Google’s new tablet will likely not be released until some time in July, instead of earlier reports of May, as the company seeks to modify and lower the price point of the device, according to a source close to the project.

Google is rumored to be making some design changes, and hopes to bring the price more in line with that of Amazon’s Kindle Fire at $199, down from the current rumored price of $249. The tablet, made in conjunction with Taiwan’s Asustek Computer, presently sports a 7-inch screen, a Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor and is wifi-only, running Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

There have also been reports of Apple’s 7.85 inch iPad mini, which is seemingly a device Google would like to beat to the market. It has also been assumed that Google might be delaying the launch of its tablet in order to upgrade its OS to the upcoming Android Jelly Bean.

It has been speculated that Google might call its new tablet the “Google Play,” as the company recently purchased 18 domain names surrounding the word play. Though it would appear that relevant competition with Apple’s iPad isn’t going to happen, time will tell if Google can mount an effective campaign against the Amazon Kindle Fire, and also against upcoming tablets that will run Windows 8.
