brady, Police officer Thomas Delahanty and Secret Service Agent Timothy McCarthy were all shot in the attack. They all survived.

Yesterday, a federal judge allowed Hinckley more days to visit his elderly mother in Williamsburg, VA. Before the judges ruling, Hinckley was restricted to only 10 days of visitation per month but he has now been granted 7 more days.

In a 106-page opinion, district Judge Paul Friedman said he was convinced that Hinckley would not endanger the lives of others and himself if he spends more hours away from the institution. However, Hinckley must prove to the court that he can better socialize and integrate himself in Williamsburg before granting him further visitation time.

The judge further noted that more visits to Williamsburg could offer Hinckley new employment opportunities and “structured community activities” than are available to him at the hospitals. The hospital is required to send regular reports to the court outlining his activities and movements while Hinckley is away in Williamsburg.

Nonetheless, this will not bring Hinckley’s case to a close. There have been legal debates over what should be done with Hinckley’s case with his doctors urging the judge to gradually expand Hinckley’s freedom and eventually give him total freedom. However, the judge wrote that it would not be wise to grant Hinckley further freedom without further evaluation.

Apparently there is still some question as to his trustworthiness. The judge gave an example where Hinckley had recently lied about watching two movies and also noted that he had not yet established any new associations to any groups or made any friendships in Williamsburg.

  • Winter Solstice: Prepare For A Really Long Night

Saturday night, Dec. 21st will be the longest night of the year — it will be Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. This means that North America will get only 9 hours and 32 minutes of sunshine as the night stretches on for more than 14 hours of darkness. The solstice will begin at 12:11 p.m. on Saturday.

During this time, the sun will be overhead along the Tropic of Capricorn, at 23.5 degrees south. Locations north of the equator will see the sun follow its shortest arc across the southern sky. The Earth’s North Pole will be at its maximum tilt away from the sun. In Washington DC, the sun will be above the horizon for 9 hours and 26 minutes but the day will be even shorter for cities in Canada that are closer to the Northern Pole.

The opposite will be the case in the Southern Hemisphere, as Earth’s South Pole will be pointing towards the sun, thus the Southern Hemisphere will have its longest day.

    File:Earth-lighting-winter-solstice EN.png

After Dec 21, the nights will again start becoming shorter because the sun spends more time on the horizon until March 20 when there will be the same length of day and night because the axis of the Earth will be vertical.

Again, the days will continue to grow longer through to the summer, and on June 21, we’ll experience the longest day of the year.

  • Justine Sacco: Yet Another Immature, Stupid, Racist Tweet

Justine Sacco’s tweet on Friday was not just racist, but sadly very immature for someone who is supposed to be a “public relations professional”.

Sacco is PR director of corporate communication for IAC.  She sparked outrage in the social media world after she tweeted Friday, “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!’

The chief PR officer, who represents brands like OKCupid, Vimeo, Tinder, and ironically, Blackpeoplemeet.com is said to have made the tweet from London shortly before departing to South Africa. Apparently, she was unaware of the firestorm she created while on her 12-hour flight.

By the time she landed in Cape Town, her post had been retweeted about 3000 times. She then promptly deleted her entire Twitter account, but the damage was already done. Her employer later issued a statement that blasted her tweet as “outrageous” and “offensive”.

“This is an outrageous, offensive comment that does not reflect the views and values of IAC,” read the statement.  IAC, which is owned by Media tycoon Barry Diller, also said it had been unable to reach Sacco, “Unfortunately, the employee in question is unreachable on an international flight, but this is a very serious matter and we are taking appropriate action.”

One bitter Twitter user went as far as creating a domain name, justinesacco.com that links a coalition of charities that assist Sub-Saharan Africa.

Sacco is most likely to receive a hostile landing and stay in Africa. Her arrival in Africa was anticipated shortly after the tweet went viral, and made the #HasJustineLandedYet hashtag a popular trending topic.  One twitter user, @Zac_ R said he went to the airport just to see who Sacco was and take photos of her. Twitter user John Becker wrote in response: “’Are you even real?!? This is utterly ghastly on so many levels.”

This is not the first time Justine Sacco has made offensive tweets, thus removing the likelihood that her Twitter account was hacked.  In January 2013, she tweeted: “I can’t be fired for things I say while intoxicated right?”

