  • Bill de Blasio Sworn in as NYC Mayor by Clinton

Bill de Blasio was sworn in as the 109th mayor of New York City on Wednesday on the steps of City Hall in Lower Manhattan, replacing Michael Bloomberg.

Joined by his wife, Chirlane McCray, and their two children, Dante, 16, and Chiara, 19, former President Bill Clinton administered the oath of office to de Blasio. Others who witnessed the swearing in included former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The previous evening, just after midnight, he was officially sworn in at his home in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

De Blasio, the first democrat to lead the city in two decades is a former City Council member who most recently served as the city’s public advocate.

During his inaugural speech, de Blasio spoke about economic inequality in the city, comparing it to other problems the city has faced, including the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and Superstorm Sandy.

“Our city is no stranger to big struggles — and no stranger to overcoming them,” de Blasio said. “New York has faced fiscal collapse, a crime epidemic, terrorist attacks, and natural disasters. But now, in our time, we face a different crisis — an inequality crisis. It’s not often the stuff of banner headlines in our daily newspapers. It’s a quiet crisis, but one no less pernicious than those that have come before.”

He was a dark horse candidate just 6 months prior to the election, but by positioning himself in direct opposition to Bloomberg, he managed to swing the vote in his favor.

Insisting that his political talk was not just hot air, particularly on the issue of inequality, De Blasio addressed the issue with conviction.

“Its urgency is read on the faces of our neighbors and their children, as families struggle to make it against increasingly long odds,” said de Blasio. To tackle a challenge this daunting, we need a dramatic new approach — rebuilding our communities from the bottom up, from the neighborhoods up. And just like before, the world will watch as we succeed.”

“All along the way, we will remember what makes New York, New York,” he added. “A city that fights injustice and inequality — not just because it honors our values, but because it strengthens our people. A city of five boroughs — all created equal…. A city that remembers our responsibility to each other — our common cause — is to leave no New Yorker behind.”

Clinton had high praise for the new mayor in his introduction and for the political future of his administration.

“He represents, with his family, the future of our city and the future of our country,” Clinton said.

  • Barbara Bush Still Hospitalized, Condition Unchanged

Former first lady Barbara Bush remains hospitalized at Methodist Hospital in Houston with a respiratory-related issue, a spokesman for her husband’s office said Wednesday.

CBS News confirmed that the 88-year-old matriarch of the Bush family is being treated for pneumonia and said to be responding well to treatment at a Houston hospital.

“She is in great spirits, has already received visits from her husband and family, and is receiving fantastic care,” the statement read.

Jim McGrath, a spokesman for the former president, said there was “nothing new to report” on Wednesday. The statement said updates would be released if her condition changes.

President Barack Obama released a written statement saying he hopes Bush gets well soon.

“Michelle and I send our best wishes to Mrs. Bush for a speedy recovery,” the president said. “Barbara is blessed to have both a loving, supportive family by her side and a vibrant spirit that we hope will have her feeling better soon. I know I speak for Americans everywhere when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with Barbara and her family on this New Year’s Day.”

Also Wednesday, former President Bill Clinton tweeted:

While her husband seems to have more health issues than his wife, Mrs. Bush did have heart surgery in March 2009 for a severe narrowing of the main heart valve. She also underwent surgery in November 2008 for a perforated ulcer and in 2010, she was admitted to the hospital after having a mild relapse of the thyroid condition, Graves disease, for which she was treated in 1989.

  • Mark Wahlberg Expresses Gratitude for His Family

It was through a discussion with the man Mark Wahlberg portrays in his latest movie Lone Survivor that the actor realized how grateful he was to have his wife Rhea and his four children with him on set.

Wahlberg plays real-life Hospital Corpsman First Class Marcus Luttrell in the film that recounts the failed 2005 Navy SEALs mission “Operation Red Wings,” which took place during the War in Afghanistan.

“It’s really interesting to hear Marcus and other SEAL guys talk about when they go home to their families and they can’t discuss what they do. It’s just like trying to shut off what they just came from on some sort of mission, a special op, and then all of a sudden they’re at home and they’re taking their kids to school and they’re helping their wives make dinner,” Mark said.

“But it’s always comforting to have your family there, absolutely. They’re here now, which is nice. I asked them if they wanted to come to work and they said, ‘Daddy, your job is so boring. Absolutely not.’”

