  • General Motors Under Fire For Recall Delay

General Motors CEO Mary Barra was under fire Wednesday as the house subcommitte meeting on General Motors’ 11-year delay in recalling dangerous vehicles continued.

This particular issue was raised about defective ignition switches which, with a heavy keychain or even a bump of the knee, could cut off power to the engine, power steering and brakes, and could cause airbags not to deploy.

The faulty switch has been blamed for 13 deaths, however, Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., said there could possibly be up to 100 deaths associated with the problem.

The switch has caused the government to open an investigation into the switches of 1.2 million Chrysler vehicles. Now, the federal government is asking why the recall took so long, and why these and other safety issues brought up by inspectors and employees weren’t immediately tackled.

Anton Valukas, an attorney who wrote the extensive report blames a culture inside General Motors that discouraged whistle-blowing. He claims that the complacency shown by executives and the “GM nod”-in which a committee agrees that something should be done, but no one does it-is to be blamed for delays and buck-passing that runs rampant through the company.

That accusation, if taken with some personal anecdotes, wouldn’t be hard to prove. Take the case of Courtland Kelley, who blew the whistle and is paying the price.

Steven Oakley, on page 93 of the report, was too afraid to push safety concerns that he noticed and reported on the Cobalt because his predecessor was “pushed out of the job for doing just that.”

That predecessor was Courtland Kelley, who’s predecessor before him was also relieved of duty for reporting, and insisting on action for, problems.

Together Kelley and his predecessor, Bill McAleer, worked in 1988 on what would become the company’s Global Delivery Survey. This was an audit of GM cars at rail yards across the country, a sort of spot check of vehicles on the last leg of their journey to dealerships. What they found was shocking.

“Bill and I looked at each other in amazement,” Kelley later recalled in a deposition, “that that kind of thing was happening, where the bolts on the front suspension fell out as we drove over the track. I thought that GM alarm bells would go off.”

But they didn’t. And the problem grew for Kelley as he continued to get the attention of executives at General Motors for other problems that he noticed. Finally, Kelley approached his direct supervisor, George Kingston, who in 2000 was director of quality for North American operations, with a heavy heart and lots of anxiety.

“I would go to George and tell him this, but it didn’t seem to surprise him or provoke him to take new action,” Kelley said. “He seemed to take it more seriously when I told him that I could no longer sit by and I may have to personally go to the federal government.”

Kingston’s response was discouraging and infuriating. “He cringed,” Kelley said, “and said that he would prefer that I don’t do that.”

That was it for Courtland Kelley. He sued in 2003 and lost after the case was dismissed. Then he was moved across the company to a much less desirable position.

How much blame will General Motors eventually take for all of these lives lost? I suppose only time will tell.

  • Jim McMahon And Other Former Players Sue NFL

Jim McMahon, former Bears quarterback, is in the fight of his life right now as one of several former players named in a federal lawsuit filed last month accusing the NFL of dispensing narcotics to keep players on the field when they shouldn’t have been.

Now the players are paying the price. McMahon, for example, has suffered many side effects of multiple concussions. He suffers from a broken neck that he says the team trainers knew about, but didn’t tell him. He suffers from kidney damage, broken ribs, and an addiction to pain killers.

And worst of all, he suffers from dementia.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-T1BzssI4gg

He was diagnosed five years ago with dementia. He began to notice symptoms after he was forgetting simple things like people’s names when they met him. However, he became worried and sought help when he began forgetting the names of friends he had for years.

He would get lost on his way home. He recalls such frustrating moments as having to call his girlfriend, Laurie Navon, to ask how to get home.

He said of the feeling, ”I don’t know where I’m at. I don’t know how I got on this road. I told her, ‘Aliens abducted me and put me over here.”’

Navon said that his mood swings were out of control, that he was ”mad at himself, mad at the world.”

During a very dark time, Jim McMahon thought about taking his life. The pain in his head was so bad that he would lie on his bed in the dark for weeks, only leaving for appearances.

”I am glad I don’t have any weapons in my house or else I am pretty sure I wouldn’t be here,” McMahon said. ”It got to be that bad.”

Fortunately doctors in New York have been able to drain the fluid off of his brain every few months that was causing so much pain. Spinal fluid was leaking through a rotation in one of his vertebrae from a neck injury. The doctors invented a machine to realign his neck and allow the fluid to drain.

McMahon is hoping that by speaking out and being involved in this lawsuit against the NFL that he can prevent this mistreatment of players from continuing.

”The NFL continues to make billions and billions of dollars every year,” McMahon said. ”And some of these guys are homeless. They don’t know who they are, and they were the ones who built this brand to where it’s at.”

