  • The Internet Was Kind Of Terrible In 2002 [Infographic]

Looking back 10 years ago is kind of hard. It’s difficult to remember much of anything from when I was a snot-nosed brat. I was, however, already messing around with the Internet at that point, but it was mostly for school or playing Shockwave games. It’s actually kind of astounding to see just how far we’ve come.

A new infographic from Best Education Sites seeks to put things into perspective for all of us who still complain about the Internet. It used to be much worse. Looking objectively back on 2002, the Internet was going through its awkward teen years as it tried to prove itself to the world.

Speaking of the world, there were only 569 million people worldwide connected to the Internet in 2002. That number has increased to 2.27 billion in 2012. Likewise, Internet usage was only at 46 minutes a day 10 years ago. It has increased to four hours a day now. The number of Web sites has also increased with 3 million in 2002 and 555 million in 2012. The rapid growth of the Internet is what led to the world switching to IPv6 on June 6.

It was to be expected, but it really is surprising to see that Internet Explorer was the dominant browser of choice only 10 years ago. In 2002, 95 percent of Internet users were on Microsoft’s Web browser. Only 39 percent are using Internet Explorer today as Firefox and Chrome eat away at its market share.

The most interesting difference between the two years are the most popular search terms. In 2002, people were searching for topics like Spiderman, Star Wars, Avril Lavigne and American Idol. In 2012, we’re busy searching for things like Rebecca Black, Google+ and iPhone 5. We can at least rest easy knowing that our infatuation with pop culture has not subsided over the last decade.

The biggest change, however, came in the form of social networking. Friendster, one of the first social networks, launched in 2002 with three million users. Now we’re in 2012 where Facebook’s recent second quarter filings revealed the site to have 955 million users.

As the infographic points out, the Internet’s constant march of progress has led to its fair share of deaths. Numerous companies refused to jump on emerging trends and paid dearly for it later on. They point to companies like Blockbuster, Borders and Tower Records that refused to harness the Internet when they had a chance. Needless to say, all three companies are now bankrupt.

It’s insane to think of how quickly the Internet evolved over a short span of 10 years. One must wonder how the Internet will change over the course of the next decade. We’re beginning to see the Internet being used as a tool for war and peace. It’s slowly taking the place of traditional media as well. The Internet may one day encompass everything that we consume on this earth as its delivered to us personally through our dedicated connections.

The Internet Kind Of Sucked In 2002

  • ComScore May 2012 Report on Mobile Market Share

ComScore just released the results of their May 2012 research from their MobiLens service, which reports on trends in the mobile phone industry. In this case case, they were looking at three month period from February 2012 to May 2012.

The study takes into account responses from over 30,000 U.S. mobile phone subscribers. It also listed what the trends were at the beginning February versus the end of May.

Here are the results for smartphone and non-smartphone OEM mobile phones:

No surprise, Samsung came out on top with over 56% share of the OEM market, and relatively no change over the three months. LG also held their share of the market and came in at over 19%.

Apple increased mobile phone market share and went from 13.5% in February to 15% in May. Motorola lost a little going from 12.8% down to 12%. HTC changed very little, slipping from 6.3% down to 6.1%.

Here are the results for top smartphone platform market share:

Google came out on top, rising from 50.1% in February to just under 60% in May. Apple, of course, was next in line holding a 30.2% share in February and rising to 31.9% by May. RIM, somehow actually still in the game at 13.4% in February, but falling to just 11.4% by May.

Microsoft held about 4% share in February and gained very little. Symbian, which held 1.5% in February slipped to just 1.1% by the time May rolled around. So, as you might have expected, Google and Apple control about 90% of the smartphone market.

The results for mobile content usage:

The way people are using their phones remained relatively unchanged from February to May. The only significant change came from people who listened to music using their device which rose from just under 25% in February to 27% in May.

Around 75% use their phones to send text messages. Around 50% of users take advantage of their phone to download apps. Also about 50% used their phone to browse the web. Around 33% used them for gaming, and about 36% used them to access social networks.

So there you have it. While things remain relatively unchanged over the three months from February to May, almost everybody (90%) who has a smartphone is using either an Android or an Apple operating system.

  • WWDC 2012: Apple Uploads Keynote To YouTube

On Monday various Apple executives took the stage for the keynote at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, which ends today. During the keynote they introduced a huge number of new products. Items on the menu included updates to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines, an all new MacBook Pro with retina display, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, and iOS 6.

Unfortunately, Apple did not see fit to stream the keynote live. While there were a number of live blogs (including ours) and a Ustream feed available, neither is quite the same as watching the keynote yourself. Shortly after the keynote ended, Apple posted their own video on their website, but if you weren’t watching via Safari on your Mac or iOS device, or QuickTime on your Windows PC, then you couldn’t see it then, either.

Now, four days later, Apple has finally posted the video to their YouTube channel. So, if you missed it on Monday, you can check it out below. All two hours of it. Though if you don’t feel like watching the whole thing, Siri’s stand-up routine at the very beginning is worth the price of admission all by itself.

