Josh Duhamel tweeted a picture on Sunday, Sept. 8, of his and Fergie’s “first parenting compromise”—a Miami Dolphins stuffed animal wearing a Minnesota Vikings hat! “This isn’t so hard,” the new dad wrote.

Axl, who was born Aug. 29 via C-section at L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Hospital, will hopefully root for mom and dad’s favorite teams, but he won’t get away with whatever he wants.

When asked whether he or Fergie, 38, would be the disciplinarian with the couple’s little one, Josh said they “both have a little bit of that in us.”

Fergie and Josh already have a handle on this whole parenting compromise thing!

  • Nancy Pelosi: Republicans Want Government Shutdown

California Democrat, Nancy Pelosi, claims anti-government ideologues dominate the GOP and for them forcing a shutdown would be a victory. She says they are using healthcare battle as an excuse to shut it down.

Pelosi says the goal of some in the GOP is to get the government out of the lives of Americans by handing Social Security over to private bankers and allowing Medicare to “wither on the vine.”

She says, according to AP, that GOP efforts to derail health-care reform and shut down the government have “no prospect of prevailing.” Ms. Pelosi said of Republicans,“I call them legislative arsonists,” she said on CNN’s “State of the Union”.

However, there are two sides to every story. Well, this IS politics, so 5 sides…

Bloomberg reports that Republican Senator Ted Cruz is leading the congressional Republican fight to defund the Affordable Care Act, as the threat of a government shutdown nears, and he said he expects Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, to strip a bill the Republican-led House passed on Sept. 20 of the health-care language.

“I believe we should stand our ground,” said Cruz on the “Fox News Sunday” program. “The House is the only body where Republicans have the majority, so the House has to lead on this,” said Cruz.

House Speaker John Boehner will begin passing individual bills funding “one department at a time,” starting with the military, if the Democratic-led Senate blocks a stopgap government funding bill that also chokes off funds to the health law, said Cruz.

Harry Reid has said the House bill is “dead” in the Senate. He said he will have the votes to remove the health-care language from the bill before sending it back to the House. No Democrats and only about one-third of the 46 Republicans in the Senate support the House effort.

The fact is, even some Republicans are saying that Cruz and his supporters are headed for defeat. Democrats who control the Senate will never vote to end the health law, and even if they did, the president would veto it.

“Tactics and strategies ought to be based on what the real world is, and we do not have the political power to do this,” Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn, a Republican, said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” program. “In the end, House Republicans will have to surrender”, he said.“The exercise is fine,” he said. “We’re not about to shut the government down.”

  • John McAfee is Back, Not Being Idle

John McAfee is Back, Not Being Idle

John McAfee is back. A year has past since he fled Belize because authorities suspected him of murdering his neighbor, which he still insists didn’t happen. “Belize is the murder capital of the world,” he said this week. “It’s a very violent, very dangerous place.” Since returning to America, he has holed up in Portland, Oregon and has lived the hermit life.

But times have been iffy for the McAfee creator. NBC reports that a few months ago, he posted a suggestive video on YouTube mocking his former anti-virus software company. And just last week he had to respond to a false report that he had died of an overdose in Las Vegas. McAfee was angry and said the hoax was not a publicity stunt. In fact he spent a lot of time frantically contacting friends who believed he was dead.

He explained the phenomenon this way: “When I’m idle,” he told CNBC, “I get in trouble. Even when I’m not idle I sometimes get in trouble.” Ok. Well, now he’s back in Silicon Valley, taking meetings, speaking at technology events and promoting new ventures. “I’m not going back to the jungle,” he said. “I enjoyed it for a while. I think cities are more my thing now.”

The park where his NBC interview took place was near the Ecuadorean Consulate. Apparently, McAfee had spent the morning there. He mentioned that he has a place in Ecuador and might want to visit, but not stay again.

When he was asked about the current crowd of tech companies that exist more than 25 years after hitting it big with McAfee anti-virus software, McAfee said, “There’s really only one hot tech company right now and that’s Google … the owner of the world’s information is the ruler of the world.”

He said he doesn’t blame companies like Google for handing over information to the National Security Agency. “They have guns. Google does not,” he said.

McAfee will speak at C2SV, a highly anticipated tech and music event in Silicon Valley. It will be his first professional event of that nature since returning to the U.S. He plans to unveil an amazing new type of communication technology product he’s developing. The only hint he would give away ahead of time is that the product will be a localized networking platform.

“See these people wandering around the park here? If they were all connected in a way where within 50 feet, 100 feet … you could all be communicating, and as you walked, your friend set would constantly change,” he said. McAfee is self-funding the venture and meeting privately with potential technology partners in Palo Alto, California. He said the new project will cost him “in the seven figures”.

McAfee says the most visionary tech leader right now is Kim Dotcom, the man accused by the U.S. government of alleged copyright fraud on a grand scale through his now-defunct website Megaupload. “Look at what the man did, for heaven’s sake,” said McAfee. “He single-handedly collected a double-digit percentage of the Internet traffic. Do you realize how monumental this is?”

Critics might hold the opinion that Dotcom grabbed that share by stealing content. “He’s a criminal only if you believe the party line that ‘If I created it, it is mine’ … content will have to be free eventually,” McAfee said.

