  • Tim Wilson Passes Away At 52 From Heart Attack

Famed comedian Tim Wilson died of a heart attack on Wednesday, just four days after giving his last performance. He was 52 years old.

According to his manager Chris DiPetta, the stand-up comic and country music artist performed at a gig in Bay City, Michigan after which he traveled to his hometown of Columbus, Georgia to visit his brother. Wilson was set to perform in multiple shows for the upcoming weekend at the comedy club The Stardome in Birmingham, Alabama.

The comedian was rushed to the hospital by his brother after Wilson complained of shortness of breath. It was at the hospital that Wilson suffered a massive heart attack, to which he succumbed at 9:15 p.m.

Timothy Collins “Tim” Wilson was best known for his distinctive style of comedy, which he infused with original country songs such as Garth Brooks Ruined My Life and Jeff Gordon’s Gay. He has also been a recurring figure on the American radio program “The Bob and Tom Show” since 1995.

DiPetta, who has also managed comic great Steve Harvey and “Mike and Molly” star Billy Gardell, said that Wilson was a well-loved fellow who had a flair for telling stories through his music and comedic characters. Apart from stand-up, Wilson also recorded more than a dozen records and appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Wilson also wrote a book with author Roger C Keiss entitled, “Happy New Year – Ted”, which discusses Keiss’ theory about serial killings that took place in the 1970s.

Several friends in the comedy community have tweeted their condolences to Wilson’s friends and family. The FOX-syndicated radio program The John Boy and Billy Big Show paid Wilson a tribute by posting montage of memories on their website.

Wilson is survived by his wife Deidre, 24-year-old daughter, and 15-year-old son. DiPetta announced that the comedian’s funeral services will be held this weekend in his hometown.

  • Detox Diets: Before You Do It, Read This

Detox Diets: Before You Do It, Read This

Detoxification is something that the body does naturally to get rid of or keep toxins in check. The human body is exposed to different toxins every day, from the food we eat, the liquids we guzzle, and even the environment, such as fungus-contaminated buildings. Toxins are also the by-product of the body’s normal cellular activities, and many of the body’s organs function to turn toxins into less harmful compounds and excrete these from the body.

     What is a Detox Diet?

To help the body along, people engage in a detox diet. This type of diet is intended to be done for only a short period, because prolonging it more than necessary may result in deficiencies in the necessary nutrients the body needs, such as calcium and protein. Going on a detox requires dieters to fast and refrain from eating certain types of food, such as processed meat and those containing artificial flavors. Instead, dieters eat organic food rich in antioxidants and vitamins needed by the body for its natural detoxification process. High-fiber food and plenty of water are recommended as well, to help in eliminating toxins through excretion.

Is Going on a Detox Diet Necessary?

The idea behind going on a detox diet sounds good, but the detoxifying effects are not scientifically proven. A detox diet by itself is harmless unless it results in nutrient deficiency, but there is little evidence that it actually eliminates toxins from the body. As mentioned, the body—in particular, the liver and kidneys—naturally works to kick the toxins from its system. Going on a detox diet is not necessary, but it can be beneficial, considering that dieters would be avoiding highly processed food containing added sugar and preservatives.

What Can I Get from a Detox Diet?

Those who have tried going on a detox diet reported feeling more energetic and focused after the dieting period. Clearer skin, improved digestion, and regular bowel movement also result from eating organic, high-fiber, and vitamin-rich food. People should be careful not to overdo it, however, as there are also possible side effects to limiting the diet to certain foods. Fasting, the first stage of a detox diet, can result in fatigue, constipation, and dehydration. It can also lead to nutritional deficiencies and would make it more difficult for the body to heal itself. This type of diet is certainly not for everyone, especially children and pregnant or lactating women.

What if I Want to Try Out a Detox Diet?

As with any pursuit in the name of fitness, it’s best to consult your doctor first before embarking on a diet. A detox diet is not a be-all and end-all solution to getting rid of toxins—keeping the body’s organs in proper working order is. So, be sure to discuss a diet plan with your doctor that will help you keep fit without depriving yourself of the nutrients your body needs.