Of course, there’s a certain amount of irony in Apple posting a video to YouTube – which is owned by Google – in which they announce that they’ll be ditching Google Maps from iOS.

  • WWDC 2012: Mac Pro Gets A Piece Of The Update Action

Last week we brought you news that Apple might announce an update to the Mac Pro during this year’s WWDC 2012 keynote. Then, shortly before the keynote began earlier this afternoon, we brought you news that the specs for several updated Mac computers – including the Mac Pro – had surfaced.

Initially, though, it appeared that all these rumors might have been false. Apple’s keynote came and went without a whisper of the new Mac Pro. Mac Pro fans need not despair, however, that Apple’s workhorse got left out in the cold. When the Apple Store went back up following the keynote, there was a shiny new Mac Pro right there along with the rest of Apple’s new products.

    New Mac Pro Models

The specs for the new Mac Pro match the information that was released this morning. There are three models. The quad-core model costs $2,499 and sports a single 3.2GHz quad-core Intel Xeon processor with 6GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. The 12-core model costs $3,799 and has two 2.4GHz 6-core processors with 12GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. The Server model costs $2,999 and comes with a single 3.2GHz quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM, and two 1TB hard drives.

The Mac Pro was long overdue for an update. Apple has left the model virtually untouched for two years, prompting a significant outcry from its fans. Though it’s hardly Apple’s best-selling Mac model, it’s extremely popular among a wide array of professionals, including software developers who create iOS and OS X apps.

  • WWDC 2012: Keynote Video Now Available Online

WWDC 2012: Keynote Video Now Available Online

It’s been an awfully big day for Apple fans. Earlier this afternoon during their WWDC 2012 keynote, Apple unveiled a slew of amazing new products, including updates to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, an all-new retina display MacBook Pro, iOS 6, and OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

For those of you who were able, there were several ways to take in this year’s keynote. You could follow one of several live blogs, or you could follow the not-exactly-HD Ustream broadcast. What you could not do, however, is watch a live stream of the event from Apple. Nevertheless, Apple did record the event. If you missed it, you can now watch it on Apple’s website. Shortly after the keynote ended they posted the full-length video, which you can see here.

Not so fast, though. If you’re not using Safari on your Mac or Quicktime on Windows, you’re gonna have a bad time. According to Apple, streaming only works if you’re using Safari 4 or 5 on your Mac, mobile Safari on iOS 3 and up, or Quicktime 7 on Windows:

So, if our WWDC 2012 keynote coverage doesn’t manage to scratch the itch, now you can check out the video for yourself. Assuming you’re using an Apple-approved browser, of course.

  • Eyes Free Announced Integrating Siri with your Car [WWDC 2012 Coverage]

Yet another development from Apple revealed at today’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC 2012) in San Francisco. It’s Siri integration for your car. Say hello to hands free. And it’s not just in English either. Siri has learned Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, and Cantonese.

That’s right, Apple has been working with a number of automobile makers to bring to life a true one touch feature that will take your eyes off your device and put them where they belong, on the road. Apparently in the next 12 months, eyes free Siri integration will be available on various models from BMW, GM, Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Chrysler, and Honda. Talk about a safety feature, this is true hands free integration.

The new technology will be available for iOS so you can integrate your iPhone or iPad right into the steering wheel of your car. One touch and Siri is taking your commands with no need to be distracted from the road. Stay tuned to WebProNews for more developments out of WWDC 2012.

  • Aliens: Colonial Marines Delayed To February 2013

It was so sad to see BioShock Infinite delayed to February of next year. I was scared that Irrational’s high-flying game would be all alone in the winter month with nobody to comfort it. It’s good news then that the cold, acidic embrace of a Xenomorph is now there to keep it company.

That’s right folks, Sega and Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines has been delayed until February 2013. The delay impacts all versions of the game, but the new release window only applies to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions of the game. The planned Wii U version will launch at some point after that apparently.

Colonial Marines was announced years ago, but only started to show up in the news lately as Gearbox started to show off the game in earnest last year. At that point, the game was given a fall 2012 release date, but that obviously isn’t going to happen. Gearbox could have potentially pushed back the date since they have another hotly anticipated game, Borderlands 2, coming out this fall as well.

“I am thrilled to announce the definitive launch date for Aliens: Colonial Marines,” said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. “Aliens: Colonial Marines is the culmination of a life-time of inspiration from the films and relentless passion and drive from the exceptionally talented development team behind the scenes.”

For those who have not been following the game, Aliens: Colonial Marines intends to be the true sequel to James Cameron’s masterpiece Aliens. The story picks up right after the events of that film with a group of marines discovering an abandoned ship orbiting around LV-426, the planet from the first two films.

The game seems to be aiming for the action that was present in Aliens with the anxiety and the fear that the original Alien instilled. As a huge Alien fan, I am predisposed to love the game, but here’s hoping that the extra development time makes it good enough so that everybody can enjoy it.

To celebrate the new release date, Gearbox has released a new trailer for the game. It’s 100 percent gameplay and it looks amazing.