“It takes a very special individual to become a SEAL,” he said. “I felt it was so important to give the guys who never came down off that mountain their due. My wife couldn’t talk for 45 minutes after she saw the movie. All she kept thinking about were the sons and fathers and mothers and daughters out there fighting for our freedom.”

During the making of the film, Wahlberg and his co-stars Eric Bana, Emile Hirsch and Taylor Kitsch were treated like real SEAL Team soldiers which provided the actor with a greater understanding of mental strength.

“I’m 42-years-old so… As a man, I don’t want to sit on the bench; I want to be in the game. I always want the ball so you would think, but it’s not a question of a physical ability,” he explained.
“It really comes down to that mental toughness that I think sets those guys apart from a lot of other guys that can’t get through the training and graduate.”

  • Marijuana Legalization: Long Lines Form for Purchase

Recreational marijuana became legal in Colorado on Wednesday.

What started out as a a few people lining up outside pot shops early Wednesday quickly grew to crowds of hundreds as the day progressed.

With the rise in demand came the rise in prices as well. One shop reportedly raised its price for an eighth of an ounce from $25 to $45.

“What I love about it is the peacefulness of the crowd … and the diversity,” said Denver City Councilman Albus Brooks.

Chrissy and Logan Robinson were one of the first in line at one shop.

“I’ve been waiting 34 years for this moment,” Chrissy said. “I’ve been smoking since I was 14. No more sneaking around.”

John Stiltz, 62, was a customer who stood in line to mark the occasion.

“I smoked pot for the first time when I was 16 in the ’60s,” Stiltz said. “I looked forward to the day when a harmless, recreational drug would be legal. I wanted to be part of the history.”

Marijuana sales are illegal in the United State under Federal Law and while other countries have decriminalization policies towards the purchase of marijuana, Colorado is the first in the world to go this far in the legalization of marijuana, and with it, comes the watchful eye of the world.

According to state law, a Colorado resident can buy and possess up to an ounce of pot, while those with an out of state ID can buy a quarter of an ounce. With it comes a 25% state tax on top of the usual sales tax of 2.9%.

People came from all over the United States to mark the occasion. John Gray, who came from St. Louis said, “I’m like, they legalized pot today? So here I am.”

“It’s glorious!” said another man from Omaha.

Opponents of legalization were not as thrilled with the significance of the day.

Former White House drug-policy adviser Kevin Sabet said Wednesday marks the dawn of “Big Marijuana.”

“In any addictive industry, such as this one, the only way to make money is off of addiction,” Sabet said.

  • Axl Rose: Latest Scandal not so Scandalous

Axl Rose: Latest Scandal not so Scandalous

Axl Rose seems to get his fair share of negative press based on whatever latest scandal he’s involved in. However, the latest news on the rocker proves to be anything but scandalous.

According to New York Magazine writer Steve Fishman, who rented his New York City apartment to Axl Rose for two years, the rock star never set foot in the place and may very well be the best tenant ever.

In an article called “What Happened When Axl Rose Rented My Apartment”, the writer details his adventures, or lack thereof, of being the rocker’s landlord.

Fishman writes of how Rose wanted the apartment, was anxious to move in and how he was willing to pay 6 months of “extraordinary” rent in advance.

“Axl was in a hurry to get into the place, we were told,” writes Fishman. “And so we quickly decamped to Brooklyn. Then came move-in day. And then it went. So did a second and a third date. Still Axl didn’t move in.”

In total Rose rented the apartment for two years from 2010 to 2013 and Fishman believes his tenant never even set foot in the apartment.

“As far as I can tell, Axl never set foot in my place after his initial viewings,” writes Fishman. “I wondered if he remembered that he’d rented it. Maybe a superstar lives this way — renting apartments just in case, and then forgetting about them.”

Fishman admitted that he was worried about Rose’s reputation as one of those rockers who trash hotel rooms, but said that his experience was a far cry from what he expected.

“People have mixed views of Axl Rose, but as a landlord, I loved him,” said Fishman in the article. “If he ever needs a recommendation, I’ll happily write: Quiet, undemanding, and pays his rent.”

  • Texas A&M Football: Last Minute Rally to Beat Duke

No. 20 Texas A&M rallied late in at the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta on Tuesday to beat Duke after trailing 38-17 at halftime.

Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel finished his college career with a bang by throwing four touchdown passes, scoring a touchdown, running 73 yards and completing 30 of 38 passes for 382 yards.

When asked if this was the best way to end his career, he said: “I don’t know. It’s an unreal feeling, I know that. The way these guys fought, it was unreal. I’m proud of them.”

Toney Hurd Jr returned an interception 55 yards, giving them their first lead with 3:33 remaining and the game ended 52-48, making it the highest-scoring game in the bowl’s history.

“I was in a zone I haven’t been in before,” Manziel said. “Ever. I just wanted this game.”

Heading into the fourth quarter, No. 22 Duke (10-4) had a 41-31. With this loss, the Blue Devils are still looking for their first bowl win since beating Arkansas 7-6 in the 1961 Cotton Bowl.

Hurd stepped in front of receiver Johnell Barnes for the interception, the first turnover for either team. Texas A&M linebacker Nate Askew ended Duke’s next possession with another interception.

Duke quarterback Anthony Boone passed for 427 yards and three touchdowns, but the two interceptions certainly played into the loss.

“It hurt,” Boone said. “It was a very unfortunate play on my part.”

Manziel, a third-year sophomore won the Heisman Trophy as a freshman last season and is likely he will be a first-round pick if he decides to enter the NFL draft.

“I can’t even talk about anything other than this game,” Manziel said. “This was unreal. … I haven’t made (the decision) yet. I’m in the moment right now.”

  • Dubai Fireworks 2014 Display Breaks World Record

There are many cities in the world that go all out to ring in the new year, but no one does it quite like Dubai.

Complete with a mock sunrise along the seafront, the country beat the world’s record for the largest single fireworks display as 2013 ended and 2014 began, said Guinness World Records.

The display, designed by the U.S. firm Fireworks by Grucci, took 10 months to plan, lasted six minutes and had over 500,000 fireworks.

The scope of the display was truly amazing.

Incorporating some of Dubai’s top landmarks, including Palm Jumeirah, World Islands, the Burj Khalifa and Burj Al ArabIt, the display covered a distance of over 94 km of the city’s seafront and some fireworks reached a height of over one kilometer.

The goal was to beat a record set in 2012 during a display to mark Kuwait’s golden jubilee comprised of 77,282 fireworks.

Dubai managed to break that within the first minute of the display.

Using 100 computers to synchronise the pyrotechnics and a choreographed musical soundtrack, it took more than 200 expert technicians and 5,000 man hours of preparation to ensure the timing was accurate down to the last millisecond.

Before the fireworks were launched, Global President of Guinness World Records Alistair Richards said, “The scale of this record attempt is truly impressive and will ensure all eyes are on Dubai.”

  • NFL Coaches Fired: 5 Gone So Far on ‘Black Monday’

‘Tis the season for NFL Coach firings.

It’s going to be a rude awakening on New Year’s Day for at least five coaches who have been fired less than a day after the NFL’s regular season ended.

The first to go was Cleveland Browns coach Rob Chudzinski who was fired Sunday night after only one season.

Monday was unemployment day for Washington Redskin’s Mike Shanahan, Detroit Lion’s Jim Schwartz, Minnesota Vikings’ Leslie Frazier and Tampa Bay Buccaneer’s Greg Schiano.

Shanahan coached for four seasons with the Redskins, with a 24-40 record; Frazier for three seasons with the Vikings with an 18-33-1 record and Schwartz five seasons with the Lions with a 29-52 record.

Schiano, fired with three years and $9 million left on his contract, coached for two years with the Buccaneers with an 11-21 record.

“It’s tough for the players to see your coaches go. You never want to see anybody get fired,” Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy said. “Me personally, I haven’t had any, consistently, in my career. Third head coach, going on my fifth year and three head coaches. Add up everybody, it’ll be six D-line coaches.”

Chudzinski was very surprised when the pink slip came.

“I was shocked and disappointed to hear the news that I was fired,” said Chudzinski. “I am a Cleveland Brown to the core, and always will be. It was an honor to lead our players and coaches, and I appreciate their dedication and sacrifice. I was more excited than ever for this team, as I know we were building a great foundation for future success.”

Shanahan was fired with only one season remaining on a five-year, $35 million contract. He blames a salary cap and a bad relationship with quarterback Robert Griffin III for the poor results.