  • Tim Tebow’s Phone Call To Ohio State Recruit Violates NCAA Rules

Secondary violations are commonly self-reported by many schools in BCS conferences yearly. However, it is rare that the violation involves a former Heisman Trophy winner.

Tim Tebow, former NFL quarterback who played for the New York Jets and the Denver Broncos, has reportedly committed a secondary violation in 2013. The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner was on an 8-second conversation with Clifton Garrett, one of the prospects for the Buckeyes who eventually went with LSU.

According to NCAA rules, former college football players are prohibited from having any type of contact with recruits.

On March 2013, Garrett phoned Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer. Meyer was out eating lunch with his family and Tebow. When Garrett learned that the coach was with Tebow, he asked if he could talk to him so that he could wish him good luck for the upcoming season. Tebow was able to talk to Garrett for about 8 seconds before the call was ended.

Garrett even tweeted about calling the coach and getting the chance to talk to Tim Tebow.

The 8-second call was enough to be a violation.

Meyer said that there was no talk about recruiting and that Ohio State did not instruct Tebow to recruit Garrett in behalf of the school. The coach also admitted that the conversation between the two was an error that he made, but there was no intention of using Tebow to recruit Garrett.

There have been other reported incidents of secondary violations involving phones, but some of these were the result of pocket dialing. In 2012 to 2013, Ohio State has discovered about seven calls that came from assistant coaches. The calls were about a minute long and the assistant coaches were unaware that the calls happened. The Compliance Office then cross-referenced phone bills against information from recruiting software to flag the calls. They found no evidence of attempts to recruit players.

  • Aaron Hernandez: Former NFL Star Involved In Jail Fight

Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez, 24, may face more charges due to an altercation he had with an inmate on Tuesday at the county jail in Bristol.

Hernandez is held on weapons and murder charges for Odin Lloyd’s death. Prosecutors also said that he is one of the suspects in a drive-by shooting resulting in two deaths, which happened in 2012. The former football star has pleaded not guilty for the murder charge and is awaiting trial.

According to Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson, an investigation will be conducted on how the two men encountered each other. Hernandez is housed in segregation since he is considered a high-profile inmate. In the unit where he stays, only one inmate is allowed to be out at a time. They will also be studying security videos and doing interviews to know how and why the incident happened. Both Hernandez and the unnamed inmate did not sustain serious injuries.

The brawl was over in just about a minute, as three guards were there to stop the fight. After the investigation, authorities will be deciding if there will be criminal charges or disciplinary action against the two.

Reports say that Hernandez is not allowed to have any kind of contact with other inmates even during mealtime or when doing recreational activities. Hodgson also stated that they will be looking into the possibility of a systematic failure on the jail’s procedures or a bad judgment from a staff member that allowed the two men to get in contact. Authorities also said that they have no evidence of the two men having any relationship in the jail or anywhere else.

Hernandez and the other inmate have since been moved to different jail units until all investigations on the matter have been completed.

There was no comment from Hernandez’s lawyer.

  • Barry Switzer Calls Johnny Manziel Arrogant

Johnny Manziel, also called “Johnny Football”, has been one of college football’s top figures for a couple of years now. His name causes debate and people either love him or hate him.

Legendary coach Barry Switzer is not a big fan of Manziel as evidenced in his CBS Sports Radio interview on Wednesday morning. The former coach said that Manziel is arrogant and that he does not like his antics. He went on saying that the football player is a privileged kid who has embarrassed his team and coach.

Switzer may be referring to several instances where Manziel’s name came up in headlines. Last year, the football star got a half-game suspension for allegedly taking money for autographs. There were also several news articles on how Manziel spends his time partying and going to casinos when off the field.

After bashing Manziel, Switzer was quick to say that Manziel is the best quarterback in college football he has seen in a really long time. He also said that Manziel has been putting up astounding numbers one game after another with his strong arm, quick moves, and elusiveness in the field. Switzer has also praised the football player’s performance against stiff competition. He finished his statement by saying that Manziel is the most dynamic and dominant quarterback in college football he has ever seen.

Johnny Football has had a polarizing presence in collegiate football. He is full of talent on the field, but has had some issues off field, which have been raising questions regarding his maturity.