Time will tell if justice will be served in this case and if things will shake up in the world of football.

  • Kate Hudson On Exes Doping and Botox

Kate Hudson On Exes Doping and Botox

Kate Hudson dated Lance Armstrong in 2008 and Alex Rodriguez in 2009. The starlet claims that she was surprised when the two athletes both came clean about using performance enhancing drugs.

“I was as shocked as anyone. But, I personally think that you make the choices you make and you should reap the consequences.”

Does she think people over-reacted to the news of the sports icons’ revelations? Not really.

“People have a right to [feel betrayed],” Hudson said. “Lance and Alex are phenomenal athletes who have made some bad choices and let a lot of people down. It’s a decision they made for themselves and they’ve got to loathe it.”

Yeah, you can’t really count on your ex-girlfriend to have your back in most situations. However, Kate Hudson has her mom’s back, as well as her own, when allegations of plastic surgery fly from the constantly present paparazzi.

”I just look at the paparazzi and mentally cut their heads off. The negativity is just so vast. Will everybody stop being so damned judgmental? If someone wants to go get butt implants, then sure, go get butt implants. The real question is, How do they treat the person next to them? Are they a-holes or are they awesome?”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84ZQTTaTr5s

She also spoke out on the issue of women in Hollywood dabbling in Botox, and didn’t confirm or deny whether she would ever do it herself.

“Why not? Right now, it’s not something I feel I need but I think it’s great that it’s available.” she said. “The other day, my girlfriend called me and said, ‘I’m going to get a little Boty.’ So I think there’s nothing wrong with a little Boty call if you feel you want it.”

She makes a really good point. Does putting so much emphasis on whether someone looks the way they look because they were born that way or not deplete the larger issue?

Why do we care whether someone has enhanced (or totally messed up) their features?

  • Liz Cheney Rips Obama With Help From Dick

Liz Cheney and Dick Cheney have taken to the op-ed platform of the Wall Street Journal to make some seriously specific accusations against the president and his policies. Dick Cheney has been a harsh critic of Obama’s since the very beginning of his days in office. Just last month he called Obama a “very weak president”.

At the forefront of the attacks was the latest issue concerning ISIS and their continuing threat to Iraq. The Cheneys said that Obama was abandoning the Iraqi people.

He added that the president is “blithely unaware” of the threat of al Qaeda and the threat to America that could result if ISIS is allowed to continue their bloody rampage across Iraq.

When it comes to foreign policy, in the Cheneys’ eyes, there is none worse than Barack Obama. Here is an excerpt from the long rant:

“Iraq is at risk of falling to a radical Islamic terror group and Mr. Obama is talking climate change. … Terrorists take control of more territory and resources than ever before in history, and he goes golfing. He seems blithely unaware, or indifferent to the fact, that a resurgent al Qaeda presents a clear and present danger to the United States of America. … Instead, he abandoned Iraq and we are watching American defeat snatched from the jaws of victory.”

They also criticized the proposal to bring Iran on board as allies against a common enemy.

“Only a fool would believe American policy in Iraq should be ceded to Iran, the world’s largest state sponsor of terror.” the Cheneys stated.

The Cheneys also recalled an experience when visiting the very area that is under attack:

“On a trip to the Middle East this spring, we heard a constant refrain in capitals from the Persian Gulf to Israel, ‘Can you please explain what your president is doing?’, ‘Why is he walking away?’, ‘Why is he so blithely sacrificing the hard fought gains you secured in Iraq?’, ‘Why is he abandoning your friends?’, ‘Why is he doing deals with your enemies?’”

Foreign policy has never been this administrations strong suit, but do they deserve the thrashing? Some might say they sure do. Others would disagree, like Eric Kleefeld of The Week. He writes, “Notably, the column accuses President Obama of having been spectacularly wrong about Iraq — with no mention of Vice President Cheney’s own vast errors in 2002 and 2003 about Iraq allegedly having weapons of mass destruction, or his predictions that the war would go smoothly.”

Ouch. That had to hurt a little.

What do you think? Harsh words for a man who is just trying his hardest to keep our country safe?

Or is this truth that needs to be heeded?

  • Victoria Azarenka Loses Match, Shows Good Attitude

Victoria Azarenka lost her first match in more than three months in the first round of the Aegon Championships on Tuesday.

She lost 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to Camila Giorgi of Italy after three grueling hours of play.

That’s saying something since Giorgi had already beaten top ten players Dominika Cibulkova and Maria Sharapova this season.

    Quite impressive.