You most certainly can: This tweet Sacco wrote in January may have been a self fulfilling prophecy

Another tweet she posted in February 2012 read: “I had a sex dream about an autistic kid last night.”

  • Canada Prostitution: Supreme Court Removes Restrictions On Sex Trade

Sex workers in Canada are celebrating after the country’s highest court unanimously struck down three anti-prostitution laws. In their landmark 9-0 ruling, the nine judges deemed that bans against owning and visiting brothels, publicly soliciting for sex and living off prostitution proceeds constitute gross violation to the principles of life, liberty and security of sex workers.

Prostitution is legal in Canada but laws aimed at curbing its practice went overboard in as far as protecting the public from nuisances associated with prostitution is concerned, the judges noted. “Parliament has the power to regulate against nuisances, but not at the cost of the health, safety and lives of prostitutes,” Read part of the ruling.

However, the ruling doesn’t take effect immediately as Canada’s parliament has one year to create appropriate legislation. This decision by the Supreme Court upheld an earlier ruling by the Court of Appeal that struck down the law against owning and visiting brothels on the grounds that this forced sex workers into the streets.

The last time the Supreme court ruled on matters of anti-prostitution laws was more than two decades ago when it upheld the law against street solicitation. Chief Justice Beverly McLachlin said times have changed since the 1990 ruling.

“The harms identified by the courts below are grossly disproportionate to the deterrence of community disruption that is the object of the law,” the chief justice noted.

The sex workers from Vancouver who were part of the group that brought the case before courts applauded the decision, through their lawyer Katrina Pacey,  terming the ruling as “unbelievably important” for sex workers and human rights.

“The court recognized that sex workers have the right to protect themselves and their safety,” she said.

  • $140 Picasso? Man Wins Million-Dollar Drawing In Raffle

A $140 Picasso? That’s right. A man from Wexford, PA. is “still in shock”  after winning an international raffle for a million-dollar Picasso Wednesday, with a $140 ticket.

Jeffrey Gonano was the lucky one when his ticket, 747815 was randomly picked by a computer system on Wednesday. The ticket was among 50,000 other tickets posted for sale online at 100 euros each to raise funds needed to preserve Tyre – an ancient biblical city found in Lebanon.

Coincidentally, the 25-year-old who became interested in art only a few years ago had been looking for artwork to hang on his wall. When it turned out that the prize was famous cubist artist Pablo Picasso’s 1914 painting, “L’Homme au Gibus” (Man with Opera Hat), Gonano couldn’t hide his excitement.

“I’m still in shock. It’s still very odd,” Gonano said. “I never thought I would win. I just saw a news article on Yahoo and bought a ticket. I don’t even know why.”

His girlfriend, Gloria Spataro said that her fiancée had been looking for pieces of art for his house. Although the new acquisition can easily make Gonano rich, he has vowed not to sell the painting, at least not yet. According to NBC News, the organization had spent a fortune to purchase the drawing from a New York gallery with the help of a bank loan.

However, the Picasso winner has decided that he will not hang the painting in his home. “It’s too expensive to put on my wall,” said Gonano. One of his plans is to lend it to a museum so that other people can enjoy it as well.

The event attracted buyers from Germany, France, Kyrgyzstan, America and Iran. The grandson of the artwork’s creator, Oliver Picasso said his grandfather would have been thrilled that his drawing was being used for a good cause had he been alive.

“My grandfather was a pioneer in everything, in his love life, in his artwork, so tonight I’m sure he would have helped the cause,” he said.

  • ‘The Walking Dead’ Creator Frank Darabont Is Suing AMC

Frank Darabont, the creator of ‘The Walking Dead’ has sued AMC for supposedly trying to cheat him out of tens of millions of dollars in profits from the hit zombie series.

“Despite four seasons of unprecedented programming success and profitability for defendants, Darabont has not received and may never receive one dollar in profits for developing the series,” the suit said.