With the 2014 NFL draft just a few months away, people are sure to voice out their opinions on the prospect players and this may be the time for Manziel to get on the good side of critics both on and off the field. Ultimately, however, what matters is whether or not his game is worthy of the NFL.

  • Texas Gay Marriage: Federal Judge Strikes Down Ban

On Wednesday, Judge Orlando Garcia struck down the ban on gay marriage in Texas. The judge went on to say that he did not do it to defy the people of Texas, but to comply with the U.S. constitution.

The decision was an answer to a suit filed by gay couples that challenged the constitutional amendment of Texas regarding banning gay marriage. Voting was done in 2005 and the results showed that 76% agreed to ban gay marriage in the state.

Garcia said that he carefully thought about his decision and that the ban goes against the country’s constitution on due process and equal protection. The current law in Texas prohibits gay couples to marry, thus demeaning them for no legitimate governmental purpose.

The judge’s ruling will not be in effect immediately. It means that gay couples in Texas cannot get married while the case is still in appeal.

Gilberto Hinojosa, Texas’ Democratic Party chairman, said that the ruling is a big step for the state’s LGBT community. He also stated that gay couples just want to have responsibilities and benefits that married couples have.

One of the four plaintiffs who brought the lawsuit forward, Victor Holmes, also rejoiced with judge’s decision with a fist pump and a “Woo hoo!” Holmes and his partner Mark Phariss are veterans of the U.S. Air Force. They are happy about the decision Garcia has made and take it as a first step towards the possibility of getting married.

On the other side, those who are opposed to gay marriage will still be fighting for what they believe in. Greg Abbott, Texas Attorney General, said that they would be challenging the ruling, as the U.S. Supreme Court has stated that each state has the authority to define marriage and that the state’s constitution dictates that marriage is an act between a man and woman.

The decision to ban gay marriage in Texas may ultimately be up to the Supreme Court.

  • Arizona Governor Jan Brewer Vetoes Controversial SB 1062

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer declared on Wednesday that she had rejected the bill that would have denied gays service from businesses based on religious beliefs. In her announcement during a news conference, she said that non-discrimination is a core value in America and Arizona, the same way religious liberty is.

Brewer stated that the bill does not address a present concern regarding religious liberty, and that she knows of no instance when an Arizona business owner’s liberty was violated because of religious beliefs. Brewer believes that the proposed law may create more problems than it claims to solve.

The proposed law—Senate Bill 1062—was worded in such a way that it could have a negative and unintended effect, according to Brewer. The bill was also an unnecessary legislation that could very well threaten Arizona’s recovering economy, because it could drive away businesses who are interested in moving to the state. High-profile events, such as the 2015 Super Bowl, may be shunned if she approved of the controversial bill.

If it had been signed into law, it would have provided businesses facing discrimination lawsuits a legal defense: that they had acted upon a sincerely-held religious belief.

The bill was proposed by the Center for Arizona Policy, a conservative advocacy group, and the Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian-based legal organization. Cathi Herrod, Center for Arizona Policy president, expressed disappointment, saying the bill was nothing more than an assurance that policies will not force people to violate their faith.

There had been a furor over the bill, with hundreds of protesters including the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee urging Brewer to veto it. Among the officials who recommended the veto are Secretary of State John Kerry, Senators Jeff Flake and John McCain, and 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

McCain spoke well of Brewer’s decision to veto the bill. He said that he hopes the move assures the Americans that “everyone is welcome” to live and work in Arizona.

  • Missouri Execution: Michael Taylor Is Dead

Missouri Execution: Michael Taylor Is Dead

Missouri inmate Michael Taylor, 47, was executed on Wednesday for the abduction, rape, and death of 15-year-old Ann Harrison in 1989.

Harrison was in her own driveway carrying a purse, flute, and her school books when she was abducted by Taylor, and another man named Roderick Nunley. The two men forced Harrison into a car that they had stolen the night before and took her to their home, raped her, and then stabbed her to death. Both men were in their 20s when the crime happened.