Azarenka won the first set from 4-2 down. Giorgi, a relative newcomer reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon as a qualifier in 2012, nabbed a 5-0 lead in the second, saving five break points at 4-0.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPOLSI8iI_c

In the grisly final set, Giorgi failed to serve out the match at 5-4, but she broke again at 6-5 when Azarenka netted her backhand.

Is Azarenka upset? Not really. She fully met her expectations of herself, and that’s what matters most to her.

“That’s exactly what I wanted,” Azarenka said. ”I wanted to have a competitive match. I wanted to test myself, to play for a long time, see how my body is going to react.”

She added, ”I’m pretty pleased with what happened. Obviously the result is the result, but that’s a beginning. It’s a starting point. There are a lot of positive things that I can take from what happened today.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKBFq3M8sDQ

    That’s a great sportsman’s attitude!

“I had the desire, it was so important to see where I’m at and what I have to work on. I need to work on timing, reaction and decision-making, things that you miss when you are away for a long time.”

The former number one played especially well considering she has recently recovered from a foot injury and hasn’t played since early March. Azarenka even feels like she’s not done yet and is ready to compete in more challenging scenarios.

”I was really happy that I was there for every single moment, for every single ball,” she said. ”I felt that my level of concentration was really high. I just have to get into that rhythm.”

Congrats to Victoria Azarenka on all that she learned from her loss!

  • Elisabetta Canalis Has Miscarriage, Offers Sympathy

Elisabetta Canalis, the Italian actress most famous in America for dating actor George Clooney, revealed to her followers on her whosay page that she had a miscarriage.

The actress was pregnant with her first child with boyfriend Brian Perri. She wanted to share her heartbreak in the hopes that it would help other women out there that have gone through the same thing.

Through the Daily Mail‘s translator, she is reported to have said, “Unfortunately, life gives you … a reality that you do not expect, and that is very hard to accept, even if you think you are strong enough and prepared. You’re never really ready to be told that there is no more beating [heartbeat] and that it had already stopped long ago.”

“I just want to say to all those women who are going through it to stay strong because life goes on and it is nobody’s fault and nature acts in incomprehensible ways. We can only accept it. I just want to say that I feel you close, if you are suffering as I am doing. We can’t deny it, it’s like an incessant sorrow you can’t get rid of.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QV8zAlXmeqY

The sweet sympathetic sentiment was followed by praise for her boyfriend, spine surgeon Brian Perri.

“I know I’m lucky because I have a special man next to me that I wish all [could] have. The future is full of surprises and happiness and there’s a lot of hope, I keep on believing in it.”

The two have been together for less than a year, but perhaps she’s found her special guy after a string of sports stars and film stars. That is, if you can count Jackass‘ Steve-O as a film star. Surely Brian Perri is a few steps up from that.

Hopefully she will recover, as much as one can after a miscarriage, and will find happiness in the future.

  • Harry Potter Star Talks Alcohol Abuse, Childhood

Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, now 24 and a very accomplished thespian, has been open about the fact that he abused alcohol during his run on the incredibly famous Harry Potter movies.

These days, he is careful to highlight the results of four years of sobriety.

Daniel Radcliffe was just an 11-year-old boy when his role as the boy wizard shot him into a world of fame, pressure, and confusion.

To help him cope as he began to try and figure out who he was as a person beyond the spotlight, he turned to alcohol.

“It is not a real pressure, but it is a pressure of living with the thought, ‘Oh, what is all these people are saying I am not going to have a career?’” he said. “What if they are all going to be right and will be laughing and I will be consigned to a bunch of ‘Where are they now?’ lists?’”

Two years ago, he told his story of alcohol abuse and revealed that the problem was much more serious than people thought.

“Seriously, in the last three years of drinking I blacked out nearly every time. Blacking out was my thing. The drinking was unhealthy and damaging to my body and my social life. That’s beyond question. I was living in constant fear of who I’d meet, what I might have said to them, what I might have done with them, so I’d stay in my apartment for days and drink alone.”

He went on to say, “I was a recluse at 20. It was pathetic – it wasn’t me. I’m a fun, polite person and it turned me into a rude bore. For a long time people were saying to me, ‘We think you have a problem,’ but in the end I had to come to the realization myself.”

Yes, so goes the story for many a child actor, but Radcliff soon realized that the alcohol was not doing for him what he had hoped.

“I would have benefited from not drinking as it was not making me as happy as I wanted to.”

Now the actor is so much more than Harry Potter. He is quite a star on TV, movies and on the stage, but he is not bitter about those early years of child stardom.