But the readers of TechWeek seemed be more fond of McAfee and gave him the most votes in a poll about who should be the next CEO of Microsoft. He found the results of the poll laughable, but if he was CEO of the struggling company, he said: “I would fire almost everybody … (Microsoft) has become archaic in its thinking, and it’s because for so long, there was only one thinker in the company, and that was Bill Gates. He’s a mighty fine thinker, I admit. Not very good socially, I wouldn’t want to have dinner with him. However, a fine thinker.”

Who would McAfee like to portray him in the movie that Warner Brothers is developing based on McAfee’s adventures? Bryan Cranston, of course. He portrays chemistry teacher-turned-drug-lord Walter White in “Breaking Bad”. He added, “I think he would be perfect.”

As for McAfee Inc., the company he created and then dumped? “I don’t use the software myself, haven’t used it for years.”

    Ouch.

    Rihanna Pic: Primate Peddlers Arrested

Rihanna found out the hard way that it’s all fun and games until the monkey peddler goes to the Pokey. Visiting a beach in Thailand, Rihanna left behind a trail of racy tweets and incriminating Instagram photographs that led police to arrest two people for allegedly peddling protected primates. On a break from her Diamonds world tour, she stopped at Phuket for a little R and R and wildlife bonding.

Yahoo reports that she posted a link on Twitter to an Instagram photo that showed her in sunglasses snuggling up to a furry primate called the slow loris. The slow loris, a squirrel-like animal with big eyes, is native to Southeast Asia and is apparently listed as a protected species. Rihanna tweeted Friday:

Apparently this is a big issue as a statement was made by Thailand authorities: “Phuket authorities were alerted to the picture (of Rihanna), and last night police arrested the two individuals who brought out the loris as a photo opportunity for tourists,” a Phuket district chief, Weera Kerdsirimongkon, said by telephone Sunday.

Weera said authorities have tried for many years to crack down on vendors exploiting wildlife, particularly in popular tourist areas where people are willing to pay to have their picture taken with elephants, orangutans and other animals. “It’s like a cat-and-mouse game. But this time it’s bigger because a celebrity like Rihanna posted the picture, and there were more than 200,000 ‘likes’ from around the world,” he said.

Police confiscated two lorises from the pair of primate-nabbers, one a 20-year-old man and the other, a 16-year-old boy. They could face charges of possession of protected animals. The charge carries a penalty of up to four years in prison and a 40,000 baht ($1,300) fine.

  • Oprah Winfrey Admits Nervous Breakdown

    Oprah Winfrey Admits Nervous Breakdown

Oprah Winfrey revealed to Access Hollywood that she suffered from the symptoms of a nervous breakdown while filming her role in “The Butler”. Playing a really involved role such as that one and dealing with her own struggling network almost did her in. Oprah said she realized her emotions were on overload while she was interviewing Jason Russell of the Kony 2012 movement. Russell suffered a nervous breakdown in which he was arrested for running naked through the streets of San Diego. Watch the interview:

“I was sitting and listening to Jason Russell describe his symptom … Saying, ‘Um, this sounds pretty familiar to me,’ ” Winfrey said. “In the beginning, it was just sort of speeding and a kind of numbness and going from one thing to the next thing to the next thing. I will tell you when I realized that I thought, ‘All right, if I don’t calm down I’m gonna be in serious trouble.’ I was in the middle of doing voiceovers, you know? And I remember closing my eyes in between each page because looking at the page and the words at the same time was too much stimulation for my brain,” she added.

“I mean, I wasn’t ready to go run naked in the streets. Let’s make that very clear,” Winfrey said. “But I had reached a point where I just couldn’t take in anymore stimulation. Ok? That’s what I meant by that.”

She was also getting ready (and getting nervous) to launch a new show on her network starring none other than Lindsay Lohan.

“I went to her house just to say, ‘What are you doing? Let’s get real here.’ And… ‘This is what’s conflicting about it.’ Because it’s television and we stand to gain if it does well. But the real truth is – and anybody who knows me, certainly my producers on the way there – Sheri Salata was in the car – I said, ‘If I get here and Lindsay isn’t serious, I will shut this thing down today.’”

That would do it. Just sayin’.

  • Jennifer Hudson Look-A-Like Gets Hassled by Paps

A poor girl that could be Jennifer Hudson’s doppelganger was chased down by the paparazzi this weekend for an entertainment site. The caption read “Jennifer Hudson dressing to impress” but that was no Jennifer Hudson. It was a random citizen who resembles the Grammy winning beauty!

The poor girl was just walking down the street, minding her own business in a smashing gray outfit. Maybe she was “dressing to impress”, but probably not to impress anyone in Jennifer Hudson’s crowd.

While we mere mortals can imagine that celebrities live fascinating, carefree, luxurious lives, I think most of us would not trade them for it when it comes to instances like this one. With the recent run-ins with the paparazzi like Jennifer Garner’s encounter with a shutterbug and the impending legal action stemming from acts such as that, I can’t help but feel…just a little…sorry for them.

I know, I know, they have everything. They never have to clean their own house, or do their own hair, and they take exotic vacations. Not to mention, they have the adoration of millions to keep them warm at night.

But I think it would get a little old being followed everywhere, hounded by people on the street and never having a moment to yourself. I can imagine the rage I would feel as my children were crowded and hassled, and probably terrified, by strangers with cameras. Not being able to do anything without the world knowing about it would be so incredibly uncomfortable!