The two men dumped the stolen vehicle in a neighboring community with Harrison’s body inside the trunk. The vehicle was found the following day, but the crime remained unsolved for half a year. A $10,000 reward for any leads regarding the case led to a tip and the two men were eventually captured. Both Taylor and Nunley plead guilty to the crime.

There were appeals from Taylor’s attorneys who stated that the drug to be used for execution might cause suffering and pain for Taylor. The drug was purchased from a different supplier after the Oklahoma-based pharmacy Apothecary Shoppe stated that they would not be providing pentobarbital for the execution.

Missouri has been using the three-drug execution process for a long time, but switched to using pentobarbital last year. There have already been three executions using the said drug. According to state officials one of the inmates showed signs of distress when pentobarbital was administered.

Appeals from Taylor’s attorneys were refused and the execution pushed through.

According to reports, Taylor had written a letter to Harrison’s parents expressing his remorse and apologies for the crime he committed. He also said that he hopes they accept the letter.

Taylor was pronounced dead at 12:10 a.m. He had no final statement. Members from both the Harrison and Taylor families were there to witness the execution.

Taylor’s accomplice, Nunley, is also up for execution but a date has not yet been set.

  • Lisa Kudrow: Court Orders Actress To Pay $1.6M To Former Manager

Former Friends star Lisa Kudrow lost a legal battle with her former manager, Scott Howard. On Tuesday, a California jury returned its verdict in a civil lawsuit filed by Howard against the actress in 2008.

Howard, who was Kudrow’s manager for 16 years starting in 1991, claimed that the Web Therapy star made a breach of contract when she failed to pay him an agreed percentage of her earnings on the immensely popular NBC sitcom, as well as other projects. During the court hearing, Howard declared that he and Kudrow made an oral agreement when he started managing her acting career, stating that he was entitled to 10% of the entire income she earned during their partnership.

After Howard and Kudrow parted ways in 2007, the actress allegedly stopped paying him residuals from the earnings she has been receiving from Friends reruns and merchandising. Howard’s lawyer Mark Baute said that his client’s cut amounted to more than $500,000.

Kudrow’s lawyer Gerald Sauer spoke on her behalf and said that they are going to appeal the decision to the higher court. In the mean time, the verdict orders Kudrow to pay Howard $16,000 a month in addition to the 10% she owes him while the appeal is pending.

Kudrow’s camp insisted that she was no longer responsible to pay Howard after they decided to end their business relationship because his position was only that of a manager and not an agent.

The 50-year-old actress started off as one of the lowest-paid cast members when she joined Friends in 1994. She initially earned just $13,500 per episode, but her fee skyrocketed to more than $1 million per episode during the final season in 2004. Kudrow has also starred in numerous films such as Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion and The Opposite of Sex. She currently stars in the improv comedy web series Web Therapy, which she also produces.

  • Godzilla Roars And Bryan Cranston Panics In New Movie Trailer

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Godzilla in which fans get to hear the monstrous roar and see Bryan Cranston freak out.

The movie’s second trailer debuted online on Tuesday, and shows why “Godzilla” is synonymous with destruction and mayhem. The trailer gives viewers sweeping shots of the smoldering city, a skyline covered in smoke, falling sky jumpers, a gargantuan rising tide, and people running for their lives.

The highlight of the trailer is Cranston, as scientist Joe Brody, shaking and seething amidst the widespread destruction. “It wasn’t an earthquake…What’s really happening is that you’re hiding something out there,” he accuses the government, “and it’s going to send us back to  the Stone Age!”

What did the government do now, and what are they hiding?

The trailer reveals that in 1954, the same year as the original Japanese movie, the nuclear tests being conducted by the United States military in the Pacific were not tests at all. They were actually trying to kill the monster, to no avail. The nuclear blasts just served to annoy the beast instead of inflicting damage.

It appears that the people were being told that the recent rumblings and catastrophes were caused by a typhoon, or probably an earthquake, or some other natural disaster. Brody, of course, had the gut feel that it wasn’t so, with the state of devastation he’d seen. Thus Brody’s panicked outburst.

And how could he not, when Godzilla looks to be stronger and more impenetrable than ever? Ken Watanabe, who plays a Japanese scientist, gravely says that man’s arrogance is in thinking that nature is within our control, “And not the other way around.”