“People don’t shout ‘Harry Potter’ at me now. They tend to know my name, which is lovely,” he said. “But I will always credit the opportunities I get to Harry Potter. I would not be a happy person if I was bitter about those ten years of my life.”

What a great way to look at that period of his life and not have that popular victim mentality! Congrats to Daniel Radcliffe on his four years being sober.

  • Duck Dynasty Ratings: Do The Robertsons Care?

Duck Dynasty, A&E’s ratings giant for years, has continued to watch it’s ratings drop drastically from the show’s former astronomical success. While the show is still cable’s reality show giant, the viewers have been draining away.

The shrinkage could have something to do with last year’s controversy surrounding patriarch Phil Robertson’s remarks about homosexuality. Phil made such colorful remarks like, “It seems like, to me, a vagina — as a man — would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

This remark and others that followed caused a national outcry from gay and lesbian communities, national media, and people wishing to ride the outcry for no other reason than to make a political statement.

Phil Robertson was unapologetic, however, and contended that his faith comes first. Even before the prosperity of his family. When A&E threatened to suspend Phil Robertson from the show, the family’s colors showed as they stood together and declared A&E could have all or none of the Robertsons.

Yes, the ratings are low, and yes, sales of merchandise are dropping off, but are the Robertsons concerned? I would think not.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52IyDfNC0c4

During last year’s scandal, the family banded together in support of Phil. They said they will be ok if the show gets booted entirely. Even the youngest star, Sadie Robertson said, “If we start to think of ourselves too highly, we remember that we were happy before the show and we will be happy after the show.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lt3DY1Fp3IA

Clearly fame and fortune are not the focus of this family. What do you think? Will the Robertsons survive, should they have to, without A&E? More importantly, can A&E survive without Duck Dynasty?

  • Nuns Sue Strip Club: Ploy To Punish “Sinners”?

Nuns have sued a strip club in a suburban Chicago Neighborhood for disturbances to their lifestyle caused by the club being too close. The nuns claim that the club disturbs their prayers and peace with throbbing music at night.

“Our sisters’ sacred space has been invaded,” Sister Noemia Silva said. “At night now they hear the music when they’re praying. That’s uncalled for.”

The damages are not only of a spiritual nature. They also say that they have been exposed to the normal nastiness that comes with the territory of a strip club. The sisters have seen “public violence, drunkenness and litter, including empty whiskey and beer bottles, discarded contraceptive packages and products and even used condoms,” according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit has been brought by the The Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo, the village of Melrose Park, and three other Melrose Park citizens. They name Club Allure Chicago and the village of Stone Park in their suit, which they filed on Friday under the main issue of zoning laws.

The state of Illinois has a law stating that places of adult entertainment must leave a 1,000 foot buffer between them and places of worship or schools when they build. Allure Chicago happens to be built right along the back fence of the the sisters’ property which includes three chapels, a house for retired sisters, and a home for young women who are contemplating becoming a nun.

“The Sisters have every right to pray and work peacefully without disruption from a strip club in their backyard.”, said Peter Breen, the lawyer for the nuns.

However, the manager of the club claims that they have acted reasonably and that precautions were taken so that the location wouldn’t be a problem. Could this be a ploy to put out of business an establishment that obviously disagrees with what the nuns believe? Maybe, according to Club Allure’s manager Robert Itzkow.

“We spent an awful lot of money to make sure that this kind of thing would not occur. The whole thing is just a question of ‘we don’t like you; you don’t conform to our religious beliefs.’”

He went on to say that the dancers “aren’t monsters. They’re daughters; they’re mothers, and some of them are Catholics too.”

It sounds like the nuns are more worried about the patrons not the dancers, but either way, the nuns say they are the losers in the deal, not the $3 million club that may have to shutter it’s doors.

  • Catherine-Zeta Jones: Now Appreciated By Douglas

Catherine Zeta-Jones has lots of kissing up to look forward to now that she is back full throttle in her marriage to Michael Douglas. Zeta-Jones, 44, and Douglas, 69, temporarily split last year after months of rumored marriage turbulence.

The couple, who have children Dylan, 13, and Carys, 11, from their almost 14-year marriage, have overcome many battles in their lives. Catherine Zeta-Jones admitted recently that she struggles with bipolar disorder. This admission came with lots of media speculation, some bouts with depression, and a very public stint in rehab.

Michael Douglas has battled cancer among other health issues. Together the couple has a lot to overcome, but at least they have each other. Douglas has said that he now appreciates Catherine and that he knows he has taken her for granted.

“When you are younger you care what other people think. And you take the person closest to you for granted. You waste a lot of energy on strangers to make a good impression. When you’re older you focus that energy on the people closest to you, on your family. And you’re courteous.”