Now imagine you don’t even have all the fame to go with that? You don’t have the endless cash flow and the glory of being an American celebrity, yet you are photographed and chased by lunatics shouting, “Jennifer, Jennifer!”. That, my friends, must have been unpleasant. And maybe a little funny.

  • Farm Aid 2013 Concertgoers Entertained, Educated

Farm Aid used their platform and annual benefit festival featuring over a dozen artists, to raise awareness and support families and farms. Yahoo reports that Board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews want to emphasize the responsibility, this year, of businesses, policymakers, and all eaters of food to help get the word out about the Good Food Movement.

“Every time we eat, we determine the direction of our food system,” said Nelson, president and founder of Farm Aid. “Farmers are doing their part. When we all stand with them and do our part, we can bring about change that’s good for all of us.”

Farm Aid 2013 featured performances by Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young, and Dave Matthews with Tim Reynolds, in addition to Jack Johnson, Amos Lee, Jamey Johnson, Kacey Musgraves, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Pegi Young & The Survivors, Carlene Carter, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Bahamas, Sasha Dobson, Jesse Lenat, Insects vs. Robots and The Blackwood Quartet.

More than 25,000 fans attended the sold-out event, hosted at Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. All those music lovers also enjoyed some incredible food. HOMEGROWN Concessions® brought family farm-sourced foods to concertgoers including organic burgers and corndogs, grilled cheese with family farm bacon and local tomatoes, and antibiotic-free pork chop sandwiches, poutine with organic fries and homemade gravy, and Chipotle Mexican Grill’s beef barbacoa chili.

Seasonal menu items included grilled local non-GMO corn, a garden green vegetable wrap and local fresh fruit sold at GrowNYC’s HOMEGROWN Youthmarket. Dessert offerings included fair trade coffees and local cider donuts, ice cream and maple cotton candy.

Farm Aid wasn’t just all about the music. Farm Aid’s HOMEGROWN Village featured hands-on educational activities where concert attendees learned disappearing agrarian skills such as curing bacon, growing mushrooms and making cheese. Farm Aid partnered with the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York to help meet the needs of the hungry across the region by collecting nonperishable food items from concertgoers at the main entrances to SPAC.

Filmmaker Curt Ellis, also the founder of the nonprofit organization FoodCorps, moderated a discussion about the challenges family farmers face and strategies for a strong Good Food Movement. Chuck Curtiss of Willow Marsh Farm in Ballston Spa, N.Y.; Ben and Lindsey Shute of Hearty Roots Community Farm in Clermont, N.Y.; and Jayson Rosado of GrowNYC’s Youthmarket joined Nelson, Mellencamp, Young and Matthews, along with Jack Johnson and Farm Aid Executive Director Carolyn Mugar, for the conversation.

Carolyn Mugar said there is new urgency for all Americans to fight for a safe, healthy, family farm food system and pointed to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showing that industrial livestock agriculture is contributing to increased human antibiotic resistance.

“Farm Aid artists have all sparked a movement that many have now joined,” said Mugar. “Farmers, community leaders, food businesses, schools, parents, chefs and eaters young and old are seizing opportunities to make changes that support family farm agriculture. The possibilities for good food grow exponentially when we all step up in whatever way we can.”

According to Farm Aid’s website, Farm Aid’s mission is to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. Farm Aid artists and board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews host an annual concert to raise funds to support Farm Aid’s work with family farmers and to inspire people to choose family farm food. Since 1985, Farm Aid, with the support of the artists who contribute their performances each year, has raised more than $43 million to support programs that help farmers thrive, expand the reach of the Good Food Movement, take action to change the dominant system of industrial agriculture and promote food from family farms.

“That’s our job, to keep the farmers on the land,” Farm Aid co-founder Willie Nelson said. “We think about saving the family farm. I believe the family farm will save us.”

  • Tomiko Bolton Marries Billionaire Soros

George Soros, 83-year-old billinaire and philanthropist marries 42-year-old girlfriend Tamiko Bolton, a healthcare consultant in a lavish ceremony at his Caramoor estate in Bedford, an hour away from New York City. It is the same estate he bought a decade ago from famous author Micheal Crichton.

According to the Daily Mail, This is the third marriage for Soros who was divorced from Annaliese Witschak in 1983 and Susan Weber Soros in 2005. Federal judge Kimba Wood officiated at the non-denominational wedding, which was attended only by family members, including Soros’ five children from his two previous marriages.

The bride’s dress was designed by U.S.-based, Lebanon-born Reem Acra, whose gowns have been worn on the red carpet by many stars, including Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez and Soros reportedly put a beautiful Graff wedding band on Bolton’s special finger during the half-hour ceremony, according to a source.

The wedding ceremony was followed by a reception on Saturday evening with more than 500 guests at an arts center in nearby Katonah. Chef Bo Bech of the Geist Restaurant in Copenhagen prepared the food. The Giest was a particularly special choice because Soros and Bolton first dined at Geist when visiting Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2009 and it quickly became a favorite.

The three-day celebration began on Friday with a dinner followed by a reception at the Museum of Modern Art with a special preview of the new Rene Magritte exhibit.

Reportedly some of the guests at the various events were World Bank President Jim Yong Kim and some foreign leaders, including Hendrik Toomas Ilves, president of Estonia; Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia; and Edi Rama, prime minister of Albania. Also expected to have attended were fellow titans of the hedge fund world, Paul Tudor Jones and Julian Robertson.