Director Gareth Edwards shows viewers glimpses of the monster of all monsters, but is careful not to show Godzilla’s whole body yet. Fans will have to wait until the movie is released on May 16, but for now everyone can see Godzilla’s spiky reptilian back and his chops, bared in a horrific roar.

  • Rick Warren Works On Mental Health Ministry In Memory Of Son’s Suicide

Rick Warren Works On Mental Health Ministry In Memory Of Son’s Suicide

Pastor Rick Warren, author of best-selling book The Purpose Driven Life, is working on a new ministry a year after his son’s death.

Matthew Warren, Pastor Warren’s 27-year-old son, committed suicide by shooting himself last year. He had been struggling with suicidal thoughts and depression for several years.

Warren said that he was not going to waste the pain he felt over the death of his son. He believes that most of the time, a great ministry results from the deepest pain. Warren wrote on his journal to cope with his son’s death, and one of the things he wrote was “in God’s garden of grace even broken trees bear fruit.”

After his son’s death, Warren and his wife Kay received thousands of letters and messages from people sharing their own experiences and struggles with various kinds of mental illness. The pastor, founder of Saddleback Church, will work on the ministry together with the National Alliance of Mental Illness and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange to spread awareness on the subject.

About 12 years ago, Warren and his wife also began ministering about HIV and AIDS. Warren says that he thought that was the biggest taboo topic, but now he thinks that mental illness is one of the issues that people must be aware of.

The conference will open talks on a wide range of mental illnesses including anxiety, bipolar disorder, addiction, and eating disorders, among others. There will also be 20 interactive workshops throughout the conference that are available to all attendees. The conference’s main goal is to provide churches the resources they need in order to aid churchgoers or their relatives and friends who are dealing with a mental illness.

The Gathering on Mental Health and the Church will be held on March 28 at Saddleback.

  • Ian Cuttler Sala: Art Director Killed in Car Crash

Ian Cuttler Sala was the passenger in a car being driven by Sami Hayek, actress Salma Hayek’s brother, when it collided with a pickup truck in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles on Sunday. This was confirmed by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office on Tuesday.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the 40-year-old Hayek was driving a two-seater 2006 Ford GT sports coupe on the eastbound lane of Sunset Boulevard shortly before 5 in the afternoon when he lost control of the car. The car swerved into the westbound lane into the path of incoming cars, ultimately crashing into a white 2011 Toyota Tacoma. The passenger side of the coupe received the greatest force of impact.

It is unknown how fast the car was going when it collided head-on with the pickup truck, but the luxury model is known to reach a top speed of 205 mph.

Sala, 43, suffered major blunt force trauma and died at the scene, but investigators have yet to pinpoint the exact cause of death. Hayek suffered a laceration to the head and several broken ribs. Alvin Gomez, 20, was the driver of the pickup. He was in pain and suffered a broken foot. Hayek and Gomez were transported to Westwood’s Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

Sala was a New York-based photographer and art director, and is known for his work on the Johnny Cash: The Legend box set, for which he won a Grammy Award in 2006. He had also been nominated for best art direction for his work on Louis Armstrong: The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings.

Sala had been living in Manhattan since 1996. He previously worked at Sony Music, creating marketing visuals for various musical artists including Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Julio Iglesias, Destiny’s Child, Marc Anthony, Billy Joel, and Ricky Martin. After his stint with Sony, he focused on commercial photography.

  • Seth Meyers: ‘Late Show’ Debut Review

If you are a fan of Seth Meyers on Saturday Night Live, you most likely enjoyed his debut on Late Night.

Meyers replaced Jimmy Fallon on Late Night. Fallon had a great run as the Late Night host with popular segments such as The History of Rap and Slow-jamming the News. He made his debut appearance as The Tonight Show’s host on February 17 with guests Will Smith and U2, as well as appearances from Robert De Niro, Kim Kardashian, Seth Rogen, Lady Gaga, and Stephen Colbert.