The aging actor even admitted that even in his deteriorating physique, he is still…ahem…able to please his wife. I guess avoiding total annihilation of your marriage makes a couple more amorous.

When he was asked if he was in the prime of his life now, he said, “Sexually? I am more comfortable in my own skin now.”

Here’s hoping that couple can find strength in each other to face all that life can, and will, throw at them. Hopefully they can preserve that rare thing known as the long-lasting Hollywood marriage.

  • Alabama Gay Sex Ban Lifted: Justice or Agenda?

An Alabama gay sex ban was overturned in an appeals court, striking down the law that criminalizes consensual same-sex relations.

The law was found to be unconstitutional.

Civil rights groups and gay activists are touting the striking of the law as a step in the right direction, but there is still a long road ahead.

Apparently Alabama was one of 12 states that still have anti-sodomy laws in place.

Attention was brought to this particular law in Alabama when the state attorney general brought a case to the Alabama Court of Appeals in which a prosecutor failed to secure a conviction for 1st degree sodomy on a defendant who was in a consensual relationship. The conviction was decreased to the lesser, non-felony charge of sexual misconduct.

The law was unanimously overturned. Surprisingly, it was the first time the law’s constitutionality had been addressed since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a similar Texas law in 2003.

Texas’ law was ruled to be an unconstitutional invasion of privacy. However, that ruling wasn’t unanimous. In the 6-3 decision the law, which stated that states could punish individuals for participating in what was referred to as “deviant sex”, was overturned after 17 years in effect.

Judge Antonin Scalia, Judge Clarence Thomas, and Judge William H. Rehnquist dissented on the Texas vote, calling it a taking of sides in a culture war.

“The court has largely signed on to the so-called homosexual agenda,” Scalia wrote for the three, as he took the unusual step of reading his dissent statement from the bench.

“The court has taken sides in the culture war,” Scalia said. He then insisted that he has “nothing against homosexuals.”

Even now, in the 11 states that are left where such anti-sodomy laws remain in the books, those laws are rarely enforced.

What do you think? Are these laws an unconstitutional prying into the bedrooms of America or have the courts simply given in to the widespread homosexual agenda?

  • Ann Coulter And Laura Ingraham: The Real Winners?

Ann Coulter and talk show hosts like Laura Ingraham are singing the praises of Dave Brat and his astounding win over Eric Cantor in last week’s congressional race.

Dave Brat’s win is proof positive in Ann Coulter‘s eyes that the Republican party might be ready to quit toying around with amnesty and take a stronger stance against immigration reform, the issue which could be “the end of the Republican Party” to a lot of people.

Coulter also believes that this great victory over Eric Cantor (and in turn, the “established” and comfortable Republicans) is the beginning of a new era in the party, one that will disallow the chamber of commerce to continue “buying their way” into Congress.

Popular talk show host Laura Ingraham called the victory a “massive wakeup call to the Republican party”. Dave Brat won with significantly less money raised for his campaign than Eric Cantor. This would indicate that Republicans everywhere could indeed be ready for a massive shake up within the confines of the overly complacent and docile party.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-YNAITd0gw

However, the support for Dave Brat from the world of talk radio has drawn some criticism and so has talk radio’s role in shaping the future of the party.

The hosts and guests of the talk show Crossfire last week lamented Cantor’s loss as a sad day and bad direction for the Republican party.

Host Stephanie Cutter decried that Cantor “allowed himself to be defined” by talk radio hosts like Ingraham and other Tea Party supporters. She went on to claim that such hosts “drove the election” by continuing to insist that Cantor was in bed with the Obama administration as an “establishment” Republican. She then went on to claim that talk radio is “is basically driving a wedge” between two factions of the Republican party.

Democratic strategist Kiki McLean wondered if the election was about Cantor and Brat or Ingraham and Coulter. She said, “Did the people of Virginia nominate Laura Ingraham?”.

Did they? Or did they nominate someone who just might have the guts to make the flip that the party truly needs? Time will tell.

  • Mono Mono Twins Finally Join Family At Home

Mono mono twins, Jenna and Jillian Thistlethwaite, came home on Saturday just in time to celebrate Father’s Day next weekend with their dad. The twins, whose photo went viral in May after they were snapped holding hands shortly after delivery on May 9th, are enjoying just not being hooked up to anything for a while.

Their mom, Sarah Thistlethwaite, is still having a hard time telling the girls apart.