Frazier managed to get the Vikings to the playoffs as a wild card last season. Issues with finding a steady quarterback and a weak defense led to his firing.

“It’s a harsh business,” safety Harrison Smith said. “As a player, we all love coach Frazier, as a coach, as a man. You can’t meet a better guy. And also as a player, we didn’t make enough plays on the field. So you just feel like you let him down a little bit.”

Schwartz had two years and almost $12 million remaining on his contract when fired.

“From where we were in 2008 to where we are now it’s a big difference,” quarterback Matthew Stafford said. “We owe a lot of that to him. He’s a really smart guy and helped us get to where we are. Obviously, we didn’t win as many games as we needed to or as we should have this year.”

Sotomayor, who calls the Bronx home, will lead the million plus crowds that flock Times Square to ring in the new year by pushing the crystal button at 11:59 p.m., event organizers announced in a news release.

“Justice Sotomayor is an inspiration to many, and it is a privilege to welcome her to our celebration to ring in 2014,” said Times Square Alliance President Tim Tompkins in a statement.

“Who better to join us in the Crossroads of the World than one of New York’s own,” he added.

Tompkins said that regular attendee Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who led the celebration last year, will not be present this year, opting instead to celebrate privately with family and friends.

Sotomayor is the first Latina and the third female Supreme Court judge and was appointed in 2009. She is also the first Supreme Court justice to have the honor of pushing the New Year’s Eve ball button on Times Square.

  • Duchess of Argyll’s Mystery Lover Revealed

After 50 years, the identity of the mystery lover in the British Duchess of Argyll sex scandal has been revealed.

It turns out that an American airline executive was the lover of Margaret Campbell, known as the Duchess of Argyll, in an affair that kept Britain talking during divorce proceedings in 1963.

At the time, it was shocking to the country when pictures were shown in court of her performing sex acts on a man who could not be identified because his head was cut out of the shot.

According to the duchess’ daughter-in-law, Lady Colin Campbell, her mystery lover mystery was William “Bill” Lyons, who was a sales director of Pan American World Airways in the 60s.

“For 50 years it has been safely, maybe too safely, kept – for in keeping it, we have also perpetuated the mystery, and in so doing we have done Margaret’s reputation no favors,” Campbell wrote in a first-person article for The Daily Mail.

Campbell said is was the Duchess of Argyll herself who told her the mystery man in the photo was Lyons. “He [Lyons] was sophisticated, debonair, dapper, well-bred, charming and handsome,” said Campbell. “Like her first husband Charlie, he was sexy and great fun. He was reliable and astute.”

She added: “To those of us who were close to her it was hardly a surprise. Bill was her lover, after all.”

In closing she added, “Then, and only then, will everyone be able to appreciate that what she was doing in those photographs was not so very terrible. She was simply a woman in love – who was unfortunate enough to have a memento of something happy stolen from her.”

The Duchess of Argyll died in 1993.

  • Kate Gosselin Totally Dissed by Ex Jon

Kate Gosselin Totally Dissed by Ex Jon

    Whoah!

Jon Gosselin is not feeling the love this holiday season. The ex-husband of reality star Kate Gosselin said some really harsh things about his former wife in an interview with Philadelphia Magazine.

“Everyone thinks I’m out to get Kate. I don’t give a f-ck!” the Jon & Kate Plus Eight star said, “What would I get out of it? Everyone knows she’s an a–hole, you know what I mean? I don’t have to—she’s proven that!”

He continued to criticize Kate’s use of social media, saying it is not good for the kids, “She tweets everything. To the world, all about my children. I think it’s disgusting and awful. They can’t even have a normal life.”

The 38-year-old Gosselin continued saying that Kate always seeks the spotlight. “Kate wants to still be on television. She’s now digging into the past, because that’s what sells. Too late, honey. No one gives a f–k, really.”

Although Kate has not responded to the latest outburst by her ex, it’s clear the two have little love for each other.

After Jon told Oprah Winfrey that their eight children have stubbled “developmentally”, Kate responded by saying that Jon has “value judgements…based on his limited visits (albeit mutually agreed upon) with our children.”

“I find it very heartbreaking that my children’s father chooses a public forum to discuss his current opinions of the ‘development’ of our children,” she wrote on her blog Monday, admitting that she risked “stirring up an unwanted public and private ‘frenzy’ by commenting on this, but, if our children ever stumble upon that interview, I want to be able to point them to this statement so that they know that I publicly set the record 100% straight on this one, for their sake.”