The reception featured the musical stylings of well-known names like Hungarian composer and conductor Iván Fischer, a family friend, who created a new arrangement just for Soros’ big day, which was presented with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. In addition to that, Cape Verdean singer Mayra Andrade performed with the Harris Lane Orchestra. Andrade and Roma ensemble Via Romen will perform at a Sunday brunch today.

  • Henry Blackaby Found, Will Undergo Heart Surgery

On Friday the family of Henry Blackaby, author of Experiencing God and a popular Baptist minister, posted on his website, blackaby.net that he was was no longer missing, and thanked supporters for their prayers.

“The Blackaby family would like everyone to know that Henry has been found and is safe. His health concerns are being addressed and we will keep everyone posted with the news. We wish to express to everyone our appreciation and gratitude for the prayers and concern over the last 29 hours. Henry has taught us that we can experience God in the good and the bad times. We thank God that we have experienced his grace, peace, and faithfulness in these times.”

Baptist Press now reports that Blackaby will need surgery after suffering a heart attack Thursday while driving in Atlanta, becoming confused and traveling for 29 hours before police found him Sept. 20 in Tifton, Ga., about 150 miles southeast of his home.

Blackaby “seems to be in good spirits and lucid,” the Blackaby family said in a statement posted on the Blackaby Ministries International website around 6 p.m. Eastern time Saturday.

Apparently, Blackaby was on his way to pick up his wife Marilynn from an appointment when he suffered a heart attack, according to the statement.

“He did not have his cell phone with him nor insulin for his diabetes,” the statement said. “As a result, his blood sugar rose and his kidneys began to struggle as well. The family was able to track his movements as he used a credit card to make occasional purchases. The police assigned a detective group to monitor his movements and to track him down. Hundreds of volunteers, many from his church at First Baptist Church Jonesboro, GA drove all over the city looking for him. He is currently in a hospital undergoing extensive tests.”

After Henry Blackaby went missing, his website offered updates on sightings. It also urged readers to pray for his safe return. Twitter was also abuzz with fans encouraging his family and posting updates. Blackaby had been missing since Thursday afternoon after leaving his home near Atlanta. Henry suffers diabetes, and family members feared that he may have been affected by the condition and unable to find his way back home.

  • Cory Monteith Tribute at Emmys Stirs Controversy

The all-too-soon death of “Glee” star Cory Monteith in July left fans of the rising actor devastated. However, NBC reports that his inclusion in the prestigious Emmy Awards individual memorial tribute on the show tonight needs defending from some critics. Producers stated that Monteith would be remembered in a special “In Memoriam” segment alongside James Gandolfini, Jean Templeton and Jonathan Winters. But some critics argued that Monteith showed promise, but hadn’t lived long enough to fulfill it.

Variety’s Editor in Chief, Andrew Wallenstein wrote an opinion piece on the matter suggesting that “Monteith could have gone on to a tremendous career, but Larry Hagman, for instance, already had a tremendous career, and putting Monteith on a pedestal casts a shadow over the memory of this iconic “Dallas” star,” Wallenstein writes.

“The event should be first and foremost about recognizing a body of work,” he adds. “In that respect, the Emmys needs to aspire to timelessness, demonstrating its relevancy whether being watched on the night of the telecast or 20 years later. “The way to ensure it resonates both now and in the future is to stick to the accomplishments of the talent or the production,” Wallenstein says, arguing that Monteith showed promise yet unfulfilled.

He then added,”It’s about what has been achieved — not what could have been.”

However, Emmy Awards executive producer, Ken Ehrlich, defended his decision to include Monteith in the tribute on Saturday. He told Access Hollywood that critics should wait to see it before placing judgement.

“I do think when people see this, [when] they see that there’s kind of a message involved and what we’re saying about him, they may revise some of this early unfair advance criticism,” Ehrlich said. “I don’t want to go that far, but there certainly is — yes, there’s a message in this presentation that I think is a good message for people,” he added. “It does celebrate [Cory], because he really did significant work on that show, but it also, in a way, is a warning.”

  • Microsoft Phone: Nokia Purchase May Save Phone

Steve Ballmer is retiring as CEO of Microsoft. He readily admits his company reacted too slowly to developments in the mobile and smartphone markets. He also stated that Microsoft phone sales were disappointing. He was addressing a group of Wall Street investors and analysts, and told them that, with hindsight, he realized that the company had placed too much emphasis on its operating system and missed out on mobile phone opportunities.

Ballmer said, “I regret that there was a period in the early 2000s when we were so focused on what we had to do around Windows that we weren’t able to redeploy talent to the new device called the phone… That is the thing I regret the most. It would have been better for Windows and our success in other foreign factors.”

However, reports are surfacing that trying to view the situation from a “glass half full” stance, Mr. Ballmer said that for Microsoft mobile the only way to go is up and went on to say that the company has significant opportunities in the market now, due to its recent acquisition of the mobile phone unit of Nokia. He thinks this will allow Microsoft to speed up development on its Windows Phone platform.

Microsoft will reveal the second generation of its Surface tablet on Monday. The first Surface, released in October 2012, did not do well. Last July the company admitted that it had written off $900 milion in unsold Surface stocks. There is widespread speculation that this was what accelerated Mr. Ballmer’s departure from the company. A successor has not yet been announced. Whoever the successor may be that takes his place in 12 months, he or she will have the unenviable task of trying to ensure that the words “Microsoft phone” do not become synonymous for failure in the cutthroat mobile market.