“We can’t find any difference right now,” said Thistlethwaite. She said the couple even tried to test themselves, but failed. “We thought for sure it was Jenna but it wasn’t, it was Jillian. … I think we’re going to have to paint some toenails to keep them straight.”

Perhaps pink on one and purple on the other?

Even though the girls were born seven weeks early, weighing in at four pounds, two ounces and three pounds, 13 ounces, doctors don’t anticipate any further complications.

Sarah Thistlewaite is just counting her little blessings.

“We were so excited and kept thanking God we made it to that point,” she said. “Having them here is amazing, but having them here so healthy when they were premature, it’s absolutely phenomenal.”

The family spent some time together after coming home with the girls on Saturday.

“We all came into the living room and everyone kind of relaxed and Jackson played with the toys and then looked at the girls,” a relieved Thistlethwaite said. “It was awesome to be in our own family group … with nothing hooked up to the girls.”

The girls were monoamniotic or “mono mono” twins, meaning they shared an amniotic sac as well as an umbilical cord. This happens once every 10,000 pregnancies, making it very rare and extremely susceptible to complications. However, Sarah Thistlewaite spent two months at the hospital on bed rest and managed to avoid the more serious possible complications.

    Congrats to the new family!

  • Monica Seles To Marry Thomas Golisano

Monica Seles, famous tennis player and former stab victim, is engaged to marry Thomas Golisano, potential future Buffalo Bills owner and billionaire. The kicker is that he is 72. She is 40.

Surely images are beginning to conjure of Anna Nicole and other such young ladies who married much, much older men (for their money). Is Monica Seles in it for the money?

The couple have been dating since 2009, so there must be something there other than just money. Besides, she’s not doing too bad for herself.

Golisano announced his impending nuptials and happiness, at an appearance at Bishop Kearney High School in Irondequoit, NY on Thursday. Golisano and Seles both live happily in Florida, where he moved in 2009 after proclaiming to escape New York’s high taxes.

Seles recently hinted at some life changes when she put her Sarasota mansion on the market and said she wanted to “downsize”. She was stabbed in 1993 by a crazy fan of her opponent, Steffi Graff. She then spent two years away, but managed to earn eight Grand Slam titles before her 20th birthday and then retired in 2008.

Golisano is the founder of Paychex, Inc. and was the company’s head until 2004 when he retired. He now focuses on philanthropy through his foundation The Golisano Foundation.

Golisano has a political past, as well. He had three failed governorship runs on the Independence Party line in 1994, 1998 and 2002. He never got more than 14% of the vote and never realized that dream.

However, his dream to own the Buffalo Bills and marry a younger woman just might work out for him. He announced his intentions to put in a bid for the Buffalo Bills at the same appearance that he announced his engagement to Monica Seles. How romantic!

He stated that he wants to keep the Bills in Western New York.

    Congratulations to the happy couple!

  • Tony Awards Dominated By The Ladies

Tony Awards Dominated By The Ladies

The Tony Awards on Sunday were ruled by the ladies. A classic performer was honored and several newcomers were highlighted as well.

Audra McDonald, 43, was honored with her historical sixth Tony for playing Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. She won her last Tony for her performance in Broadway show, Porgy and Bess, in 2012 and was showered with applause and a standing ovation.

Through tears of gratitude, McDonald thanked her parents, all the women who came before her, and the woman Billie Holiday herself.

“I want to thank all the shoulders of the strong and brave and courageous women that I am standing on,” she said. “And most of all Billie Holiday. You deserve so much more than you were given when you were on this earth.”

She told reporters backstage, “I am just completely overwhelmed and grateful and I don’t believe it.”

Jessie Mueller, who made her Broadway debut in 2012, won over audiences with her remarkable performance as Carole King in the musical Beautiful and was awarded her first Tony for her efforts.

Carole King said of the woman who so elegantly portrayed her, “At that age, I had no idea who I was and what was good about me and not good about me. It is a gift to see myself as the woman I was then and to actually like myself.”

Jessie Mueller beat a hopeful Kelli O’Hara. She was hoping that after five nominations she would finally get that Tony. O’Hara, 38, was nominated as best actress in a musical for her role in the stage version of The Bridges of Madison County.

She had support from composer Jason Robert Brown, who said of the amazing songstress, “Every composer in this room should be blessed to have Kelli perform their music.”

    Maybe next time, Kelli…

Lena Hall, 34, also won her first Tony on Sunday for her supporting role as a man in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

What a night for the ladies of Broadway!

  • Mono Mono Twins Home For Father’s Day

Mono Mono Twins Home For Father’s Day

The rare mono mono twins born May 9th went home over the weekend. The photograph of the twins holding hands shortly after birth went viral and prompted a nation to ask, “What’s mono mono?”