Darabont is a well known Oscar-nominated screenwriter and film director,  famous for his work in The Shawshank Redemption (1994) and The Green Mile (1999). He worked for several years to develop and write ‘The Walking Dead’ TV series based on Robert Kirkman’s comic book about zombies. Darabont now believes that his licensing agreement with AMC was a sham that aimed at making profit for the parent company while denying its participants their rightful share. In the suit, Darabont also complains that AMC fired him without cause during the second season in order to dodge renegotiating his deal.

AMC did not immediately respond to the suit which also alleges that AMC decided to develop the series in-house and awarded itself a low airing license fee thus engaging  in “self-dealing”.

Darabont’s complaint says that the licensing fee is being manipulated because the broadcasting company and the licensing company are one in the same – AMC. “For instance, the ‘Mad Men’ licensing company gets $3 million from AMC per episode whereas AMC pays just $1.45 million to itself  per ‘Walking Dead’ episode. According to the lawsuit, ‘Mad Men’ only draws about 25% the number of viewers that ‘The Walking Dead’ does.

As of December 2012, AMC’s statements showed that “The Walking Dead” had to overcome $49 million deficit before its creator could see the first dollar. Darabont now accuses AMC of manipulating the figures so that the “plaintiffs never see that first dollar.”

The suit says that the company claims a $55 million deficit after a production cost totaled $104.5 million and AMC paid itself $49 million dollars in license fees. Therefore, as long as AMC continues to run a deficit the plaintiffs won’t get paid.

  • Ronnie Biggs, British Train Robber, Dead At 84

One of Britain’s most notorious criminals Ronnie Biggs– infamous for the 1963 Great Train Robbery–has died at the age of 84. His publisher, Cliff Moulder told CNN that friends and family informed him that Biggs died Wednesday morning.

Biggs made headlines when he took part in The Great Train Robbery and escaped with £2.6m from a Glasgow train on Aug 8, 1963. He was one of 14 professional criminals who robbed the train that day. The Great Train Robbery had transformed Biggs from a petty street thief to one of the most wanted criminals in Britain making him the subject of many films, books and TV shows. Among the most recent books about Biggs include: The Great Train Robbery — 50th Anniversary Special and the Odd Man Out: The Last Straw.

Biggs was sentenced to 30 years in prison but escaped in 1965 after serving just 15 months. He spent the next 36 years of his life on the run from the law in countries like France, Australia and Brazil. He was later sent back to prison in 2001 when he returned to the UK to seek medical attention. However, he was released  in 2009 after contracting pneumonia.

News of Biggs’ death spread quickly with many people recalling their personal and business interactions with him. One notable thing about Biggs is the folk hero status he acquired for his crime. Many people seemed to forget that he hurt people in the train robbery. Train conductor Jack Mills was struck over the head with an iron rod by Biggs’ gang. Seven years later he died. Some have attributed Mills’ death to the injuries he sustained during the robbery.

A Twitter account that markets his books said: “Sadly we lost Ron during the night. As always, his timing was perfect to the end. Keep him and his family in your thoughts.”

Biggs is said to have died after a series of strokes. The last time he was seen in public was in March while attending the funeral of his fellow Great Train Bandit, Bruce Reynolds. Before his demise, he was being treated at the Carlton Court Care Home in North London.

  • Tessanne Chin: Season 5 Winner Of “The Voice”

Tessanne Chin couldn’t be happier after winning the 5th season of NBC’s “The Voice” in Tuesday night’s live two-hour finale. Chin, a 28-year-old member of coach Adam Levine’s team and former singer for legendary reggae artist Jimmy Cliff, also wins a recording contract. ‘A better coach for me I could not find,’ Tessanne told coach Adam moments before the win.

    http://youtu.be/gHKPV9eMs-E

The runner up was 16-year-old Jacquie Lee from coach Christina Aguilera’s team while Will Champlin finished third. Champlin was a member of coach Adam Levine’s team as well and his dad was a Chicago band member.

For Tessanne, the win means the Jamaican native will finally realize her dream of becoming an international singer. According to Tessanne, she did not expect to win especially after she almost gave up on her dream of becoming a singer before trying out for the competition.  “I feel like, is this really happening, you know? This can’t be real. Like unbelievable. Unbelievable.” she said. “I was literally at the end of a road, you know, and coming to a place in my life where I was like, am I going to keep doing this and feeling like I’m not getting anywhere? Or am I going to give this another shot? And thank God, thank God I was able to give it another shot.”