  • Stroke Risk Possibly Reduced by Vitamin B

Stroke Risk Possibly Reduced by Vitamin B

Stroke risk may be reduced by taking Vitamin B, a new report says. However, Previous research has yielded conflicting findings on whether taking vitamin B supplements affects the risk of stroke or heart attack at all, and some studies have even concluded that taking vitamin B supplements may actually increase the risk, according to the review authors.

According to Medicinenet.com , the authors of the new report analyzed the findings of 14 clinical trials that included a total of almost 55,000 people and all of the trials compared vitamin B supplement use with a placebo or very low-dose vitamin B. The participants were followed for a minimum of six months and there were 2,471 strokes among the participants in the studies, all of which showed some benefit of taking vitamin B. Redorbit reports that vitamin B has been found to lower homocysteine levels, a molecule in the blood which aids in blood clotting. With lower levels of this molecule, the risk of a clot running through the blood stream and lodging in the brain is thereby reduced.

Vitamin B supplements reduced the risk of stroke by 7 percent, but did not appear to reduce the severity of strokes or the risk of death from stroke, according to the review. It was published in the Sept.18th online issue of the journal Neurology.

The researchers also found that folic acid, a supplemental form of folate, also known as B9, that is common in fortified cereals, appeared to reduce the beneficial effect of vitamin B and that vitamin B12 had no effect on stroke risk.

“Based on our results, the ability of vitamin B to reduce stroke risk may be influenced by a number of other factors, such as the body’s absorption rate, the amount of folic acid or vitamin B12 concentration in the blood, and whether a person has kidney disease or high blood pressure,” review author Xu Yuming, of Zhengzhou University in China, said in a journal news release. “Before you begin taking any supplements, you should always talk to your doctor,” Yuming added.

One expert agreed, noting that strokes can be caused by many varying factors.

“Ischemic strokes can have many different causes, the most common being hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking and obesity,” said Dr. Rafael Alexander Ortiz, director of neuro-endovascular surgery and stroke at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. “There is a group of patients that may suffer a stroke due to deficiency of vitamins and enzymes. It is appropriate to perform a comprehensive work-up, including [for] vitamin deficiencies, in patients that have suffered a stroke.”

Another expert said the findings are important. Dr. Albert Favate, director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City said, “[The report] identifies a substance which is readily available and has been demonstrated to have a positive effect in stroke risk reduction in certain population subgroups. The article also reflects the increased public thirst for dietary prevention of stroke.”

There are other ways to get B vitamins into the body other than supplements. Vitamin B, a group of 8 vitamins, can be found in unprocessed foods and meat. Foods like beef, cheese, crustaceans, eggs, fish and even fortified cereals and soy are all high in B vitamins.

  • Whitey Bulger Reportedly Amassed $25 Million

Whitey Bulger, Boston’s famous mob boss amassed over 25 million dollars through racketeering in his 20 years as an FBI informant, according to documents filed in Federal Court. CNN reports that a federal jury convicted Bulger in August on 31 counts of racketeering, extortion, and money laundering. They ultimately ruled that Bulger participated in the murder of 11 people. He will be sentenced on November 13.

The evidence presented at trial read that “the proceeds from the Defendant’s racketeering conspiracy totaled millions upon millions upon millions of dollars,” according to the federal prosecutors’ “motion of forfeiture” released on Friday, which breaks down Bulger’s spoils that were exposed in testimony from gangsters, former associates, drug dealers, convicted felons, and extortion victims during the 41 day trial this summer.

The notorious mob boss began building capital off his criminal empire around 1972. He continued until around 2000, 5 years after he went on the lam after being tipped off by his rogue FBI connection to a pending indictment.

Michael Solimando, a business entrepreneur testified that Bulger pointed a gun at his belly, and then threatened to kill his family. Solimando, 64, described how, at a meeting between them, Bulger took a machine gun and “shoved it underneath the table, pointed at my stomach and my groin,” and how he was forced to pay Bulger $400,000.

Marijuana smuggler, David William Lindholm, testified he almost didn’t survive a high-stakes Russian-roulette style drama when Bulger ordered his goon to load the chamber of a gun with one bullet and fire that bullet past his head.

“A bullet was put in the chamber it was spun and pointed at my head,” said Lindholm. He lived to testify that Bulger extorted $250,000 from him.

Many convicted drug dealers testified that Bulger collected “rent” from criminal operatives, a tax that had to be paid to him in order to do drug business in South Boston during the “Bulger Era”.

Richard Buccheri, a Boston real estate developer used two fingers to show the a gun barrel as he described how Bulger “takes a shotgun off the table and sticks it in my mouth. Then he took it out, punched me in the shoulder and said, ‘Richard you’re a stand-up guy. I’m not going to kill you.’” But then, Buccheri said, Bulger “puts a 45 to my head” and demands $200,000 in 30 days, “threatening to kill me and my family.”

Whitey Bulger was found hiding out in Santa Monica, California, with his girlfriend and $822,000 in cash in 2011. They also had 30 guns and an assortment of knives and a taser. Before his conviction, Bulger waived his right to a forfeiture hearing. The government has moved to seize Bulger’s personal assets that they say he gained from a life of gambling and drug dealing. These include jewelry, electronics, art, furniture, clothing and other items found in the Santa Monica apartment.