Jenna Thistlethwaite was born at four pounds, two ounces, with sister Jillian following less than a minute later at three pounds, 13 ounces. The girls shared an amniotic sac and a placenta creating a rare condition called monoamnioitic, or “mono mono.”

The mono mono twins were at Akron General Medical Center in Ohio for a month recovering and gaining weight. Now, with each of the girls hovering around six pounds, they are home with their parents and their big brother Jaxon.

“It’s just nice to have everyone under the same roof,” brave mother Sarah Thistlethwaite said. “It was really stressful — you want to pay attention to the little one at home and you just gave birth to two little babies. It was a pull and a tear as to where to go.”

Now that they’re relaxing at home, Sarah says that she has already noticed the twins doing some fun twin stuff and exhibiting their rare bond. “When I try to feed them on the feeding pillow, they gradually migrate toward each other,” she said. “And when I lay them on the floor, they scoot toward each other. It’s pretty cool to see them doing.”

The family is grateful that everything turned out well for them in such a precarious situation. “We were so excited and kept thanking God we made it to that point,” she said. “Having them here is amazing, but having them here so healthy when they were premature, it’s absolutely phenomenal.”

The family was welcomed home on Saturday with grandparents and friends in attendance to see the new babies come home. As for Sunday, the Thistlethwaite’s spent a quiet day relaxing together and getting to know each other better.

  • Cedar Point Closed For Weekend, Reopens Monday

Cedar Point, America’s largest seasonal amusement park was closed over the weekend due to a water main break in Sandusky, Ohio. Also out of comission were three hotels on the park’s property.

The closure put quite the damper on many a family’s weekend and caused a National Lampoon-like situation for some like the Balderas’ of South Bend, Indiana. They and many others drove for hours, arrived early, found the perfect spot, then discovered that the park was closed.

“This was our vacation,” Roger Balderas said. His wife Debbie waited in line for an hour to get a refund for the tickets they bought for the two of them, their daughter, and their daughter’s friend. They were still stuck with the cost of their hotel nearby Port Clinton, and were stuck in backed up traffic for and hour and a half as disappointed patrons filed out of the parking lot.

While the disappointment was a lot to deal with, Cedar Park did make good on any tickets that weren’t refunded. In a statement, they announced that any unused tickets would be good for the rest of the year.

“We recognize that this situation has caused many of our guests to be disappointed,” the statement said. “We are sorry that this has happened.”

This was a huge blow for patrons who were looking forward to spending an idyllic weekend at the roller coaster haven, but could also be a blow to Cedar Fair Industries. Or maybe not.

They are the owners of over a dozen water parks and amusement parks all over the country, as well as some hotels. Their revenues reached $1.14 billion last year. And like most huge companies, they probably have insurance, so don’t worry about them too much.

  • Maya Angelou Remembered With Beautiful Words

Maya Angelou touched the lives of many who spoke at her memorial service on Saturday at Wake Forest University. The university is where she taught for 32 years as Dr. Angelou, though she never graduated from college.

During her lifetime she lived larger than most even dream of. She changed the way the world as a whole was looked at by some of the biggest names is showbusiness, politics, and those of her friends that spoke anonymously on Saturday of her resonant voice and life force.

First Lady Michelle Obama said of her first encounters with Maya Angelou’s work, “Her voice lifted me right out of my own little head. She told us that our worth has nothing to do with what the world might say. Instead, she said, each of us comes from the Creator trailing wisps of glory. She reminded us that we must each find our own voice, decide our own value, and then announce it to the world with all the pride and joy that is our birthright as members of the human race.”

Obama was among many famous faces that came to speak of the impact that Maya Angelou had on their lives. Another was Bill Clinton, who enjoyed the privilege of having her read her poem On the Pulse of Morning at his 1993 inauguration. He recalled how she found her voice again after refusing to speak for five years when her mother’s boyfriend raped her as a child.

“She was without a voice for five years and then she developed the greatest voice on the planet. God loaned her His voice,” Clinton said. “She had the voice of God. And he decided he wanted it back.”

And of course long time friend and supporter Oprah Winfrey was on hand to say goodbye to the most influential woman in her life. She said, “Maya Angelou is the greatest woman I have ever known.” Then almost sobbing, she added, “She was my anchor. So it’s hard to describe to you what it means when your anchor shifts.”

Some beautiful words for a beautiful woman and an incredibly influential icon of our times.

  • Paris Hilton’s Phone Hacker In Trouble Again

Paris Hilton’s phone hacker is in the news again and it seems this guy just can’t be around a computer without getting deep into trouble.