It appeared as though no one was more proud than her couch Adam Levine, who now adds a second win to his record on the show. Adam said he had to change tactics in order to win this time. His new approach was to downsize  his other commitments so that he could devote more time to building his team’s confidence.

The evening was also graced by performances from Lady Gaga who performed “Do What U Want” and Celine Dion who sung “Incredible” from her latest Album “Loved Me Back to Life.”

  • Reno Shooting: Gunman Kills 2 At Renown Medical Center

Reno Police have confirmed two people dead on Tuesday, after several shots were fired at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, NV.

According to Department Deputy Chief  Tom Robinson, one of the deceased was the shooter, who succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Two other people were wounded and are now listed as being in critical condition at the facility. The authorities have not confirmed the motive for the shooting, but they do not believe it was a random act.

According to CNN News, the shooter barged into the building with at least one firearm at around 2:45 p.m and began shooting. At around 3 pm he reportedly shot himself to death. One of the victims injured is reported to be a doctor at the facility. However, the other victims have yet to be identified. Reno police spokesperson Angela Rambo said the shooting occurred in the Center for Advanced Medicine B.

Doranda Cone, a facility resident, was one of the eyewitnesses to the incident. She said she was on her way to see the doctor when the shooter began his attack. “I saw this woman with blood all over her being rushed past me to the ER,” Cone said.

According to Kat Raco, an ophthalmic technician, he heard at least two large bangs and sound of people running on the building’s third floor. Those present said the police were quick and professional in handling the situation as they ordered people in the building to lock the doors to prevent anyone else from coming in. Officials say most of the medical staff were busy seeing patients when the shooting occurred.

“The police handled it in the best way possible,” a police spokeswoman said. The building doesn’t have armed guards.

  • Adrien Broner Gets Beaten By Marcos Maidana [VIDEO]

Marcos Maidana proved to be the answer to Adrien “The Problem” Broner on Saturday. The two boxers put on a spectacular fight that took place in front of a crowd of over 11, 000 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The Argentine slugger knocked down the heavily favored Broner twice to take the WBA welterweight belt on Saturday evening. This came as a shock to the boxing world because Broner had never lost before.

Maidana was dominant from the start, out-boxing Broner throughout most of the fight. In the second round he delivered a crushing blow that left his opponent staggering on the canvas. Broner barely survived the round.

Maidana gave a great performance that lead to a unanimous decision of 116-109, 117-109 and 115-110 in his favor. The crowd burst into a frenzy after the scores were announced because it was an highly unexpected outcome.

Broner quickly exited the ring after the decision. This was his first loss of his professional boxing career and he was clearly not happy about it.

Broner did have his moments though, and did seem to have the upper hand at some points in the fight. A point was also taken away from Maidana after he head butted Broner during the fight. However, Maidana meant business on Saturday night. He threw a total of 964 punches. He out-boxed Broner, landing 231 power shots to Broner’s 122.

Maidana has been known to give up in some of his previous fights. This time, however,  he never seemed to tire and kept on profusely lashing out punches, throwing powerful shots and hard jabs throughout the match.

“The truth is, I’ve never fought anyone like (Broner), and it was a great fight,” said Maidana. “The plan was to fight any way I could do it, and I won because of that.”

Fans threw bottles and cups at the three time champion when he left the ring hurriedly without talking. At the post match press conference, Broner said he was not too worried he had lost. In fact, he said he was going to celebrate like someone who had won. After all he is still the three time champion.

As for Maidana, he may next have to duke it out with Keith Thurman, another fighter who has never lost a match.

  • Cody Walker May Finish Movie In Place of Late Brother, Paul Walker

The kid brother to the “Fast & Furious 7” star Paul Walker has been asked to step in for his late brother in the final stages of the movie, according to rumors.  The 25-year-old Cody Walker, bares a close resemblance to his brother Paul (the reason why he was given the offer) but is yet to make his decision whether to accept the offer or not. Various media outlets are reporting that Cody has already agreed to the role.