Meyers’ first appearance as the host of Late Night garnered mixed reviews from audiences. He was able to transition his SNL persona to the talk show format smoothly, but based on some reviews, he still has to learn the ropes of delivering monologues. However, he did a good job “talking.” According to The Los Angeles Times, Meyers’ monologue was similar in style to his headline segment, Weekend Update.

The debut show’s guests were Meyers’ friend Amy Poehler, another SNL alum, and Vice President Joe Biden. Poehler and Meyers were amusing to watch as they targeted insults at each other. Vice President Biden was also a delight, as he seemed comfortable, most likely because of Poehler’s presence. Poehler has already worked with the Vice President when she asked him to do a cameo on her show Parks and Recreation. The show was capped off with a musical performance by A Great Big World.

Darren Franich from Entertainment Weekly also gave his opinion on the show, giving it a “B.” He said that he laughed more with Fallon’s The Tonight Show, but laughed at Meyers’ more than he did at Fallon.

Just like other late night hosts, Meyers will be flying solo but has the support of friends. Fred Armisen, also a SNL alum, in leading the Late Night band. Armisen’s humor meshes well with Meyers’, probably because of their years together in SNL. Overall, critics say that Meyers’ had a good Late Night Debut.

  • Jan Brewer: Arizona Gov. To Make Decision On Anti-Gay Bill

To veto or not to veto? That is the question for Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, who is facing a big decision on a controversial issue.

The Arizona Legislature has recently passed a bill that would allow business owners to turn away service to lesbian and gay customers, as long as they hold deep religious beliefs to do so. If passed, the law would give a person, church, or business reason to defend themselves against discrimination claims. There is strong opposition against the bill becoming the law of the land.

The bill has caused a major uproar with senators and the business community. The latest to voice an opinion regarding the issue is Mitt Romney, who is urging Brewer to veto. Senator John McCain has also tweeted his hope for a veto.

There have been assumptions that the governor will most likely veto the bill, but there isn’t a sure sign that she will.

CNN’s Dana Bash had an exclusive interview with Brewer on Monday, addressing the different factors that she has to consider before making a decision. The governor said that she always makes it a point to listen to both sides before making a crucial decision. She also says that she is pro-business and appreciates arguments from both sides.

    http://youtu.be/YD4wPCCkmEE

According to political consultant Doug Cole, Brewer is no beginner when it comes to these types of deals. She always gives both the pro and opposing side their due, and she will be getting a detailed briefing from her legal team.

The anti-gay bill was brought to Brewer’s desk last week. She is given five days to decide whether to veto it or sign in. In the event she decides to do nothing about it, the bill will become law anyway. She will be making a decision when she comes back from Washington where she has been focused on meetings with the National Governors Association.

  • Disney World Raises Ticket Prices In 2014

Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida has once again increased its admission price, bringing the cost to $99. The $4 price hike is the second in less than a year. The first price increase was made in June 2013 when the rate went up to $95 for a day pass – a $6 increase.

Disney also says that the price hike will affect other Disney World parks including Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and Epcot. They are projecting a $4 increase, which will bring the single-day admission prices for the said parks up to $94.

Customary price increases typically happens in the early weeks of June, just as the school year is about to end. According to analysts, this year’s February price increase is reported to be based on different reasons. One of them is the big success of Frozen, which was released November last year. Another reason is reservations from East Coast residents who have been making reservations to take a break from the snow.

Robert Niles, an industry observer from Theme Park Insider, says that the unusual timing of Disney’s price hike looks as if the park’s management is daring Universal to raise their park admission to more than $100. Universal will be opening another Harry Potter-themed attraction, Diagon Alley, in their Florida park this year.

    http://youtu.be/7AJ2cUjNYs0

Moreover, several attractions will be opening its doors to the public this year. Among them are Sea Quest’s interactive aquarium, a new Madame Tussauds museum, and the Orlando Eye Ferris wheel. These attractions are sure to increase traffic in Orlando, eliminating a slump in attendance and increasing revenue for the park.

Kim Prunty, Walt Disney World’s spokesperson, said in a statement that the price increase is reflected in the quality and experiences they offer visitors in the park. She also says that visitors get a variety of ticket options that will allow them to get additional savings.