Cameron Lacroix, 25, aka “cam0” or “Freak” or “leetjones”, hacked into Hilton’s phone in 2005 and leaked pictures of the heiress that he obtained. He then spent 11 months in a juvenile detention center for his crime.

Lacroix actually has a huge rap sheet to answer for, like 18 counts of computer hacking related crimes in 2008. He is also guilty of making bomb threats at two different high schools and breaking into a telephone company’s electronic records to set up phone accounts for his friends.

This time, Paris Hilton‘s nemesis (well, one of them anyway) is on the hook for breaking into his community college’s records and changing his grades and those of a few classmates. He also accessed law enforcement records, which contained “highly sensitive law enforcement data” such as “police reports, intelligence reports, arrest warrants, and sex offender information.”

He then iced the cake with access to bank account records for thousands of people. All of these exploits began just three months after he was released from prison for Paris Hilton’s phone incident. He was ordered to surrender a Toshiba notebook computer and a thumb drive seized by police investigators.

On a side note, is anyone else wondering why a kid with this much obvious skill is in community college?

A US distric attorney stated in a press release that Lacroix has agreed to plead guilty to all charges and will serve four years in prison. Those will be followed by three years of “supervised release.”

Then he will work for the NSA. Just putting that out there. It seems a good match, but only time will tell if this kid can pull together and make a career as a “white hat”.

  • Kiki Bertens Loses To Comeback Star Andrea Petkovic

Kiki Bertens was defeated on Monday at the French Open by Andrea Petkovic 1-6, 6-2, 7-5. Bertens had a good long run, but was not able to withstand Petkovic’s flying comeback.

Petkovic’s career was at a stand still only about 18 months ago and the fallen tennis star, plagued by injuries, was looking into a change in career. Petkovic was studying political science, philosophy, and literature.

“I asked for some internships at newspapers,” said Petkovic. “I was also writing for kind of a big newspaper in Germany for a while, and I asked a few politicians that I know if I could do an internship with them.”

Luckily for the world of the red clay, she bounced back big time from being ranked 143rd to residing now at the number nine spot and has swung her way into a Grand Slam quarterfinal again.

Although, even though her career as a tennis player is back with a vengeance, she knows she can’t play tennis forever, and always has her eyes open for her next move. She loves learning and loves reading philosophy.

“Philosophy-wise, Nietzsche is the one that impressed me most. I don’t necessarily agree with everything he says and it’s very dark and sad, but he was a good writer,” she said. “I actually really liked the existentialists in French. I read a lot of (Jean-Paul) Sartre and (Albert) Camus.”

But could her love for learning translate into a career as a teacher? Probably not.

“I would love to be able to do that, but I have no patience whatsoever,” she said.

As far as Kiki Bertens is concerned, it’s back to the racket and court for her. The 22-year-old still has a long and promising career to get ready for. What did you think of Monday’s matches?

  • Chris Christie Looking Slimmer, Ready To Campaign?

Chris Christie is looking slimmer and a little more fit these days! Could this be to squash those who criticize the heavyweight politician for being to unhealthy to run for president?

Experts estimate that Christie has lost about 85 pounds. After admitting in May of last year that he had undergone lap band surgery, Christie’s cardiologist said that the governor is helping by keeping “a healthy diet and regular cardiovascular exercise regimen.”

Since the now-infamous “Elephant in the Room” Time cover, and even before, Christie has garnered criticism for his overweight appearance and his resulting bad health.

Michael Kinsley writes on Bloomberg View on September 29th, 2011, “Look, I’m sorry, but New Jersey Governor Chris Christie cannot be president: He is just too fat.”

However, Christie had supporters out there like Jonathan Chait of New York magazine who argued that Christie’s weight is completely irrelevant to his presidential campaign ambitions. He said that “American elites view obesity with disgust, and they’re repulsed at the notion that a very fat guy could rise to a position of symbolic leadership.”

Christie is now reportedly shedding that weight for a much more important reason. His family.

“This is a hell of a lot more important to me than running for president,” Christie says when the news of his surgery goes public. “This is about my family’s future.”

Back in October of 2013, a report from Christie’s doctor stated that, “Governor Christie has normal blood work … He has no medical limitations and is fit to serve as the Governor of the state of New Jersey.”

Or to serve as president. Obviously it wouldn’t hurt the confidence of the American people that his chances of dying in office should he become president would be….slimmer.

But should his weight be this big of an issue to people? Who is more correct in their assesment of the Chris Christie weight issue, Michael Kinsley or Jonathan Chait?