Paul Walker died two weeks ago in a car crash while shooting of the movie “Fast & Furious 7” took a break. He was 40-years-old when he died.  This prompted Universal Pictures to stop production of the movie indefinitely. If Cody Walker accepts the supposed offer, it means that the film will eventually be completed. However, it is not known whether the producers are still targeting July 11, 2014 as the release date.

A source close to the production team said Cody looks like a younger version of his deceased brother. The two have similar hair color and facial characteristics. If Cody agrees, it would help them finish the movie despite Paul’s death. It would also make for a good tribute to the deceased actor.

Cody, who lives in Oregon, has previously worked in the motion picture industry as a stuntman. Universal Pictures has not made any specific comments about Paul Walker’s possible replacement but say that they are committed to providing support to Walker’s family and the “Fast & Furious” cast.

  • Gay Teacher’s Firing By Catholic School Sparks Protest

A Roman Catholic school has come under fire this week for firing a well-liked teacher who publicly announced he is gay.

Thousands have protested the move by Holy Ghost Preparatory School’s administration through petitions and Facebook groups. The protesters include: school alumni, parents and former teachers. Some of the protesters have even threatened to withdraw their financial support to the school unless the teacher is reinstated.

Michael Griffin, the teacher, was fired after telling school administrators that he was planning to marry his same sex partner.

A letter signed by 100 alums, parents and former staff said that Griffin should not have been punished for his lifestyle; instead, he should have been congratulated for his upcoming marriage.

However, there are those who say Griffin was fully aware of the school’s terms of employment at the time of joining the school. Some in the community argue that he should have known he was jeopardizing his career by opting to marry a same-sex partner while still employed at the school.

The trouble started last week with an email Griffin sent to the school’s principal. Griffin’s email announced that he would be late for a staff meeting because he was getting a marriage certificate. Had Griffin not sent that email he may still have had his job today. According to Griffin, everyone in the school knew about the relationship but the email forced the decision.

Same-sex marriages are not allowed in Catholic teachings. A statement from the school stated “All of us, including Mr. Griffin, understood that his decision would place him in violation of his contract.”

Thus, the school is arguing its case based on its contractual agreement with Griffin. This position has received support from people like Rita Schwartz, leader of a local teachers union, who said that teachers at Catholic schools are expected to adhere to church morals.

“When you sign on to work in a Catholic school … there are certain things that you can’t do,” she said.

Given the uproar the incident has caused, it will be interesting to see whether or not the school changes its decision in the coming weeks.

  • John Kerry: North Korea’s Leader Is Reckless And Ruthless

U.S. Secretary of  State John Kerry has described North Korean dictator, Kim Jong Un, 30, as reckless and insecure following the arrest and execution of the North Korean leader’s powerful uncle, Jang Song Thaek.

Kerry said Kim’s actions were “ominous” to the country’s stability. In an exclusive interview with Martha Raddatz of ABC, Kerry said Kim’s “ruthless, horrendous dictatorship” can only be compared to Saddam Hussein.

“It really reminded me of a video that we saw of Saddam Hussein doing the same thing, having people plucked out of an audience, and people sitting there sweating, and nobody daring to move or do anything,” Kerry told ABC,  “It tells us a lot about, first of all, how ruthless and reckless he is. And it also tells us a lot about how insecure he is, to a certain degree.”

North Korea reported the execution of Jang Song Thaek on Friday. Earlier, the state had said it had stripped Thaek of his position and powers after accusing him of a number of criminal acts including financial crimes, alcohol abuse and womanizing. The Communist nation is known for its secretive politics and Thaek could have been executed because of a fall-out with the Korean leader as well as other personal reasons.

Following the execution, Kerry lamented that it was not the first time this had happened under Kim’s administration. He called for urgent attention on North Korean nuclear plans. Kerry believes that this act demonstrates that North Korea is not ready to embrace stability.

North Korea has already carried out two long-range missile tests and tested its nuclear weapons despite U.N. sanctions. The U.S. is already working with China and the U.K. to tame North Korean nuclear ambitions. Other countries that support U.N. sanctions include Russia, South Korea and Japan.

Kerry, in the interview, said having someone like Kim with “a nuclear weapon potentiality” is out-rightly dangerous and unacceptable.