  • Debra McCurdy, Mother of Jennette McCurdy Dies

Debra McCurdy, Jennette McCurdy’s mother died Friday after a lengthy battle with cancer, E! News reports. Jennette McCurdy was the star of “iCarly” and “Sam and Cat”. Debra McCurdy was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 1995, but she had been in remission for 15 years when breast cancer returned in 2010. Unfortunately the cancer had spread throughout her entire body and into her brain.

“Jennette has suffered an unimaginable loss,” her rep said in a statement. “Please respect her and her family’s privacy at this time of mourning. She appreciates the love and support of her fans.”

Back in 2010, Jennette opened up about her mother’s battle with cancer in an essay she wrote from the heart in the Wall Street Journal she was “shocked” and “angry” when the cancer she had been cleared of, returned.

“I can’t imagine how difficult it must be for my mother to tolerate all she has gone through and continues to go through – the pain, the worry and the battle,” Jennette said. “She wakes up every day hurting and goes to sleep hurting even more. My mother, the constant optimist and effervescent, sprightly woman I know her to be, is caged along with this hideous beast they call cancer.”

“If you’re reading this and you were one of those people who thought, ‘young actors have perfect lives,’ I hope that you will think differently now,” she continued on. “We do have challenges. We do cry. We are experiencing difficult things. But we will continue to smile and crack jokes because, as entertainers, even if we’re privately struggling with painful trials, our job is to make others forget theirs.”

Although Jennette, nor her boyfriend Andre Drummond, have said anything publicly about the loss of her mother, the Detroit Pistons forward tweeted his feelings about his girlfriend’s private battle:

  • Sophia Loren Turns 79, Shares the Secret to Youth

Sophia Loren turned 79 on Friday. She was born Sofia Villani Scicolone in Rome in 1934. Loren’s two children with her late husband, Carlo Ponti are called Carlo Ponti Jr., aged 44, and Edoardo Ponti, aged 40. She also has four grandchildren aged one to seven. Carlo lives in LA, close to Eduardo, while Sophia lives “so far away!’ in Geneva. She said to reporters: “I really suffer with jet lag.”

But she doesn’t let a little jet lag get her down. Loren believes the the mind is the key to staying youthful, just like she said about her secret to defeating age: “There IS a Fountain of Youth. It is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of the people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”

Sophia Loren is not going let her senior years hold her back, in fact, she is very active in public appearances. She has visited Russia and China and has also made a surprise visit to her sister in Rome. Among other things, Loren is known for being a good and loyal friend to the likes of designer Georgio Armani, whose unique designs she wears on almost all of her public appearances.

Apparently, she shares it with a few other famous faces like actor Gary Cole, aged 57 and bassist Ben Shepherd, aged 45 from Soundgarden. Happy Birthday, Sophia! May you have many, many more and never look your age!

  • Bethenny Frankel: Dabbling in “Bad Botox”?

Bethenny Frankel: Dabbling in “Bad Botox”?

Bethenny Frankel always looks smooth and polished, but plastic surgery experts are suggesting that she may be looking a little…too smooth. According to the Daily Mail, the experts suggest perhaps she has dabbled in a little bad botox.

Dr. Robert Guida, a plastic surgeon based on New York’s Park Avenue, who counts dozens of celebrities among his clients, said that she’s had “too many injections in the wrong spots. This is causing her eyebrows to arch way too much , giving her an overdone, ridiculous look,’ he said, adding that the 42-year-old’s complexion also appears ‘too smooth’ and ‘far from natural.”

Another expert, who wished to remain unnamed, chimed in with her opinion. “Her face’s natural, instant reaction of surprise was to go wide eyed and lift both her eyebrows high up but she was unable to lift the inner edges of her eyes, creating a bat-eyed appearance.” They said in a recent trailer for her talk show, she appears ‘expressionless’ when former NFL star, Tiki Barber tells her he is expecting a child with the 23-year-old woman he left his pregnant wife for. They added that mother-of-one Ms Frankel also appears to have had her ‘eleven’ lines in-between her eyebrows Botoxed. “These creases can make one appear to be scowling or angry. The good news is she never looks angry as long as her injections last.”

To her credit, Bethenny Frankel has been open about going under the knife in 2005 for a boob job. She said she underwent the procedure, which took her from a C to a D, because she lost a lot of weight after high school. “They were really still saggy. . . .you know when you lay down naked and they’re over here (on either side of you). They’re like cocktails on the side. So my girlfriend said, you should do something.” However, she later had her breast implants removed because they were ‘too big’. Instead, she opted for a smaller size, in order to achieve a more natural look.

Previously starring on The Real Housewives of New York City, she made $120 million after selling her Skinnygirl line of cocktails. She first admitted to “trying” Botox in a 2009 interview with People magazine. She also revealed that she gets monthly microdermabrasion treatments to remove rough facial skin. However, a spokesperson for the star said that she no longer has Botox or fillers and there is no cause for concern.

The Florida native is now based in New York, and is currently going through a divorce with her businessman husband of two years, Jason Hoppy. They have a three-year-old daughter together, Bryn.