  • Gabriele Grunewald Reinstated As US 3K Champ

It’s official – Gabriele Grunewald is the US Indoor Women’s 3,000-meter champion, according to her reinstatement by USA Track and Field on Monday. Grunewald had previously won the 3K-meter run last Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico but was disqualified just hours after being proclaimed the winner.

The quick decision change followed a complaint made by Alberto Salazar, the coach of fourth-placer Jordan Hasay. Salazar alleged that Grunewald made illegal contact with Hasay on the final lap of the race. Track and field officials initially dismissed Salazar’s claim, but the coach pressed on with his protest until Grunewald was stripped of her title, which was given to second-place finisher Shannon Rowbury.

The controversial disqualification generated widespread criticism and protest throughout the track world. Several female contestants in Sunday’s 1,500-meter event locked arms after the race and started marching down the track as a symbol of their support for Grunewald.

USATF spokesperson Jill Greer said that Salazar and the rest of Hasay’s camp withdrew their protest on Monday, prompting the USATF to revoke the disqualification. CEO Max Siegel spoke with Grunewald’s and Hasay’s representatives on Monday, according to the USATF.

An entry in Hasay’s blog states that Hasay withdrew her protest despite her desire and determination to compete in Poland because she “did not want to make a national team under these circumstances”. Her coach declared in the USATF press release that his only intention was to fight for his athlete after seeing the illegal contact.

Third-place finisher Sara Vaughn expressed her admiration for Hasay’s decision to withdraw her protest. She said that Hasay handled the situation well, but that more answers should be sought with regard to the reason behind the initial disqualification.

Grunewald’s disqualification would have meant a spot for Hasay on next month’s IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland. However, Hasay announced her withdrawal from the team, thereby granting Grunewald a spot on the US team along with Rowbury.

  • Dr. Drew’s Daughter Admits To Battle With Eating Disorder

Paulina Pinsky, 21, has admitted her battle with bulimia and anorexia. Paulina is the daughter of Celebrity Rehab host, Dr. Drew, who specializes in addictions. The news broke out just in time for National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.

The revelation was done in an essay posted on the Columbia Daily Spectator website wherein Paulina wrote about her 7-year struggle with eating disorders. She said that she felt pressured by many people around her – even by her own mother – to be a perfect girl. Indeed, Paulina seemed to be the perfect girl from the outside. She was a competitive ice skater, a cheerleader, and got good grades in school. Inside, however, she was suffering from the pressure of being perfect.

Paulina also said that she told her mother that she has been throwing up since seventh grade. After a long silence, her mother finally responded with “Well, get your teeth checked.”

It came to a point when Paulina would throw up eight times in a day just to handle the stress of living at home during spring break. She said that her mother’s perfectionism was one of the causes of her low self-esteem and purging. It was then that she got scared and finally took action to recover.

Paulina is currently in her junior year at Barnard College. Just this month, she hosted the Body Positivity Week in school, which consisted of different activities, such as photo shoots, yoga sessions, and talks about eating disorders. She is a year and a half into recovery from her eating disorders and has been learning how to have a functional relationship with her mother.

According to Dr. Drew’s statement, he is proud of his daughter for having the courage to recognize that she needed help with her condition. He also recognized and praised his daughter’s actions to help others and empower women who are suffering from eating disorders.

  • Duck Commander Named New Independence Bowl Sponsor

There is no stopping the Duck Dynasty folks as they now have their own bowl game.  Duck Commander, which is the brand of duck calls owned by the Robertson family, has recently been named the new title sponsor for the Independence Bowl, according to local paper Shreveport Times.

Independence Bowl executive director Missy Setters confirmed to the Times that the Foundation has reached an agreement with Duck Commander to serve as the honored 38-year-old bowl’s sponsor for six years. Times also stated that foundation officials will be releasing an official announcement on Wednesday.

Duck Commander was established by Phil Alexander “Phil” Robertson, a former quarterback of the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and current patriarch in the hit television series,  Duck Dynasty on the A&E network. The drastic success of the show increased sales of their Duck Commander merchandise and put the spotlight on Robertson, specifically his recent remarks on religion and homosexuality.