  • Bruno Mars Excited To Be Billboard’s Top Artist of 2013

Bruno Mars has been named by Billboard as this year’s Artist of the Year. Bruno beat the likes of Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift and Rihanna for the top honor, thanks to his 2012 “Unorthodox Jukebox” which is the 2nd bestselling album after Timberlake’s “20/20 Experience”. To date, the album has sold about 1.8 million copies.

‘I love to create music. And that’s all I was trying to do with that album,’ said Mars. ‘I’m just happy that there’s some people out there that like it.’

Mars’ top hits this year included “When I Was Your Man”, “Locked Out of Heaven” and a top five hit, “Treasure”. These are the hits that kept him in the top 20 list every week since their release.

The 28-year-old artist could not hide his excitement after Billboard announced the news Friday that the pop crooner will be the year’s topmost artist. “It’s flattering. It’s just an honor,” Mars said in an interview. “I’m proud to be a part of this whole team that I have.”

Mars thinks that the reason fans have resonated with his music is because it is “relatable”. “You know when you eat that food and it’s filling that void you were missing,” he said of his music.

Other notable winners in the list included Justin Timberlake who topped the R&B charts, Florida Georgia Line who ruled Country and Imagine Dragon – they reigned over the Rock charts. Others include Taylor Swift who is this year’s top female artist and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis who tops the group category.

Mars had quite a steller year. His hit “Locked Out of Heaven,” has also been nominated for the Grammy’s prestigious Record and Song of the Year awards.

Nelson Mandela Buried In Hometown Of Qunu

Nelson Mandela, fondly known as Madiba, became South Africa’s first black president in 1994. He was buried on Sunday in his childhood village of Qunu in Eastern Cape province.

His burial concluded 10 days of  mourning that followed his death on Dec. 5 at the age of 95. He received a state burial characterized by a traditional ceremony and a 21-gun salute. Military helicopters also flew by the burial ceremony carrying the national flag.

“A great tree has fallen, he is now going home to rest with his forefathers,” said Ngangomhlaba Matanzima, a representative of Mandela’s family. “We thank them for lending us such an icon.” South African’s were bidding farewell to their fallen hero for the last time; a man who had brought them freedom against all odds.

Mandela’s portrait could be seen erected over a white marquee just behind a row of 95 candles representing his age at death. His casket was transported to a tent using a gun carriage, wrapped in the national flag and placed on a carpet made of cow skin.

The ceremony attracted tens of thousands of mourners including friends, relatives, heads of state, and South African citizens among others. The eyes of Graca Machel, Mandela’s widow, were covered with a handkerchief for much of the ceremony.

For those who could not access the burial ceremony venue, big screens were placed in the area to broadcast the event live, including one screen that was placed on a hill in Qunu.

Mandela’s tenacious fight for freedom from the yolks of apartheid earned him 27 years in prison. He was instrumental in helping to end South Africa’s racial segregation. Mandela died a hero and an icon of  civil rights and the struggle against apartheid.

  • China Moon Landing: Jade Rabbit Reaches Moon’s Surface

China Moon Landing: Jade Rabbit Reaches Moon’s Surface

China made history on Saturday by successfully landing its first unmanned spacecraft on the moon. The Chang’e-3  reached the moon at about 9.12 p.m Saturday and delivered “Yutu”, nicknamed “Jade Rabbit”. Yutu is a solar powered, six-wheeled robotic rover, equipped with at least four cameras and a number of  mechanical devices for sampling and analyzing the moon’s surface.

On Saturday, Zheng Yong-Chun, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced, “Chang’e-3 has been landed successfully on the surface of the moon today”. This means that China becomes only the third country to achieve such a feat after the United States last landed in 1972, and the former Soviet Union in 1976.

The 1-ton rover will explore the moon’s surface, studying soil samples and rocks for at least three months. The Yutu moon rover is named after a pet rabbit that journeyed to the moon with the Chinese mythological goddess named Chang’e .

The lander drifted about 100 meters in altitude above the lunar landscape as it searched for a safe landing spot. The spacecraft eventually landed in the Sinus Iridum (known as the Bay of Rainbows) located on the northern hemisphere of the moon.

The lander also features a scientific gear that can observe the Earth and other celestial objects over the next 12 months. China is also expected to open a permanent space station in the Earth’s orbit, within the next decade.