  • Jack Klugman Will Not Be in Emmy “In Memoriam”

Ceremony producers announced this week that five individual salutes would be included on Sunday night’s Emmy show in addition to the traditional “in memoriam” segment that groups together industry members who died in the past year. Jack Klugman will not be one of them. Klugman’s son says it’s an shame and an insult to the memory of the late TV veteran and three-time Emmy winner who starred in “The Odd Couple” and “Quincy M.E.,”.

“I think it’s criminal,” said Adam Klugman in an interview with The Associated Press. “My dad was at the inception of television and helped build it in the early days.” He added, “It’s an insult and it really seems typical of this youth-centric culture that has an extremely short attention span and panders to only a very narrow demographic” of young adults.”

Besides Cory Monteith, the “Glee” star who died in July of a heroin and drug overdose, those who will be honored are “The Sopranos” star James Gandolfini; Jean Stapleton of “All in the Family”; comedian and actor Jonathan Winters; and “Family Ties” producer Gary David Goldberg. Monteith, who was 31 when he died, is the youngest of the group. All the others are Emmy winners, but he had yet to be nominated in his short career.

In a statement, the Emmys executive producer Ken Ehrlich explained his reasoning, apparently a position that awards organizers often find themselves in when stars are absent from memorial segments. “To a younger generation, Cory Monteith’s portrayal of Finn Hudson (on ‘Glee’) was highly admired, and the producers felt that he should be included along with the four other individuals we have singled out,” Ehrlich said.

However, for Adam Klugman, it’s a shamful occurence, as his father’s career spanned more than fifty years. His amazing accomplishments included lead-actor Emmys for acclaimed series “The Defenders” in 1961 and “The Odd Couple” in 1971 and ’73. He died last December at age 90.

“What about the people who should be introduced to somebody like my father?” he said. “I don’t mean to say anything disparaging about Cory, but he was a kid who had won no Emmys and it was a self-induced tragedy.”

Larry Hagman, Charles Durning, and Jack Klugman will be included in the group remembrance, an academy spokesman said Friday. The ceremony at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles airs at 8 p.m. EDT Sunday on CBS.

  • Shooting in Kenya Mall Work of Terrorists, 39 dead

At least 39 people were killed and more than 150 wounded by Islamic extremist gunmen in an assault inside Nairobi’s top mall early today. Kenya’s president announced the attack on national TV, while disclosing that his close family members were among the dead. AP reports that terrified shoppers huddled in back hallways and prayed they would not be found by the terrorists lobbing grenades and firing assault rifles inside the mall.

When the coast was thought clear, crying mothers clutching small children and blood-splattered men sprinted out of the mall. As of early Sunday morning, about 12 hours after the attack began, gunmen remained holed up inside the mall with an unknown number of hostages. President Uhuru Kenyatta called the security operation under way “delicate”. Kenyatta said the top priority was to safeguard hostages.

As the attack unfolded shortly after noon Saturday, the al-Qaida-linked gunmen asked the victims they had cornered if they were Muslim. If the hostages answered yes, several witnesses said, those people were free to go. The non-Muslims were held. Police and military surrounded the huge shopping complex as helicopters buzzed overhead. An Associated Press reporter witnessed a wounded Kenyan soldier put into an ambulance at nightfall. Perhaps an indication of a continuing shoot-out inside.

The attack began shortly after noon with bursts of gunfire and grenades. Shoppers, mostly expatriates and rich Kenyans, fled to anywhere that might be safe, like into back corners of stores, back service hallways and bank vaults. Over the next several hours, pockets of terrified people poured out of the mall as undercover police moved in and some of the wounded mall goers were moved out in shopping carts.

“We started by hearing gunshots downstairs and outside. Later we heard them come inside. We took cover. Then we saw two gunmen wearing black turbans. I saw them shoot.” said Patrick Kuria, an employee at Artcaffe, the restaurant with shady outdoor seating.

Frank Mugungu, an off-duty army sergeant major, said he saw four male attackers and one female attacker. “One was Somali,” he said, but the others were black, suggesting that they could have been Kenyan or another nationality.

Somalia’s Islamic extremist group al-Shabab claimed responsibility and said the attack was retribution for Kenyan forces’ 2011 push into Somalia. The rebels then threatened more attacks. Al-Shabab said on its Twitter feed that Kenyan security officials were trying to open negotiations. “There will be no negotiations whatsoever,” al-Shabab tweeted. They also said that it has many times warned Kenya’s government that failure to remove its forces from Somalia “would have severe consequences.” Al-Shabab claimed that its gunmen had killed 100 people, but its assertions are often exaggerated.

Al-Shabab reportedly threatened in late 2011 to unleash a large-scale attack in Nairobi. Kenya has seen a regular spate of grenade attacks since then. However, they have never such a large terrorist assault. Anti-terror Police Unit boss Boniface Mwaniki said vests found were similar to those used in attacks that killed 76 people in Uganda. Those people had gathered to watch the soccer World Cup finals on TV in July 2010. Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for those bombings, saying the attack was in retaliation for Uganda’s participation in the African Union’s peacekeeping mission in Somalia.

“The attack at #WestgateMall is just a very tiny fraction of what Muslims in Somalia experience at the hands of Kenyan invaders,” al-Shabab said. Another tweet said: “For long we have waged war against the Kenyans in our land, now it’s time to shift the battleground and take the war to their land #Westgate.”