Robertson is a professional hunter based in West Monroe, Louisiana. His family-operated business makes various duck hunting products, the most popular of which is a duck call named Duck Commander. The reality TV series “Duck Dynasty”, which depicts the lives of the Robertson clan, is currently on its fourth season. The season premiere garnered record-breaking ratings, making it the most-watched episode of a non-fiction series in the history of cable television.

Duck Commander released a statement two weeks ago about a multi-year agreement with NASCAR as the title sponsor for the Sprint Cup Series race. The event is set to be called “Duck Commander 500”.

For the next six years, the Duck Commander Independence Bowl will be in charge of pairing teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference. In the event that either league is unable to provide a representative, the Bowl will resort to back-up deals with American and Conference USA.

  • Chuck Hagel: U.S. Defense Secretary Discusses Pentagon Budget Cuts

United States Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has outlined the Pentagon’s priorities based on 2015’s defense budget. He recommends downsizing the Army to a smaller size in order to meet the budget and balance postwar defense requirements.

At present, the Army has about 522,000 soldiers on active-duty. This number is slated to shrink down to 490,000 in 2015. Hagel also suggested lowering the number to around 440,000.

With the targeted figure, the Army will be at its lowest number since after World War II. The lowest number post-World War II was recorded at 480,000 in 2001. Army chief of staff General Ray Odierno says that the ideal number is at about 450,000. He says the number poses a high risk, but it would be sufficient.

This decision is the result of Hagel’s talks with the Defense Department, and together they have decided that the country needs advanced military instead of having a larger force that is less modern. The proposed budget cut will involve reducing benefits, pay increases, and housing allowances, which is sure to stir controversy when is it brought before Congress next week.

Joint Chief Chairman General Martin Dempsey states that he believes Congress should retain the existing military benefits that the soldiers signed up for. Paul Rieckhoff, CEO and founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, also stated that cutting budgets for benefits would make it harder to draw and keep military personnel.

According to Army leaders, they have long been expecting the Army’s size to decrease since the country is preparing to end combat in Afghanistan by this year.

Defense analysts say that Pentagon budget priorities stated by Hagel would help the Army move in the right direction on several issues, such as removing wasteful spending and reforming military compensation. However, lawmakers who are running for mid-term elections to Congress might find it difficult to support the idea.

Pentagon press secretary, Rear Admiral John Kirby, says that Hagel’s proposal was done with the country’s defense strategy and the service of soldiers in mind, and the chiefs are willing to push through with tough decisions.

  • Emma Coronel: Former Beauty Queen Arrested With “El Chapo”

Joaquin Guzman, also known as “El Chapo,” was finally arrested on Saturday in Mazatlan, Mexico. The head of Sinaloa Cartel drug syndicate was captured in a condominium while he was cooking breakfast. Along with him was his wife of six years, former beauty queen Emma Coronel.

The most wanted drug lord in the world, as El Chapo is called, escaped from his Culiacan hideout through tunnels that led to Mazatlan just about a week ago.

Coronel met El Chapo at a beauty pageant back in 2007 when she was just 17 years old. El Chapo was immediately enamored by the young woman’s beauty that he used his influence in order for Coronel to win the competition. The two eventually married on Coronel’s 18th birthday. El Chapo was 47 years old.

According to sources, El Chapo was not the only connection Coronel had with the Sinaloa Cartel. She is reported to be the daughter of Ignacio Coronel, also known as Nacho, who was one of El Chapo’s right-hand men.

The arrest was carried out just after sunrise. Law enforcement personnel enclosed the 10-story condominium building. They smashed El Chapo’s door open and quickly seized the drug lord. Though there was an assault rifle right by his side, El Chapo did not attempt to reach for it. According to retired senior DEA Mike Vigil, El Chapo did not resist the arrest and seemed tired from the stress of running away from authorities.

El Chapo was taken to a maximum-security prison in Almoloya de Juarez by helicopter. The next steps after the arrest are still unclear. El Chapo will be facing a barrage of charges in Mexico with his involvement in selling methamphetamine, marijuana, heroin, and cocaine to over 50 countries. Politicians in the U.S. are also appealing the cartel leader’s extradition to the U.S. in order to face drug trafficking charges.