Love has never been lost between these two, but perhaps they need to think more about the kids. What do you think?

  • Taylor Swift Most Charitable Celebrity of 2013

Taylor Swift was once again named at the top of the list of “Celebs Gone Good” by the website DoSomething.Org.

The website encourages young people to “make the world suck less,” and claims to have over 2.2 million young people engaged in the fight to do things to make the world better. They champion causes like bullying, animal cruelty, cancer, and homelessness.

This year is the second year in a row for Swift, 24, to win the top honor. The website said this about Swift:

“The country-pop star has topped our chart for the second year in a row. And with good reason too, y’all. Swift recently celebrated her 24th birthday by GIVING gifts instead of getting. She donated $100,000 to the Nashville Symphony, which has faced extreme financial difficulties this year. (Her good-doing even transcends continents!)”

  • Gisele Bundchen Surprises Young Cancer Victim

Gisele Bundchen made a surprise visit to a 15-year-old girl battling bone cancer on Dec. 26 to trade beauty and makeup secrets with the aspiring make-up artist.

Karina Xavier, a teen fashion blogger who posts style tips on her website ChicByKarina.com, hopes to one day be a professional makeup artist. And she was able to show off her skills to Bunchen by applying make-up to the supermodel.

The young make-up artist, and fellow Brazilian, later shared a Facebook picture of the surprise visit from the supermodel, saying:

“From the moment you surprised me, until the moment you left, I was so shocked for you being here with me! Thank you so much for taking time off of your day to come visit me and spend some time with me! Also thank you for your kind words and your very meaningful gifts! You are a great person and you will continue inspiring me I love you @giseleofficial And to my followers: Stay tuned for something special on my blog!!! I’m so happy!!!!!!”

Bunchen also posted her own thoughts on the visit and of the young cancer victim, “You are warrior, an inspiration of positivity and courage. I will be praying for you. Sending you love and light always.”

This was a far different Instagram post from one that Bundchen posted earlier this month. In the previous post, she shared a picture showing herself breastfeeding while getting her makeup done for a photo shoot.

Alongside the picture she said, “What would I do without this beauty squad after the 15 hours flying and only 3 hours of sleep #multitasking#gettingready.”

The picture of Bundchen sparked some criticism and debate about breastfeeding.

“Some people here think they don’t have to breastfeed, and I think, ‘Are you going to give chemical food to your child, when they are so little?’ There should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months,” she said.

    Duck Dynasty: Twitter Apologizes

Twitter has apologized to users of support website IStandWithPhil.com for Duck Dynasty‘s Phil Robertson “after “accidentally” blocking the site.

Robertson was suspended from the popular A&E show after making anti-gay remarks in an interview with GQ.

Both were pronounced dead at University Hospital in Newark, as was a third victim, Mushir Cureton, 27, of Newark.

Pierre Clervoyant Sr., who owned Slick’s, said two men came to the bar at around 12:30 a.m. “They were clearly drunk,” said Clervoyant Sr. so his son approached the men “to calm the situation down.” When the argument with Daniel moved outside, one of the men pulled out a gun and fired, he said, killing Daniel and Clervoyant Jr., fatally wounding Cureton and injuring two others.

Outside the Hillside home of Woodley Daniel Wednesday afternoon, at least a dozen friends and relatives gathered to mourn the victim.

“We were born several days apart,” said Daniel’s cousin, Noah Joseph, 32. “Our mothers carried us in their wombs at the same time.” Joseph said Daniel was originally from Irvington and had moved to Hillside.

“He was very loved,” Joseph said. “He had many nieces and nephews and he was a father to all of them. He was a good man with a heart of gold. Anyone who knows him will say that about him. He was a protector. He was a hero.”

“He was trying to be the peacemaker,” said Stephanie Clervoyant, 25, the sister of the bar manager.

Candice Clervoyant, a maternity nurse at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston and the wife of Clervoyant Jr said, “Everyone knew Pierre because of his smile. He was better than a great father,” she said. “He was excellent. He was kind and compassionate.” They have a daughter who turned six on Sunday.

Clervoyant also worked for the city of Elizabeth, in the Office of Aging, which runs programs for senior citizens.

Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage called him “A great young man who had everything going for him,” in an e-mail.