The U.S. embassy said it was in contact with local authorities and offered assistance and some British security personnel assisted in the response. The U.S. State Department condemned “this senseless act of violence that has resulted in death and injury for many innocent men, women, and children.”

The local hospital was overwhelmed with the number of wounded being brought in hours after the attack, so much so, that they had to divert them to a second facility. Dozens of people were seriously wounded. Officials said Kenyans turned out in droves to donate blood.

Foreigners were among the casualties. France’s president said that two French women were killed, and there were reports of American citizens injured, but the U.S. State Department said it had no further details.

The gunmen told hostages that non-Muslims would be targeted, said Elijah Kamau, who was at the mall at the time of the midday attack. “The gunmen told Muslims to stand up and leave. They were safe, and non-Muslims would be targeted,” he said.

Jay Patel sought cover on an upper floor in the mall when shooting began. He said that when he looked out of a window onto the upper parking deck of the mall he saw the shooters with a group of people. Patel said that as the attackers were talking, some of the people stood up and left and the others were shot.

The gunmen carried AK-47s and they wore vests with hand grenades on them, said Manish Turohit. He stayed alive by hiding in a parking garage for two hours. “They just came in and threw a grenade. We were running and they opened fire. They were shouting and firing,” he said after marching out of the mall in a line of 15 people who all held their hands in the air.

“These heartless acts against defenseless civilians, including innocent children, are beyond the pale and cannot be tolerated. We stand shoulder to shoulder with Kenya in its time of grief for these lives lost and the many injured,” President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said. Somalia’s president, obviously familiar with terrorist attacks, said his country knows “only too well the human costs of violence like this” as he extended his prayers to those in Kenya.

The United Nations Secretary General’s office said that Ban Ki-moon has spoken with President Uhuru Kenyatta and expressed his concern and British Prime Minister David Cameron also called Kenyatta and offered his assistance.

The attack was carried out by terrorists, said Kenyan police chief Benson Kibue. He did not specify a group. He said it was likely that no more than 10 attackers were involved.

  • Jessica Biel: The Secret Behind Her Glow

Jessica Biel: The Secret Behind Her Glow

Jessica Biel’s stunning (and matchy) appearance on the Runner Runner red carpet with husband Justin Timberlake is making waves for more reasons than just the couple’s suits. Reportedly, the 31-year-old star had a little help getting that red carpet glow. She went on a 2-day pressed juice cleanse and posted the pics on Instagram on Monday.

“This is happening! @eatpaleta two day detox,” she captioned. “Wish me luck.” Two days later, Biel shared another Instagram picture of the bottles—but this time, they were all empty. “Done! Detoxed & healthy from @eatpaleta 2 day cleanse,” she wrote. “Everything in moderation, people!”

    http://instagram.com/p/eVZOL1RaXO/

While she didn’t disclose the reason for the cleanse, we are left wondering if maybe her hubby had something to do with it. After all, in the January issue of Elle, the Minnesota native revealed that Timberlake loves baking pies.

“He’s Southern, so he’s got all this influence from his grandma. He does a three-layer pie, and blueberry crunch cake, which is pretty unbelievable,” she said of Timberlake, 32. “It doesn’t happen all that often, thank God. Otherwise, it would be a big problem.”

The juice came from Paleta. According to Paleta’s website, they are home to Southern California’s first certified green kitchen. PALETA provides designer meal services, CLEANSES, and pressed juices to the greater Los Angeles area and ships the popular MIND & BODY CLEANSE nationwide.

Their special cleanse is “a combination of targeted foods and nutritious shakes, the CLEANSE eliminates allergenic and processed foods and replaces them with “clean” foods that help you lose weight, boost your metabolism, and improve your hair and skin”

Well that would explain how she always looks so fantastic! Well, I’m sure it also has a little something to do with personal assistants, maids, hairdressers, photographers, and some airbrushing here and there…

  • Bus Driver Texts, Swerves, Gets Caught on Tape

A Tampa, Florida bus driver has been suspended for texting and driving with a bus full of middle-schoolers. An 8th grade girl from Hillsborough County School, and the daughter of Venus Cotto-Silva, was trying to catch the driver yelling and swearing to show her mother on September 13th, when she caught something unexpected, reports ABC.

In the video, the driver can be seen with one hand on the wheel while looking at her phone, which is in her other hand. At one point, the driver looks up from her phone, then suddenly grabs the wheel with both hands to avoid traffic, as she seems to be steering into the wrong lane. She then proceeds to look back down at her phone!

“When she showed me the video, I just couldn’t believe it,” Cotto-Silva said. “The scary part is, see how quickly she grabbed the wheel?”

In a statement, the school district said texting while driving is against policy for its bus drivers and that the driver in question had been suspended. “Clearly the driver is looking at her cellphone. That’s a dangerous distraction for any driver, but the potential danger is greater when you have a bus full of children,” the statement said.

According to the Christian Post, angry Florida parents have since come out against the driver for putting their children’s lives at risk with her careless driving.

Florida does not currently have any laws banning texting while driving, so the school bus driver was not technically breaking any laws, she only broke school policy. Florida does have a texting while driving ban in process, but the legislation does not come into effect until October 1, 2013.

However, that ban will not include bus drivers, ironically. Private bus companies and school administrators have been told that they should regulate their own private rules for their drivers.

In 2011, more than 3,000 people were reportedly killed in accidents involving a distracted driver.
